과거에 대한 향수를 갖고 지난 일들을 돌아다보면 세세한 기억은 가려지고 장밋빛으로 물든 좋은 추억만 떠오르게 마련이다.

그저 그런 기억들은 잊어버리고 좋은 순간만 추슬러서 옛날엔 모든 게 훨씬 더 좋았다는 식으로 기억하기 쉽다. 이건 축구에서 유독 자주 벌어지는 일이고, 내 입으로 말하긴 싫지만 나이가 들수록 더 심해진다.

저마다 자기 시절 팀이, 저기 시절의 선수가 최고였다고 생각한다. 그렇지 않다는 증거가 충분한데도 말이다. 아버지나 할아버지께 물어보면 다들 그 때가 더 나았다고 대답할 것이다.

요즘 들어 일부 스타 선수들이 더 이른 나이에 전성기를 맞는다는 이론에 대해서는 의구심이 든다. 매일 엄청난 훈련을 하고 기술을 갈고 닦는다면 30대에 다가섰을 즈음 더 나은 축구선수가 되는 것이 당연할 것이다.

뒤늦게 빛을 본 이언 라이트, 데이비드 플랫 등의 선수도 있고, 일반적으로 축구 선수는 서른 직전에 절정에 올랐다가 그 뒤로는 쇠퇴기를 걷는다는 공감대가 형성되어 있다.

축구는 큰 폭으로 발전해 지금보다 속도감이 떨어졌던 70년대와는 비교가 안 될 정도로 달라졌다. 맹렬한 속도로 경기가 진행되고, 체력적인 면이 극도로 강조된다. 선수들은 주기적으로 부상을 입고 경기의 모든 면면이 언론의 스포트라이트를 받는다. 지금 프리미어리그에서 뛰려면 육상선수만큼 뛸 줄 알아야 한다.

이런 면들이 어린 스타들에게 유리한 것일까? 따라서 프리미어 리그 선수는 이제 20대 초반이 절정이라고 결론을 내려도 될까? 이 선수들이 20대 후반에 들어서면 대부분은 고질적 부상과 과로에 시달리고, 새로 치고 올라오는 신예들에게 자리를 빼앗길까 부담을 느낀다.

물론, 모든 포지션이 그런 것만은 아니다. 골키퍼는 나이 많은 선수들이 중심이고, 노련한 센터백는 그 누구보다 가치가 높으며, 특급 플레이메이커는 오랜 경험을 통해 시야와 기술을 얻는 것이 일반적이다.

하지만 지난 10년 사이 잉글랜드 대표팀에서 최고로 꼽혔던 선수 세 명을 예로 들어보자. 데이비드 베컴, 마이클 오언, 웨인 루니 – 여전히 최고의 기량을 자랑한다는 점에서는 이의가 없다.

그렇다면 이들의 선수 생활 최고의 골은 무엇이었나?

베컴? 글쎄, 개인적으로 가장 좋았던 골은 보비 찰튼 경의 슈팅과 비교되기도 했던 토트넘 전의 그 자유분방한 대포알 슛이지만 대부분의 사람들은 95/96 시즌 개막일, 윔블던 자기 진영에서 쏘았던 놀라운 골을 꼽을 것이라고 생각한다. 당시 베컴의 나이는 스물이었다.

그리스 전의 프리킥을 꼽는 의견도 있겠지만, 중요성 면에서는 최고였을지 몰라도 골 자체로는 최고라 하기 힘들다. 현재 LA갤럭시 소속인 슈퍼스타 베컴은 그 외에도 기억에 남을만한 골들을 기록했다. 리버풀, 웨스트햄 전에서 넣은 골들, 수없이 많은 세트 플레이가 떠오른다. 하지만 과연 윔블던 스트라이크를 능가하는 골이냐고 물었을 때는 자신이 없다.

다음은 오언이다. 그의 베스트 골에 대해서는 별다른 이견이 없으리라고 본다. 1998 월드컵 본선, 아르헨티나와의 경기에서 멋진 단독 드리블 끝에 차분히 마무리했던 바로 그 골이다. 당시 리버풀 스트라이커의 나이는 겨우 18세, 경이로운 플레이로 축구계를 뒤흔들었고, 그 후로 그 시절을 능가하는 골을 보여주지 못하고 있다.

마지막으로 루니에 대해 이야기하자. 어쩌면 아직 스물 한 살 밖에 되지 않았고, 축구 선수로 앞날이 창창한 그를 이 명단에 넣는 것은 바람직하지 않은 일일 수도 있다. 하지만, 맨체스터 유나이티드의 포워드가 자꾸만 부상을 입고 있는 지금, 그를 향한 크나큰 기대들이 오히려 그에게 독이 되는 건 아닐까. 진심으로 그런 일만은 없기를 바란다.

그렇다면 루니의 베스트 골은 무엇이었나. 이 경우에는 후보로 꼽을만한 장면이 더 많다. 에버턴에서 기록한 프리미어십 첫 골, 아스널 데이비드 시먼의 방어를 번개처럼 뚫고 나갔던 골을 빠뜨릴 수 없다. FA컵 미들즈브러 전에서 넣은 2골도 떠오르지만 그의 베스트 골은 올드트래포드에서 뉴캐슬 유나이티드를 상대로 기록한 환상적인 발리슛이었다고 생각한다. 당시 유나이티드에서 첫 시즌을 보내고 있던 루니의 나이는 19세였다.

루니가 챔피언스 리그 페네르바체 전을 통해 유나이티드에 데뷔하면서 기록한 해트트릭도 잊을 수 없다.

물론 축구에는 멋진 골을 넣는 것 이상으로 해야 할 일들이 많다. 선수 생활 초반에 멋진 골을 넣을 수 있는 이유는 되지 않을 듯한 상황에서도 두려움 없이, 용기와 자신감을 갖고 부딪혀보기 때문이란 생각도 든다. 시간이 가면 선수들은 확률에 의해 경기하도록 단련되고, 자기 스스로가 아닌 팀을 위해 어떤 것이 최상의 선택인지 판단하면서 무모한 시도를 서서히 줄여간다.

어쩌면 과거에 대한 향수가 이 모든 것에 끼어든 까닭일 수도 있다. 팝 음악을 생각해보길. 오아시스 최고의 작품은 단연코 1,2집이었다. 로비 윌리엄스 최고의 노래? 첫 앨범에 수록됐던 ‘Angels’. 조지 마이클은? 웸 앨범에서 처음 솔로로 불렀던 'Careless Whisper’다.

이런 예는 끝도 없이 많다. 누군가가 대중의 시선 속으로 처음 뛰어든 순간이 가장 강한 인상을 남기는 것일 수도 있다. 특히 TV 중계가 무차별적으로 쏟아지는 지금 같은 시기라면 매주 누가 최고의 리그에서 뛰는지 빨리 파악하는 편이 편하다. 우리는 새로운 재주로 무장한 새로운 스타가 나타나 어필해주기를 열망한다.

베컴, 오언, 루니가 근래 최고의 잉글랜드 대표선수라는 점은 명백하다. 이미 보았던 것이 그들의 베스트 골이었는지 궁금할 뿐이다. 루니의 경우, 내가 꼽은 뉴캐슬 전의 놀라운 스트라이크가 베스트 골이 아니기를 바란다. 그에겐 앞으로 많은 시간이 남아 있기 때문이다.

하지만 프리미어 리그가 오직 적자만이 생존할 수 있는, 젊은 선수들의 각축장으로 변해가고 있다는 부분은 논쟁할 가치가 충분하다고 본다. 그리고, 우리는 요즘 벌어지고 있는 장면들을 보면서 숨막히는 플레이로 우리의 시선을 사로잡았던 베컴, 오언, 루니 시절을 비교하며 과거를 향한 향수에 영향을 받은 결론을 내놓을 것이다.

We all appreciate that nostalgia can cloud our memories as we look back with rose-tinted spectacles at what happened in the past.

It is easy to pick out the good moments, forget the indifferent ones, and recall that everything was much better than it actually was. This is particularly the case with football and, I hate to say it, as you get older it becomes more obvious.

Each generation thinks their team, their players were the best, even if evidence might not totally support this theory. Ask your father or grandfather – things were always better in their day.

Yet I’ve been wondering if there is something in a theory that some star players actually peak early nowadays. Surely this cannot be the case as they train prodigiously each day, hone their skills and obviously must become better footballers by the time they reach their thirties.

Yes, there are late developers – Ian Wright, David Platt etc – and it used to be generally accepted that a footballer’s peak was just before the age of 30, after that it was all starting to go downhill.

The game has evolved to such an extent it is probably unrecognisable from the slower paced era of the seventies. Matches are played at a furious pace, it is incredibly physical, players are regularly sustaining injuries and everything is played out in the full glare of the media spotlight. You must be an athlete to play in today’s Premier League.

Does this mean that younger stars are having the edge? Hence, the peak for Premier League players is now early twenties? Come their late-twenties, many are carrying injuries, feeling the strain and seeing pressure on their places from the youngsters coming through.

Of course this is only true for some positions. Goalkeepers are often older, an experienced centre back is sometimes invaluable and a top midfield playmaker has usually acquired his vision and skills over the years.

But think of three of England’s best internationals over the past decade or so: David Beckham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. All still supremely talented, I would never argue against that.

Now name their best-ever goal.

Beckham? Well my personal favourite is a rocket at Tottenham hit with such abandon that it drew comparisons with the great Sir Bobby Charlton’s shooting. However, I accept most people will select his remarkable effort from his own half against Wimbledon on the opening day of the 1995/1996 season. Beckham’s age at the time? 20.

Some will point to his free kick against Greece, which was probably the most important, but not the best. The LA Galaxy megastar has scored other memorable goals, ones against Liverpool, West Ham and numerous set-pieces spring to mind, but have any bettered the Wimbledon strike? Arguably not.

Right, next on to Owen. His best goal? Little debate here surely, the incredible solo dribble and calm finish against Argentina on the biggest stage of all during the 1998 World Cup finals. The then Liverpool striker was only 18 and rocked the footballing world with his dramatic impact. He has not scored a better goal since.

Finally, let us look at Rooney. It is somewhat unfair to include him on the list as he is still only 21 and has so many more years ahead of him in the game. But, as the Manchester United forward picks up more injuries, will the huge expectations on his shoulders gradually wear him down? I sincerely hope not.

So what has been Rooney’s best goal? There have been more candidates here. His first Premiership goal for Everton, a thunderbolt past Arsenal’s David Seaman, warrants a mention. Two against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup for United spring to mind but I reckon his best was the amazing volley against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. It was in his first season as a United player and he was 19.

It is also worth remembering Rooney’s United debut featured a remarkable Champions League hat-trick against Fenerbahce.

Of course, there is more to football than scoring great goals. I feel one of the reasons why these great goals were scored early in the player’s careers is because they have no fear and play with such confidence and ambition that they are more inclined to try the improbable. As the years wear on, players are trained to play percentages, take the option best for the team not for themselves and, gradually, take less risks.

Maybe it is all nostalgia and part of a bigger picture. Think of pop music. Oasis’ best work is undoubtedly from their first two albums. Robbie Williams’s best song? Angels from his first album. George Michael’s? Careless Whisper, his first solo track.

I could go on. Perhaps there is nothing quite like seeing somebody break into the public consciousness. Particularly now with blanket television coverage, it is feasible we just quickly grow used to those who play at the top level week in, week out. We yearn for new stars with new tricks and new styles to alert our minds.

There is no doubt that Beckham, Owen and Rooney are amongst the best England internationals of the recent era. I just wonder if we have already seen their best goals. I hope I’m wrong, certainly in the case of Rooney who has many years to better that Newcastle wonder strike.

What is worth arguing is that the Premier League is becoming a young man’s game where only the fittest survive. And that nostalgia will always affect our judgement when we try and compare what is happening today with when we first clapped eyes upon players like Beckham, Owen and Rooney, who took our breaths away.
