At around 7:25 a.m. on August 31, 2025, a fire broke out on the second floor of a three-story multi-family house in Guam-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. The fire killed a mother in her 50s and her daughter in her 20s who were trapped inside, while a son in his 20s, who lived with them, was taken to the hospital with second-degree burns. Three other neighbors living on the first and third floors also suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation.
The fire department received the report and mobilized 32 fire trucks and 89 firefighters for the emergency extinguishing operation. The fire was completely put out in 35 minutes, at around 8:00 a.m., but witnesses said the scene was covered in black smoke and flames at the time of the fire.
The building where the fire occurred had a store on the first floor, two households on the second floor, and one household on the third floor. It was confirmed that only the deceased mother, daughter, and the injured son were at home at the time of the fire, while the father who lived with them was out.
The police and fire authorities are conducting a joint investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. A police official said, "There is no evidence of a crime so far, but we are investigating all possibilities." They plan to get a statement from the injured son about the situation before the fire as soon as he recovers.
