『The Sound of Silence(침묵의 소리)』는 1965년

미국의 남성 듀오「Simon & Garfunkel」의 데뷔 앨범

수록곡으로, 1965년 빌 보드 싱글 차트 정상에 올랐습니다.

특히, 1968년 개봉된 영화 'The Graduate(졸업)'의

주제 곡 중 하나 이면서 대표적인 O.S.T로 자리 잡은

곡입니다. 이 영화는 1960년대 아메리칸 'New Wave

Cinema' 의 기수 (旗手) 역할을 하였으며, 당대 극장

흥행과 O.S.T에서 엄청난 성공을 거두었고,

그 해 국내 극장가를 강타(强打)했습니다.

제 40회 아카데미 시상식에서 감독상, 남우(男優)

주연상, 여우(女優) 주연상/조연상, 촬영 상,

각색(脚色) 상, 작품 상에 '노미네이트' 되었습니다.

젊은 시절의 'Dustin Hoffman'을 볼 수 있는

영화이며, 사운드 트랙으로 삽입된 이 곡이 상당한

인기를 얻기도 했습니다.

찌르는 듯이 눈이 부실 때

그 불빛은 밤을 찢어 쪼개고

내가 본 벌거숭이 불빛 속에서

소리 없음이 암(癌)이 자라는 것과 같다는 걸

하지만 나의 얘기는 소리 없이 내리는

빗방울처럼 소리 없는 샘 안에서 메아리 쳤어

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

사람들은 절하고 기도하지

스스로가 만든 네온 신에게

그 몸짓은 경고를 반짝이며 토해내고 -

그 몸짓이 만들고 있는 말 속에서

그 몸짓은 이렇게 말했지

"예언자의 말씀은 지하철 벽에 적혀 있다

그리고 싸구려 '둥둥집'에도"

그리고 속삭였지 침묵의 소리로
