origin: There are many ideas about where this phrase comes from. One popular theory, which doesn’t have much evidence to support it, is that the expressions comes from people who would stand on a bucket with a rope around their neck and then kick the bucket away to hang themselves. The more likely origin is that in the 16th century England, animals were hung by their feet on wooden frames called buckets while they were slaughtered. These animals would kick at the bucket, the frame they were hanging from, as they were slaughtered, hence the phrase.

이 표현의 유래에 대해서는 여러 의견들이 있다. 그리 뒷받침되는 증거들은 많지 없지만, 가장 유명한 설에 따르면 자살하려는 사람이양동이 위에 올라서서 목에 줄을 매달고 양동이를 걷어차는 것에서 나온 표현이라고 한다. 보다 설득력 있는 기원은 16세기에 영국에서는 동물들을도축할 때 동물들의 발을 ‘Bucket’이라 불리는 나무틀에  묶어서 매달았다고한다. 동물들이 도축될 때 이 Bucket을 걷어 찬다는 점에서 이 표현이 나왔다는 설이 있다.

양동이를 걷어 찬다는 것은 죽는다는 뜻이다.
