밥 말리는 자메이카 출신 음악가이다.

그는 제3세계 음악인 레게 장르의 저변을 세계적인 수준으로 확대시킨 거장으로 평가받는다.

대마초 합법화 운동으로도 유명하다.

밥 말리는 버니 웨일러, 피터 토시와 함께 16세에 가수로서 정식으로 활동을 시작했다.

그들은 드리프터즈, 임프레션즈, 샘 쿡, 컨트리 가수 짐 리브스와 당시 자메이카의 토속음악의 영향을 많이 받았다.

1962년에 그는 Wailing Rudeboys로 알려진 Teenagers와 함께 첫번째 음반인 "Judge Not"을 발표했다.

이후, 팀명으로 웨일러스(Wailers)를 채택하고 정치적인 내용을 담은 평범하지 않은 곡들을 발표하기 시작했다.

이어 자메이카에 서서히 퍼지고 있던 'SKA'비트 음악을 시도했고, 그래서 "rude boy music"으로 불리기도 했다.
1966년에 밥 말리는 리타 앤더슨과 결혼하여 어머니와 함께 미국으로 갔다가 자메이카로 돌아온다.
이때에 자메이카에서 급속히 성장한 래스터패리교가 그에게 많은 영향을 주었다.
