"우리를 축복하소서, 신성한 수여. 신들과 인간을 창조한 이여!
오, 거룩하고 거룩한 테트락티스여! 영원히 흐르는 창조의 뿌리와 근원을 담고 있는 이여!
신성한 수는 깊고 순수한 단일성에서 시작하여 거룩한 넷(4)에 이르고,
그 후 만물의 어머니이자, 모든 것을 포함하고, 모든 것을 경계 지으며,
처음 태어난, 절대 흔들리지 않는, 지치지 않는 거룩한 10(ten)을 낳나니,

피타고라스(고대 그리스어: Πυθαγόρας, 영어: Pythagoras, 기원전 570년 ~ 기원전 495년)는 이오니아의 그리스 철학자이자, 피타고라스 학파라 불린 컬트 종교 단체의 교주이다.


피타고라스에 관해 알려진 정보가 대부분 그가 죽고 몇 세기 후에 쓰여진 것이라서, 신뢰할 수 있는 자료가 매우 드물다. 피타고라스는 사모스 섬에서 태어났으며, 아마도 어린 시절 이집트를 비롯하여 여러 지방을 널리 여행하면서 학식을 닦았을 것으로 생각된다.

기원전 530년 경, 피타고라스는 남부 이탈리아의 크로토네로 이동하여 종교적인 학파를 세웠다. 피타고라스의 제자들은 피타고라스가 개발한 종교적 의식과 훈련을 수행하고 그의 철학 이론을 공부했다. 학파는 크로톤의 정치에도 적극 간섭했는데, 이가 결국 그 자신들의 몰락을 불러왔다.


피타고라스 학파가 회합하던 건물은 방화로 소실되었고 피타고라스는 도시를 떠날 수 밖에 없었다. 그는 말년을 메타폰툼에서 보냈다고 한다.

The Tetractys Oath

Pythagoreans also swore by the Tetractys, a sacred symbol of ten dots arranged in a triangle (representing numbers 1-4, totaling 10).

The oath was:

"By that pure, holy, four-lettered name on high,
/ Nature's eternal fountain and supply, /
The parent of all souls that living be, /
By him, with faith find oath, I swear to thee".



This verse is part of the sacred oath of the Pythagorean brotherhood, swearing by the Tetractys, a sacred symbol consisting of ten dots arranged in a triangle (four rows) that represented the organization of space, the four classical elements, and the divine, creative source of all life.
