Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Back Won-Kuk conducted an intensive inspection of preparations at key transportation hubs on May 29th, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit to be held in Gyeongju this fall.

During the APEC period, foreign visitors, including key leaders, are expected to mainly enter through Gimhae Airport and Incheon Airport, and will use Gyeongju Station, highways, and national roads when traveling to the venue.

This site inspection focused on comprehensively examining the preparations at major transportation hubs along the travel routes to ensure that visitors can move smoothly from arrival to the conference venue.

Vice Minister Back visited Gimhae Airport, which is expected to be the first point of arrival for foreign visitors, and inspected the status of runways, parking aprons, and security checkpoints. He also carefully examined the facility improvement status of major roads near the venue, such as the construction of a multi-lane high-pass system at the Gyeongju tollgate and the maintenance of National Road 31, as well as the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project planned to be built near the venue.

In addition, he visited Gyeongju Station, which will be the first impression of Gyeongju for visitors using the KTX, and checked preparations for welcoming guests, such as the renovation of restrooms and the installation of foreign language signs within the station.

Vice Minister Back encouraged the on-site personnel, emphasizing that "The APEC Summit is an important event that enhances national prestige and contributes to regional economic revitalization, and smooth traffic is an essential foundation for a successful event." He reiterated his request to do their best to ensure thorough preparation for the remaining period.

국토교통부 백원국 제2차관은 5월 29일, 올 가을 경주에서 개최될 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의를 앞두고 주요 교통 거점의 준비 상황을 집중적으로 점검했습니다.

APEC 기간 동안 주요 정상들을 포함한 외국인 방문객들은 주로 김해공항과 인천공항을 통해 입국하게 되며, 행사장 이동 시에는 경주역, 고속도로 및 국도 등을 이용할 것으로 예상됩니다.

이번 현장 점검은 방한객이 입국부터 회의장까지 불편함 없이 이동할 수 있도록 이동 경로상의 주요 교통 거점별 준비 상황을 종합적으로 살피는 데 중점을 두었습니다.

백 차관은 외국인 방문객이 가장 먼저 이용할 것으로 예상되는 김해공항을 방문하여 활주로, 주기장, 보안 검색장 등의 현황을 점검했습니다. 또한, 경주 톨게이트의 다차로 하이패스 구축, 국도 31호선 정비 등 행사장 인근 주요 도로의 시설 개량 현황과 구축 예정인 지능형 교통체계(ITS) 사업 현황도 세심하게 살폈습니다.

이와 함께 KTX를 이용하는 방문객들에게 경주의 첫인상이 될 경주역을 방문하여 역사 내 화장실 개량, 외국어 안내판 설치 계획 등 손님 맞이 준비 상황을 점검했습니다.

백 차관은 현장 관계자들을 격려하며 "APEC 정상회의는 국가 위상을 높이고 지역 경제 활성화에도 기여하는 중요한 행사인 만큼, 원활한 교통은 성공적인 개최의 필수 기반"이라고 강조했습니다. 그는 남은 기간 동안 차질 없이 준비될 수 있도록 최선을 다해 줄 것을 다시 한번 당부했습니다.
