🎅🏻산타클로스는 기독교의 인류애와 박애주의의 상징이다. 지금의 산타클로스는 1700년 전, 소아시아 터키의 파타라에 살았던 성 니콜라스(Saint Nicholas) 주교에서 유래한다. 성 니콜라스는 오늘날의 산타클로스를 있게 한 실존 인물로 어렸을 때부터 남의 어려움을 보면 그냥 지나치지 못하는 착한 아이였다. 배고파하는 사람에게는 자기 음식을 나누어 주었고 옷이 없어 추위에 떠는 사람들에게는 자신의 옷을 벗어 주었으며, 돈이 없는 사람에게는 자신의 돈을 주었다. 하나님에 대한 독실한 신앙을 갖고 있던 성 니콜라스는 예루살렘 성지 순례를 마치고 터키로 돌아가던 어느 날, 큰 폭풍우가 쳤을 때 선원들을 위해 기도해주었다. 이를 계기로 성 니콜라스는 어부들을 보호하는 상징이 되기도 했다. 그렇지만 성니콜라스는 무엇보다 어린이들을 사랑하고 어린이들을 보호하는 수호신으로 널리 알려져 있다. 12세기 초부터 프랑스의 수녀들에 의해 성 니콜라스 축일 하루 전날인 12월5일 가난한 아이들에게 선물을 주는 풍습이 생겨났고, 어린이와 가난한 이들을 위한 성 니콜라스의 미담이 유럽 전역으로 퍼져나가면서 유럽인들,에게 성 니콜라스가 알려지게 되었다. 그러다가 서기 17세기경 아메리카 신대륙에 이주한 네덜란드인들이 세인트 니콜라스를 신터 클라스라고 부르면서 자선을 베푸는 사람의 모델로 삼았다. 그러면서 미국에 이주한 네덜라드인들을 중심으로 미국 전역에 지금의 산타클로스라는 인물로 재창조된 것이다. 성 니콜라스는 어떤 분인가요? 성 니콜라스는 어린이, 뱃사람, 여성, 가난한 사람들의 수호성인이다. 소아시아 지역의 세인트 니콜라스(성 니콜라스)의 이야기가 중세 뱃길을 따라 유럽 곳곳에 전해지면서, 유럽 사람들은 세인트 니콜라스의 선행에 감명받았고 그의 신앙심과 인류에 대한 애정을 존경하게 되었다. 그러면서 유럽에서 그의 이름을 따서 지은 많은 아이들이 생겨났고, 도시와 마을, 섬의 지명까지도 그의 이름을 따라 했다. 현재 유럽과 미주에 있는 세인트 니콜라스란 이름의 교회, 수도원, 병원은 수천 개도 넘는다. 많은 사람들이 세인트 니콜라스를 수호성인으로 섬기며 어려운 일이 있을 때면 그의 도움을 기대하였다. 어린이들이나 학생, 선원, 결혼은 앞둔 처녀들은 물론이고 여행객, 상인 심지어는 죄수들까지 그를 자신들의 수호성인으로 삼았다. 세인트 니콜라스에 대한 각별한 존경과 사랑이 오늘날의 산타클로스로 발전한 것은 결코 우연이 아니다. 이는 세상 사람들이 세인트 니콜라스가 자신보다 이웃을, 남을 사랑했던 그 선행을 생활에서 보고자 하는 것이고 자신들의 생활에서 실천하고자 하는 아름다운 마음에서 우러난 것이다. 산타클로스는 어느 나라 사람일까? 대부분의 사람들이 오해하고 있는 것 중 하나가 산타클로스는 아마 북부 추운 나라 어딘가에서 탄생했을 거라 믿는 것이다. 그러나 산타클로스는 터키의 중앙지역, 아나톨리아주의 남쪽 물라(Myra, 현재는 칼레; Kale)라는 곳에서 태어난 성 니콜라스를 모델로 하였기 때문에 따뜻한 지역에 사셨고, 터키 사람이라고 보아야 하지 않을까요? 그렇다면 산타 할아버지는 처음부터 털모자를 쓰지는 않으셨을 수도 있다.
