Topic 1) What is success? Success is a word, which probably has as many definitions as there are
people to define it. It means something different to every one of us, often
changing with age, context and circumstances. Attempts have been made to define success from the earliest of times: in
ancient Greece Aeschylus said, “When a man is willing and eager, the gods join
in.” In Ecclesiastes in the Bible it says, “Take time to work-it is the price
of success.” William Menninger said that “The six essential qualities that are the
key to success (are): sincerity, personal integrity, humility, courtesy, wisdom
and charity.” whereas novelist Pearl S. Buck thought that: The secret joy in
work is contained in one word-excellence. To know how to do something well is
to enjoy it.” However, often it can seem as though success is due to large doses of
luck-being in the right place at the right time or simply having the right
numbers on your lottery ticket! If you do a search on the internet for “success definition” you will
find that it means “the achievement of something desired, planned or attempted”-am
accurate definition for some, no doubt, but one that leaves us none the wiser
as to how to achieve it.-apparently we would all like to achieve success in
some areas of our lives Look in any reputable bookshop and you will find a wide range of books
on how to be successful at work, at home, in yourself and in life general. The “secrets of success” range from the obvious (such as setting
yourself challenging but achievable goals, writing them down, knowing yourself,
living according to your values, taking responsibility for yourself and
reacting positively and flexibly to feedback) to the seemingly ordinary or even
ridiculous: get adequate sleep, drink lots of water, never eat alone. Q1) How much do you think success depend on a) working hard, B)
optimism, C) luck? Q2) What are the disadvantages of being successful in life? Q3) If you could be exceptionally successful at one thing in particular,
what would it be? Why? Q4) What is more important to you, success or happiness? Why? TOPIC 2) Foreigners' travel shows gaining popularity "Welcome, First Time in
Korea?" a travel show about foreigners visiting Korea for the first time,
has been receiving strong responses from viewers, reviving the genre that has
become a cliche on the small screen. The Thursday show airs on MBC Every1,
MBC's cable network, featuring foreign expats living in Korea who invite and
show around their friends and relatives from their home country. In the latest eighth episode, Daniel Lindemann, a cast member for popular
talk show "Non-Summit," and his three German friends stayed at a
traditional Korean hanok house in the historical city of Gyeongju, North
Gyeongsang Province, on the third day of their ten-day stay. They remarked on the beauty of
the house and wowed at the traditional Korean full-course meal, experiencing
unfamiliar floor seating. The next day, despite scorching weather, the four
insisted on climbing Mt. Bukhan, a mountain on the northern periphery of Seoul,
for a superb bird's-eye view of Seoul. They were surprised to find so many
climbers clad with full outdoor sportswear, saying "it feels like one of
the status symbols of wealth." "For foreigners who had no experience with Korean culture,
everything that we are so accustomed to, say, eating at a restaurant and riding
the subway, can be an event. This makes the show so special and continues to
catch viewers' attention," culture critic Jung Duk-hyun said. "By
watching them, viewers get to see familiar things from a whole new point of
view, rediscovering things that have become part of their daily life." "Welcome, First Time in Korea?" brings more than just the
healing and vicarious satisfaction any travel reality show can give. What makes
those German friends' journey more special from the rest of the mushrooming
travel shows is the unique way of their travel, Jung said. "Many travel shows feature people going to beautiful places and
enjoying their time. But the travel of Lindemann and his friends was about
finding out and learning about Korean culture," he said. "They
wondered at everything. They tried to compare it with their culture and understand
the cultural differences. Viewers could see their earnest passion to learn
about Korea." Instead of visiting typical tourist attractions, they visited the
Demilitarized Zone that separates the two Koreas, thinking about their own
history and Korea's. They also visited Seodaemun Prison, where Korean
liberation activists were tortured and killed during the 1910-45 Japanese
occupation, saying the Japanese government should apologize for its past
wrongdoings. JTBC will launch "My Foreign Friend" in October, where three
cast members go to the homes of people who are of the same age but from
different backgrounds and countries. The cast members will join the daily lives
of their foreign friends. In November, O'live TV will launch global
home-sharing reality show "Seoul Mate" where foreigners will be
featured staying three days at local celebrities' homes. Q1) Do you like the showing
of Korea culutre to Foreigner in TV show? Q2) What is your opinion
about high price for Korean food in abroad country? Q3) Every nation has good
points and bad points, do you tell your foreign friend bad points of Korea? Q4) Do you think that
introducing Korea to foreigners will gain popularity in other channel and in
future?
Topic 3) Is Chuseok holiday stressful for you? An increasing
number of people in Korea are expected to spend the upcoming Chuseok holiday
alone, data showed Monday. Daumsoft, an artificial intelligence-based big data
analysis company, analyzed keywords searched online between Aug. 1 in 2015 and September
this year The
most-searched keyword was travel (27,312 searches), followed by (going on a)
diet (14,392, work (7365), part-time jobs (1,233). Hometown was the
fifth-most-searched word. The company said the data reflects a growing trend
among young Koreans who opt to stay single and seek out activities one can
enjoy without being interrupted by others. In the past, the
company said, many people associated national holidays with family-oriented
activities including making traditional food, visiting parents and relatives
and buying gifts for them. However, as many young adults choose to stay single
many of them consider the holidays a time off from work, and plan trips for the
holiday. The assessment
is apt, according to an office worker, surnamed Cho, who plans to stay home for
the weeklong Chuseok holiday this year. “I don’t want to
be bothered by anyone in general, not to mention by unnecessary scolding from
nosy relatives who pretend to care for me. They just ask me why I do not
conform with the societal norm that people should get married,” she said. “In the past
before I had a job, I had to visit my grandparents which did nothing but stress
me out and give me an earful about appreciating the values of getting married
and having children. I no longer want to tolerate that. That’s why I’m planning
to stay home alone, safe from interruption.” Q1)What are your
plans for the Chuseok holiday? Q2)What are some
of the traditions for Chuseok? Q3) Recalling
the memories of Chuseok, how was Chuseok when you were child?
Q4)What do you
think about people spending Chuseok alone, away from family? |
