주님! 주님께서는 하고자 하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있습니다.” 복음의 한센인은 예수님을 믿었습니다. 그분께서 하느님의 아드님이심을 믿었습니다. 그분께서 지니신 애정을 믿었습니다. 그러기에 기적을 체험합니다. “내가 하고자 하니 깨끗하게 되어라.” 주님께서는 그의 믿음을 받아 주셨습니다. 그에게 애정을 드러내신 것입니다. 그분의 따뜻한 마음입니다.

의사 선생님 한 분이 계십니다. 매주 월요일이면 한센인들에게 진료와 수술을 해 주는 분입니다. 치료를 받는 사람들은 그가 누구인지 압니다. 자신들의 얼굴과 손발을 닦아 주는 분이 보통 의사가 아니라는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 그는 피부과를 전공했지만 한센인들을 위해 성형 공부를 다시 했습니다. 주위 사람들은 돈을 더 벌려고 그러는 줄 알았습니다. 그러나 그가 매달렸던 것은 환자들의 상처를 고치기 위한 성형 공부였습니다. 그는 지금도 한센인들을 위해 시간과 열정을 봉헌하고 있습니다.

누군가 “왜 이런 일을 하느냐?” 하고 물었습니다. 답변은 ‘의사이기 때문에’가 전부였습니다. 그러면서 덧붙이는 말을 했습니다. “한센병은 발병하더라도 5일만 복약하면 전염성은 없어진답니다. 꾸준히 치료하면 완쾌되는 병입니다.” 그는 천사입니다. 예수님의 모습을 드러내는 이 시대의 숨은 천사입니다.

주님께서는 아브라함과 계약을 맺으시고 후손들에게 지키도록 가르칠 것을 명하십니다. 그런 뒤에는 아내인 사라에게서 아들이 태어날 것을 알려 주십니다. 아브라함과 사라는 나이가 많았지만 기적의 자녀인 ‘이사악’을 점지해 주신 것입니다(제1독서). “주님께서는 하고자 하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있습니다.” 한센병 환자는 애절하게 청했습니다. 그는 예수님의 능력을 굳게 믿었던 것입니다. 당신을 믿고 다가오는 사람을 주님께서는 거절한 적이 없으셨습니다. 기적은 언제나 믿음과 함께합니다(복음).

Reading 1
Gn 17:1, 9-10, 15-22

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him
and said: "I am God the Almighty.
Walk in my presence and be blameless."

God also said to Abraham:
"On your part, you and your descendants after you
must keep my covenant throughout the ages.
This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you
that you must keep:
every male among you shall be circumcised."

God further said to Abraham:
"As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai;
her name shall be Sarah.
I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her.
Him also will I bless; he shall give rise to nations,
and rulers of peoples shall issue from him."
Abraham prostrated himself and laughed as he said to himself,
"Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old?
Or can Sarah give birth at ninety?"
Then Abraham said to God,
"Let but Ishmael live on by your favor!"
God replied:  "Nevertheless, your wife Sarah is to bear you a son,
and you shall call him Isaac.
I will maintain my covenant with him as an everlasting pact,
to be his God and the God of his descendants after him.
As for Ishmael, I am heeding you:  I hereby bless him.
I will make him fertile and will multiply him exceedingly.
He shall become the father of twelve chieftains,
and I will make of him a great nation.
But my covenant I will maintain with Isaac,
whom Sarah shall bear to you by this time next year."
When he had finished speaking with him, God departed from Abraham.

Gospel
Mt 8:1-4

When Jesus came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
And then a leper approached, did him homage, and said,
"Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean."
He stretched out his hand, touched him, and said,
"I will do it.  Be made clean."
His leprosy was cleansed immediately.
Then Jesus said to him, "See that you tell no one,
but go show yourself to the priest,
and offer the gift that Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them."
