The story of the judgment of Solomon (I Kings 3:16—28) is a subject widely depicted in Christian art to prefigure the Last Judgment. Solomon was called upon to judge between the claims of two prostitutes, each of whom had recently given birth to a child.
One infant had died and each woman claimed the living child as her own. Solomon ordered the living child to be cut in two and one half given to each of the women. At this, the true mother (presumably the woman at the left) revealed herself by renouncing her claim to the child in order that its life might be spared.
