much, many와 a lot of는 모두 ‘많다’의 의미이지만
much와 many는 부정문이나 의문문에서,
a lot of는 긍정문에서 사용됩니다.
간혹 학술 논문 등에서는 much와 many가 긍정문에 쓰이는 경우도 있지만,
아무튼 일상 생활에서 쓰이는 회화나 문자에서는
위의 원칙이 지켜진다는 사실을 꼭 기억해 두길 바랍니다.
much와 many는 부정문이나 의문문에서 사용된다.

A. Do you have much free time these days? (question)
(요즈음엔 여유 시간이 많습니까? ___의문문이니까 much)
B. Yes, I have a lot of free time. (positive statement)
(예, 여유 시간이 많습니다. ____긍정문이니까 a lot of)
C. No, I do not have much free time. (negative statement)
(아니오, 여유 시간이 없습니다. ___부정문이니까 much)
D. Does she have many responsibilities at work? (question)
(그녀는 직장에서 많은 책임을 지고 있습니까?)
E.Yes, she has a lot of responsibilities. (positive statement)
(예, 많은 책임이 있습니다.)
F. No, she doesn’t have many responsibilities. (negative statement)
(아니오, 많은 책임을 지고 있지 않습니다.)
부정문이나 의문문에서 셀 수 없는 명사에는 much를,
셀 수 있는 명사에는 many를 사용합니다.

긍정문에서는 much나 many 대신에 a lot of를 사용한다.

B: I have a lot of stress at work. (Not: I have much stress at work.)

D: He drank a lot of beer last night. (Not” He drank much beer.)

E: Her father has a lot of money. (Not: Her father has much money.)

긍정문에서 사용되는 ‘a lot of’는 가산 명사나 불가산 명사 모두에 사용될 수 있습니다. 아시죠?
