Jane Austen’s 250th birthday today- Sarah Lois, a Malaysian filmmaker

In honour of what would have been Jane Austen’s 250th birthday today, we spoke to Sarah Lois, a Malaysian filmmaker. Sarah, who wrote and directed a comedy titled Sisters Before Misters while studying as part of her Chevening scholarship, said she first recognised the power of personal choice and drawing boundaries when she read this quote in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

“Growing up in an Asian context, I found myself often bombarded with well-meaning but often nosy questions by family members, friends and even strangers (particularly about our love lives if unmarried or absence of children if one is married). In our politeness, we reply in awkward discomfort and a forceful smile. I have used it word-for-word on multiple occasions to great success (mine) and horror (to those who do the questioning)."

Sarah Lois is a Malaysian filmmaker that has produced contemporary Austen-inspired content. She says Jane Austen's writing greatly influenced her thoughts on society, family life, marriage and friendship, particularly when writing stories surrounding those themes.
