Pitch #1: Fastball, high 80’s to mid 90’s velocity. A four-seam fastball that is fairly straight but really explodes towards the plate. Works it in all directions. Throws it a lot and works off of it. Will use it as a strikeout pitch up in the zone on occasion. Would like to see him pound guys inside with it more.
Pitch #2: Slider, low 80’s velocity. Has good sweep to it and changes plains well. Works it inside to righties with great effectiveness. Has late movement and bites hard. Still improving his command over the break on it, but has solid control over it and keeps it down and in with consistency.
Pitch #3: Curveball, high 60’s to mid 70’s velocity. Has 11-5 movement, that he struggles to keep down in the zone. Can be a really great pitch when he keeps it down in the zone, and even dropping out of the zone. Can be a swing and miss pitch when he keeps it down. Gets better as he goes deeper into starts.
Pitch #4: Changeup, high 70’s to low 80’s velocity. Has good late downward movement, bites fairly hard. Has good command over it and can be a swing and miss pitch. Mixes it in well, and does a relatively good job of keeping it down in the zone.
Delivery: Real funky delivery creates a lot of deception. Steps towards third base before he brings his hands and legs together around belt level. Drops his upper body to met his leg that he uses a belt high leg lift with. Rotates hips hard and uses a three quarters arm slot. Difficult to repeat, doesn’t use max effort though, and doesn’t put a tonne of strain on his arm, but some on his shoulder. Struggles with flying open and leaving the ball up in the zone. Stands on the first base side of the rubber. From the stretch, uses a slide step and really quickens his delivery making him difficult to run on.
Control: Real aggressive pitcher, attacks hitters and is in the zone. Struggles to keep the ball down at times, as he fly’s open a lot with his delivery. Works in all directions, but would like to see him be more aggressive on the inner half, backing guys off the plate. Has a great four pitch mix, can throw all for called strikes or swings and misses. Pitches well to both lefties and righties. Doesn’t walk many.
Poise: Shows great poise and calmness on the mound. Very quiet and doesn’t show frustration. Works relatively quickly. Has a lot of confidence in himself and isn’t intimidated by the big leagues. Struggles at times with quick runners on as he can become a bit too distracted by them.
Physical Description: Big imposing frame, capable of eating a lot of innings. Has monster shoulders and back. Great weight distribution, lacks some muscle definition on the front half of his body. Long arms and legs, with strength and muscle. Frame is conducive to adding bad weight in the future around his midsection. Not current need to add or subtract weight.
Projection: Big frame capable of eating innings and becoming a strong middle of the rotation starter. Throws strikes and acts hitters, has transitioned to the big leagues well. Could contend for All-Star selections in the future. Fits best in the middle of a rotation on a contending team.
Stance: Starts with a very upright stance, but hunches over the plate as the ball is released. Keeps his front foot on its toe. Hands are held at head level and lowered to his shoulders before swings. Hands and arms are held close to his body. Uses a small stride into a closed stance with his front foot slightly in front of his back foot.
Approach: Very aggressive, especially considering he is a leadoff hitter. Does a great job of getting on-base by drawing walks and working counts, but isn’t afraid to swing early if he gets a pitch to his liking. Capable of hitting off-speed fairly well and does a great job of letting the ball get deep and staying back on it.
Hitting Ability: A slight upper cut to his swing with a two handed follow through. Goes with the pitch and can hit any pitch in any location. Hits for a high average, typically around the .290-.300 mark.Strikes out too often for a leadoff hitter, but also draws a high number of walks. Hits extremely well against right-handed pitching, but really struggles against lefties.
Power: A solid power, and will typically finish slightly above 20 homeruns annually. Has power to all fields and his power plays in all ball parks. Frequently hits the ball out of the park to the opposite field.
Running: Average runner, who is a strong threat on the bases. Will consistently reach the 20 stolen bases mark. Struggles slightly with success rates but has maintains his aggression despite this. His strength on the bases is his ability to read pitchers well and get good jumps, allowing his speed to play up.
Fielding: Versatile defender who has played decently in center field this season, but fits best in right field. Has great athleticism that allows him to cover ground and make catches on the run. Has below average range in center field with slightly above average range in right field. Has above average arm strength and well above average accuracy. Doesn’t have a very quick transition from glove to hand. Would grade out as slightly above average defensively if he was playing in right field.
Physical Description: Slightly under sized frame, that has solid weight distribution and strong lower half. Lacks muscle definition, and carries a bit of bad weight around his mid-section. Potential to continue to add and weight around his core will be present for the foreseeable future. Real muscular back.
Projection: An all-star level outfielder, who is a five-tool player. Capable of being a consistent 20 homerun, 20 stolen base guy that hits for a high average and has versatility in the outfield. Can hit anywhere in the batting order.
Pitch #1: Fastball, low to high 90’s velocity. Fairly straight pitch that he can add arm-side run to. Has fantastic control over it and works the corners well. Not afraid to elevate it and blow it by hitters, as it has some late explosion to it. Would like to see him throw it under hitters hands more often. Adds and subtracts velocity off of it extremely well.
Pitch #2: Slider, low to mid 80’s velocity. Has sweeping downward movement, changes plains and moves fairly late. Has good bite to it with tight rotation. Has good control over it and keeps it down in the zone. Throws it for called strikes or swing and misses. Likes to use it as a strikeout pitch, down and out of the zone. Has a lot of confidence in it and will throw it in any count and situation.
Pitch #3: Cutter, high 80’s to low 90’s velocity. Has a bit of cut to it, can keep it on the same plain or change plains with it. Struggles with control of it and leaves it out over the plate too often, giving up homeruns off of it when he does. Has explosive life to it as it reaches the plate. Would like to see him cut it under the hands to both lefties and righties.
Pitch #4: Curveball, mid to high 60’s velocity. Has 11-5 movement, with some good downward bite to it. Does not throw it very often, only a handful of times a game. Likes to start off at-bats with it to mess with hitters timing. Struggles to throw it for consistent called strikes, as it has so much movement it often falls out of the strike zone.
Delivery: Throws from the stretch, with a slow letter high leg lift. Explodes his hips hard and throws from a three quarters arm slot. Very easy to repeat delivery that doesn’t require maximum effort and doesn’t put strain on his arm. Delivery offers strong deception. Stands near the middle of the rubber, slightly off to the third base side. Doesn’t change his delivery at all with runners on.
Control: Likes to work east to west, and keeps his pitches down in the zone well. Has solid command and control. Strikes out a tonne of batters and doesn’t walk many. Rarely gives in to hitters. Gives up too many homeruns. Slightly stronger against righties, but still dominant against both. Strong both home and away. Changes speeds extremely well, and can add and subtract movement off his pitches.
Poise: Very calm, cool and collected on the mound. Maintains his focus well, isn’t intimidated and stays very quiet. Works quickly and throws strikes. Aggressive on the mound with confidence in himself and his abilities to shut down opponents. Shows visible frustration at times, but it is directed at himself.
Physical Description: Long lean pitchers frame, with long legs. Could stand to add weight throughout his frame, has broad shoulders and strong legs. Good weight distribution with decent muscle definition. No concern over adding bad weight in the future.
Projection: Front of the rotation starter, who is a perennial All-Star and Cy Young candidate. Able to eat innings, rack of strikeouts and throw strikes. Has shown the ability to adjust to hitters and a new league.
