4) 관용적 용법

= You have good reason to say so.

2. Can
1) 능력 : be able to
∙ Can you play the piano? Yes, I can.
2) 추측 의문문 : 도대체 ~일까?
부정문 : ~일리가 없다.
∙ Can he have done such a thing?
∙ No, he cannot have done such a thing.
3) 관용적 용법
∙ We cannot praise him too much.
=It is impossible to overpraise him.
∙ He is as happy as can be. 더할 나위 없이 ~하다.
= He is very happy.
3. Must
1) 필요, 의무 : have to
∙ Must I go? No, you need not.
2) 추측 : ~임에 틀림없다.
∙ He must be a great scholar.
= It is certain that he is a great scholar.

4. Will. Would
1) Will (Would) : 현재(과거)의 불규칙적인 습관
∙ I would often take a walk before breakfast.
2) Would : wish to
∙ I would not miss the chance.
3) 주어의 강한 의지, 주장, 고집, 거절
∙ The door would not open.
4) 기타
∙ Would you pass me the salt? 공손한 표현
∙ I would rather stay at home than go out.
= I prefer staying at home to going out.
5. Should
1) 의무, 당연 : ~해야 한다.
∙You should obey the law.
2) 과거에 대한 유감, 후회, 비난 : should + have + p.p
∙You should have come earlier.
= You had to come earlier but you didn't.
3) 유감, 놀람, 당연, 필요를 나타내는 주절 다음에 올 때
∙It is natural that you should pass the exam.
* natural, necessary, proper, right, important, strange, curious,
a pity, regrettable
4) 주장, 요구, 제안, 명령을 나타내는 주절에 계속 될 때
∙I insisted that he should pay the money.

6. Ought to (should와 유사)
1) 금지
