Across the Nation, ‘No Kings’ Protesters Rally to Oppose Trump
Demonstrators spoke out against what they called authoritarian actions of the Trump administration as Republicans cast the events as un-American

Hundreds of thousands of protesters thronged city centers and parks for a national day of “No Kings” rallies, challenging what they say are authoritarian actions by President Trump, whom they portray as acting more like a king than a president.
More than 200,000 demonstrators gathered in Washington, D.C., according to event organizers, while tens of thousands more packed Grant Park in Chicago and Boston Common. Participants topped 100,000 across New York City, according to the New York Police Department, which said it made “zero protest-related arrests.” As events dwindled into the evening, authorities in several cities said the rallies ended peacefully. “Thank you for keeping it classy San Diego,” the police department there said on X, noting crowds were more than 25,000.
Many wore whimsical costumes, including inflatable dinosaurs and colonial wigs, creating a festival-like atmosphere—although the events snarled traffic and blocked storefronts in some areas.
The “No Kings” coalition, which includes prominent liberal groups such as MoveOn, estimated that demonstrations in more than 2,700 cities and towns drew nearly seven million people, two million more than the “No Kings” rallies in June. Saturday’s protests unfolded amid a government shutdown, expanded Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and debates over federal troop deployments in U.S. cities.
Many of the events took place in small, politically mixed suburbs, where residents divided on Trump debated the need for the protests on local social-media pages. “He won. Why can’t people just wait and accept it?” wrote a commenter on a community Facebook group In Easton, Mass., Dan Jameson, a 38-year-old Trump voter there, attended a local “No Kings” rally anyway, saying, “I didn’t foresee the kind of consolidation of power that he’s been going for.”
