I had been preparing for my trip to New Zealand for a long time since I was invited to participate in the wedding ceremony of Carlos and Rachel. I was planning to fly to NZ by Korean Airline at 5 o'clock Feb. 4. However my mother-in law was suddenly attacked by the 3rd cerebral hemorrhage and she fell down. An Ambulance came through 119 and she was beginning to become more comatose, trembling in every limb. She was taken to the near hospital, Taebong and we were feared during the first aid for her, would she survive?
October 24th of the lunar calendarAs it was the last night of December of the lunar calender, there was no doctor who could take a first aid for her even if there was an emergency room. A doctor came through the emergency call and took a CT picture for her head but the doctor also didn't know what to do. He urged us to carry her to the hospital, Samsung. The result of CT photographing showed that there was no possibility to survive, fatal.
A half of the brain space was full of blood. An private ambulance was called and came she was taken to the hospital, Samsung. The plastic hose was used for the protection of a patient against obstruction of the airway. According to the doctor, some food remains went into the lungs while she was vomiting, her brains got severely damaged and the stage to operate had passed her bad condition has already passed this phase for brain operation and in case of the operation the possibility to death might be over 90%.
We heard that something done for her life lengthening would result in more pain to her,The doctor said that as she had no possibility to survive and there was no room for her in the hospital, she had to be taken home. After our discussion about her, we decided that we would carry her to the hospital, Youngnam, where she had stayed.
The emergency room of the hospital was quiet but she was in more danger. She has closed her eyes and her short breath continued. 3 days of this pain had passed and she passed away on the Feb 4th, 2003. We felt sorry and wept loudly for having her well while she was alive.
I sincerely hoped that she would be alive until I came back from my travel to New Zealand. but by heaven and earth, she went to another world. I remember now, she had difficulty having her meals and I put a sheet of newspaper on her neck because she dropped her food at table. Whenever she sat on the chair, she dropped into it. and it was hard to walk. I just prayed for the repose of her soul. " How hard did you live your life because of your illness? Please sleep conveniently without any anxiety. I wanted to cancel my trip to New Zealand because of her, whether I went or not was no use to her. I had to leave. I felt sorry to my wife and I had no word to talk to her, But I didn't want to give up all the things I had prepared for.
I ate lunch in a hurry with my son, Jae-woong and took the bus, Limuzin bound for Kim Hae International Airport. The white cloud over the dark one looked like the figure of mother-in law. Sadness took a sudden attack. It took an hour to fly to Incheon International Airport from Kim Hae Airport. It was the first time for me to go abroad through Incheon International Airport. The ariport facilities in large scale, a vast airport area, and an end invisible landing strip, I got off the plane and was waiting for the Korean Air Line bound for New Zealand. There seemed to be many passangers to New Zealand. Instead of going to baggage claim area, I went to the transper. Gate 21 was located in the end of the airport. Lunch was nuddle and I ate rice and laver for dinner in front of the 21 Gate at 8:50 pm. The problem for my meal was another immediate one. Before I got on the plane, I called my wife and my son. I didn't know what to say for her mother's death. Passengers began to get on the plane. I had a seat in the passage way of the plane to NZ. On the side of the window sat two German passengers. They told me that they were working in the transfortation company in Whakatane, the city located in North East of NZ. and were going there. One of them offered going with them to me. I refused their offer because of a different direction I would go to. Taking off the Incheon National Airport , the airport that I looked out over was very grand. When the plane changed its direction, the plane was flying so low that one side wing of the plane seemed to touch the ground. I huddled up myself. At the moment I couldn't but think of the casualty of the Colombia. Thinking that If I die, my acquances would feel sorry and sad, the plane flew up to the sky powerfully.
The direction indicators on the landing strip looked like Neonsign. I set up my watch to the time of NZ and Korea.
I have a watch with two faces, one is for my country, the other is for overseas travelers. There is a 3 hour's difference between New Zealand and Korea time but 4 hours difference in a period of the summer time enforcement. Dinner was served between 10 and 10:30.
I asked for Beef Nudle and Wine. I gulped down a drink in low spirits. I was flushed and I got drunk a lot. It took almost 11 hours from Seoul to Auckland and two meals were served. I checked out through customs and on the way to Domestic Airport, I called Rachel in order to inform her that I had arrived in NZ with my cellphone I brought from Korea. I thought that it was good job to bring it because I had difficulty in telephoning. In other words, I didn't know well how to telephone in NZ. She was glad to hear the news that I had arrived in NZ and she let me know the telephone number of Molly's and I told her that as soon as I got the Wellington Airport, I would call her again. I was supposed to board at 2: 30 but I had about 2 hours to board. So I thouht that it would be good to arrived at the Wellington earlier than I expected and asked a airport officer if there was a plane to Wellington. Fortunately there was. So I arrived there one hour ealier than I planed to.
Wellington
Wellington City that I saw from the sky landing down was beautiful. I took some pictures through the window of the plane. As soon as I arrived, I called Molly, who was coming to meet me from Linx, that I would wait for them at baggage claim area of Wellington Airport Building. 30 minutes later Molly and Carlos appeared. They were the same healthy looking shape that I had seen 8 years ago. We embraced each other. It may have looked like the reunion of the long separated family. Carlos had a rent car of NZ and by the car, we went to the place where Racher's family were waiting for us. They were waiting for us at a cafe in a street of Wellington city. They welcomed us and I gave them a present, Korean Ginseng and Ginseng Tea , Mandolin for newlyweds and a wristlet for Rachel. They may not know how much they are. They are things that are so expensive in Korea. I thought the difference of culture might made them impossible to understand the value. They were appreciated for the things that I brought. They took me to the park in the highest hill which has good command a fine view using a track. Wellington Habor looked so beautiful with a background of the city building in the forest. They didn't distroy the nature but they used it well at it was. Their white houses and buldings looked like many swans sitting on the trees. They prepared for my 2 days' Wellington tour .
즉 signing of the treaty of Waitangi; Between white and Maori.
Februrary 5th was the day commemorates Waitangi Day, which "Wai" of Waitangi means "Water" and "tangi", "treaty"or "funeral". That is to say, Waitangi means signing of the treaty of Watangi between White and Maori. It was not easy for me to find out a hotel room. Molly and Racjel's family left for Levin because of the wedding ceremony. After two days' trip around the city of Wellington, we promised to meet at Levin. The short period didn't allow me to travel to the south island of NZ. So I decided to look around the suburbs of the city. I barely could find a hotel to stay for two nights similar to a cheapf inn of Korea . The hotel bill was $110 (Korean currency 75000won) for 2 nights. The name of the hotel was Cambridge Hotel. The Cambridge Hotel was crowded with people from all over the country. The inside of the building was dark and looked like a hangout for Mafia. People drinking in lobby had a gigantic frame. Many of the people in NZ looked fat. I felt that Korean people are more handsome and beautiful than they. TV sets in the room of the hotel were almost Korean LG products. I stopped at a community center to send an email to my son and make sure of my homepage, MSEforum in NZ. All the computer were using Maquintosh for window. When I tried to open "Hanmail.net, it shut down. It proves that the computers of Korea are better than those of NZ. The population using internet seemed to be smaller than that in Korea. The season is Summer in NZ here but it cools sometimes. It was fortunate to bring many clothes.
나는 Owhiro의 동쪽 The Esplanaide에 있는 The Black Cafe를 둘러 길게 뻗은 Haughton Bay Road를 먼 곳에서 바라보았다
Feb 6th
I spent one night in the state of a half sleepy and a half awake. I had difficulty to find out a restaurant for my meals.
I mean that it is a proper or good one for me. I bought two slices of bread , a bottle of water and came to my room. They were my today's dinner and my breakfast in the next morning. To have a trip, I had to be at the bus stop in front of City Information Center by 8;20 am. That is because Carlos made a reservation of city tour for me. I arrived there at 8:20. One who would tour with me was an English woman who looked 35 to 40. I could see the panorama of the beautiful city. Centering around Wellington Bay the buildings on the hills was showing off the white beauty. They won't distroy the nature but they will take advantage of it well. Korean people will distroy, change the lay of the land and build the buildings. This is in striking contrast to that in NZ. I traveled around the east of Owhiro, I stopped at the black cafe in the Esplanaide to have a cupf of coffee. I could see a long Haughton Bay Road from the distant place.
Driver Jason은 "Explore the road."
Our driver, Jason recommend me to walk and see the panorama of Breaker Bay. As I like mountain climbing, I accepted his offer promptly. Jason promised me that we would meet at a cafe, Breaker Cafe in Seatown 24st at 2 o'clock pm. He said to me, separating, " Explore the road. I walked along a ridgeline of the hill enjoying watching the scenery with hellp of map, as if I were finding a maze..An English woman left by the tour car. " I felt excited and worried about the exploration of searching for the promised place watching beautiful Breaker Bay. I took me an hour and a half to walk the Breaker Cafe. It was not difficult to find the Cafe. Exploring the area asking information was very helpful to me in learning English. I thought. As Jason told me, it was an exploration. I had a bit of bread as breakfast. So I felt hungry and tired. I passed a forest, watching a map and when I faced two divided trenches, I had difficulty of choosing which direction was right. I happened to meet an old man enjoying walking around the area. With his help, I could choose the right direction. He said to me, "To this trench." He called the road in the forest a trench. I could arrive at the Breaker Cafe in the Sea Town an hour early. I stopped at a small store which Black ran and bought some pies and milk. I went to the beach park with some benches to fill my stomack with the bread and milk. The strong wind was blowing toward the land hard. Wellingto is said to be famous for its wind. So they call Wellington windy wellington. The wind blowing from the sea made me feel fresh.
I sat on the bench in the park by myself and had lunch with the pies and milk. The wind blowing from the South, even though it was not summer, gave me fresh feeling like fall. I could watch people enjoy the wind surfing in the sea. The pies that I was eating tasted salty and strange and I wanted to vomit them but I though that I had to eat anything to live. So I chewed and swallowed it. I didn't know what material they had used for the pies. I met old couple enjoying suntan in the beach park. "They asked me where I had come from." "
I came from South Korea", I replied. Their concerns were about Iraq and North Korea. They said that TV of NZ had been telling about Iraq war and Nuke of North Korea. They aslo questioned why Iraq and North Korea had tried to make the weapons for numerous casualties instead of peace. Without fail, Jason arrived at the Cafe where he promised me to meet.at 12:40. Our tour continued again and Jason began to introduce the sights of Wellington fluently. I envy Jason, who was busy explaining to me about Wellinton and its outskirts. How can he speak English so fluently? ???????????????????. Of course, he must be a good guide and New Zealander though. While enjoying tour, an American tourist got on the car.
He introduced himself to us that he had been in Korea as stationary troops. I felt friendly toward him. He said that he had been away on leave and came to NZ. He added that he visited NZ every year. The time when we arrived at the starting place was about 2 o'clock p.m. I finished my tour schedule for western area of Wellinton. While I was walking back to Cambridge Hotel, I visited the street young people were fond of . Rock Cafes Cinemas, Bars were crowded with the young. It was dark inside of the bar similar to the bars which I had seen in England. The color of its wall and interior of the bar evoked a kind of burned pattern. The males with long hair, tatoos on th hand, dark skin( because of suntan) and healthy looking shape gave me strong impression. They were posing for loving each other and they kissed each other making sound. They looked like there were no future to them. Because of Waitangi Day, Cambridge Hotel was full of people. I wished that I had liked a kind of whisky. For dinner of the day, I had a marine products dish in Chinese resturant. I bought Corn anf Rice and came to my hotel.
Coach Bus came to my hotel to pick me up at 8 : 45, Feb 7th, The driver, Murray Hunte introduce himself.(His address is " 4 Seon Place Upper Hutt, NZ" and I met a beautiful English woman, Annette and an English old couple. . We were going to go sightseeing together. They were very kind and friendly. Soon we became friends. "Tomorrow is the day of Carlos and Rachel." They invited me to a motel where they were staying. So after my sightseeing , I was suppoed to go to their motel in Levin. The schedule was that we were planning to look around the southern part of NZ. The driver used the Highway to drive his car
As some locations were not open to the public, we couldn't visit there. Many seals were taking a nap on the rocks in the beach of Ngwai, the earth layer of which was soft was slowly being eroded by the waves. A group of tourists were enjoying the nature with the wind blowing from the South in the beach. We took a picture for visit commemoration with Annette, an english old couple, and a driver. I could see the fields for farming burning dry grass. The field in smoke was similar to that in Korea. On the way to Wellington, we visited a famous grape plantation where I bought a hat for for mountain climbing. And we stopped at a small restaurant to have some drink. I got Annette More's email address. I said to her, When I come back to Korea, I will send you some pictures which I took.
The car dropped me down in front of Wellington Station and went away. I had to go to Levin as our promise made with Carlos. I had 2 hours and 20 minutes left by the boarding time of the train. I had to buy a ticket to Levin. I didn't know how to check in for the train. I asked a station offer how to check in at first. Likewise the check in for the plane, make a reservation, when boarding, exchage the reservatoion ticket with the boarding ticket like the check in on a plane boarding. I made a reservation for the 7:50 train to Levin . I walked around the park in front of the staion. The festival for Waitangi Day were ongoing. Some singers were singing songs, rocks.and exciting citizens. Clean air in NZ seemed not to cut a direct ray of light from the sun. My face and hands seemed to be burned by strong ultraviolet ray. Many people were applyng
Chicken and Tomato and Rice.
I left for Levin by Northerner Scenic at about 7: 50. Panoram passing through the window of the train was similar to that of England, but the high mountains, to Korea's. The train arrived at Levin at 9:30, where Carlos and Richard had been wainting for my arrival. As soon as the door of the train they welcomed me, and Richard embraced me. How happy I was to see Richard at Levin!. He came to NZ with his lover. They invited me to the Panorama Motel where they stayed. They made reservation for 3 rooms, one was for Carlos and Rachel, another for Richard and his lover the third for Molly and her daughter and Granddaughter, Emi. Molly's room cosisted of 2 smaller rooms. One of them was available to me. Although I arrived there later, they were waiting for me instead of going to bed. They prepared for my dinner, Chicken and Tomato and Rice.
Headline 기사는"Time is out" 이라크전쟁이 시작되고 있다는 뜻이다.
I opened my eyes early in the morning of Feb, 8. The NZ Herald was delievered to the front door of my room. The headline is " Time is out." ,which means the beginning of Iraq War. On the top of right side was the article about North Korea, The article was that Kim Jeong-il of North Korea would try to wage any war of fighting against Bush of America. People in NZ was said to read the articles about Nuke of North Korea. I had breakfast of Serial and Milk, a typical English breakfast. About 2 o'clock in the afternoon we went to Emeral Glen Lodge in Paraparaumu to congratulate Carlos and Rachel on their Wedding. Glen Lodge was an antique styled building with a beautiful garden surrounded by many trees. The beautiful garden grass field and a musician in white were waiting for the congratulators. Toward 4 pm. both family and relatives was getting together there. About 70 to 80 congratulators were on the grass for wedding ceremony. The master of ceremony was located in the middle and the bride and groom, Carlos and Rachel were walking down from the Lodge. Congratulators congratulated them by clapping ther hands. They stood before the MC.
The MC announced their wedding and wished for their everlasting love. The bride and bridegroom promised they would love each other forever. The difference between Korea and NZ is that in Korea, if MC asks a bride and gloom if they will love each other forever, they say, only "Yes, or No." but MC let them say about their own future life, as follow;
When our two souls stand up erect and strong,
Face to face, silent, drawing nigh and nigher,
Until the lengthening wings break into fire.
A place to stand and love in for a day,
With darkness and the death hour rounding it.
I give you my hand!
I give you my love more precious than money,
I give you myself before preaching or law;
Will you give me yourself? Will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?
Rings exchanging The custom of exchanging rings is the same as that of Korea. After the ceremony, congratulators have a pleasant chat on the grass. They never give money for congratulations and donation for the ceremoney. If they are close friends with a newly wedded couple, they give a small gift to them. They had a falkdance in the garden. After that, they had a dinner party in the lodge hall. Beaufully designed name tags for participants were on the table. Of course my name tag was on one of them. I went to the table with my name tage on it and sat down. About 10 people were ready to have food in line. I also followed them. In other words, it was buffet dinner. They didn't hurry to have it. They didn't make a long line any more. Whenr all the people sat on their seat, bride and bridegroom expressed their gratitude to congratulators for coming. Some of his friends read their reminiscences of school days, And people there laughed and shouted at the couple. Feb 8th was Stuart's birthday. Carlos prepared a cake for his birthday
Happy Birth Day to You의 노래로 축하를 받았다.
We congratulated him on his birthday by singing "Happy Birthday to you." Without hurry, Congratulators were participating actively in the dinner party. They kept talking, moving here and there, from this and that seat. Stuart's wife, Teck was one Malayan and I was only one Korean there. Their culture that they brought from England is the one that they live a happy life at ease.
They seemed to get high on a mere glass of wine and whisky. at It was nearly 9 at night. We came back to Levin and went to bed at midnight and got up at about 8 o'clock in the morning. Without breakfast, we left for Taipoa. We went there in company with a newly wedded couple. On the way there, we stopped at Rachel's house where her mother is living. They had already prepared for outdoor barbecue cooking. on the garden. We had them for breakfast and lunch .
Stuart and Teck and I, 그들 모두 렌트카이다.
Rachel's family and her relatives greeted their congratulators with kindness. The entrance area to her house was beautiful and her garden was full of various kind of flowers and trees. About 4:30 we rode the express way of NZ and left for the biggest lake, Taupo Lake, driving toward north and north. We used 4 rent cars . The express highway didn't have median strip. The land is so wide and had so small population that the express high way are not crowded with cars. I didn't see many cars running on it. It is said that as there is no case of invading median line, they didn't have a few car accidents. The car Richard was shooting beams to let me know the location of his car. We could see the highest mountain, the Mount Ruapehu (2796m) under volcanos, As Its top of the mountain was covered wth clouds and snow, so we didn't see its activity of volcanos. About 6, we arrived at Taupo Lake. It was so large that it looked like sea. The water that runs out of the Lake produce electricity, falls an tourist resorts. Carlos already made reservation at a Hotel and a Korean Resaurant
(Rachel and her mother, Carlos and her mother and his sister, Stuart and Teck, Richard and his lover, me)
Long time no taste Korean food. Richard asked me what my Korean favorite food was. I ansered back," Bulgogi" All of us ordered it. The sidedishes was Korean cook such as Kimchee, saullty onions, bin sprout, beanpaste pot stew, etc. The smell of Korean food hallucinated me that here was Korea. The Koean restaurant said to me," We open this restaurant once a day, only in the evening. neither at noon nor in the morning. We can live our life happily only evening." The price of the food for 10 members was expensive, about 300,000 won. But we experienced a Korean food of delicate flavor. Next day we left for the largest resort in NZ, Rotorua. On the way there, we visited Waikato River with a big fall and enjoyed riding a boat.
When our jet boat(huka jet) was was sailing at full speed along the river and turning suddenly, people on the boat felt much thrilled and were shouting, laughing and screaming repeatedly. It was awesome fun. The 360 degree spins, the thundering Huka Falls and the wind in our hair as we jet along the beautiful Waikato River, made this an experience to remember. We enjoyed it very much. We visited the Hidden Valley, which was formed of many caves, with Orakeiko geyser located in Ohakuri Lake, with hot spring water boiling up, with unbelievable beautiful color, and with geysers spring out powerfully, and with great and big Aladins Cave, the beautiy of the nature beyond description isolated from outside world. Under ground, lava moving but on the ground a variety of trees and glasses growing arose my curiosity. Lake Ohakuri is the one that water from the geysers is streaming in, and vapor like fog is rising to the sky from the surface of the lake. The temperature of the water of the lake seemed to be over 30 degrees. It was a good place for swimming. However, As it is the place where lava is in action, it was no swimming place. As I have wished to see lave rising from the earth, it was enough to stimulate my curiosity for this phenomenon.
We left Ohakuri for Rotorua and we arrived at Rotorua toward the sunset. In Korea, it was winter but here in NZ is summer in the opposite to Korea. The hotel that I would stay last in NZ was located in the center of the city. I forgot the name of my hotel unfortunately. The size of my room in the hotel was too large for me alone, so I felt uneasy. The hotel was a two storied building. I could use all the first and second story. The bathroom is in the first story and in the second story was my bedroom. I felt a bit hot in the room. We went to the edge of lake and had a small dinner party talking to each other and looking up at stars in the night sky. The big waves was falling back to the edge of the lake. We enjoyed a last time in NZ. We came back to our hotel at the midnight. We got together in the Stuart's room to say good bye to me because I had to go to Auckland in order to come back to Korea. They were going to stay there for a few days. As it was difficult for us to say a good bye early in the morning, the night was good time for farewell party. I embraced them one by one. We had this kind of human connection.
I stayed at a kind home during my overseas study in 1995. The owner of the homestay was Carlos Corea and his wife Molly, his son, Mr. Carlos. and his daughter, Menthaline. Richard, his friend often used to come to Carlos' house. We made friends there. We have exchaged friendships, letters, and telephones for 8 years. Our friendship has been deeper and deeper. The resort town, Bogner Regis, with a beautiful beach in the sourther part of England ! At the beautiful beach, I spent all night looking at Atlantic Oceran. At time time I was studying at Chichester College belonging to Southsampton University. Carlos Corea was 65 years old and his wife Molly, 63. Carlos Corea came to England when he was a boy and was brought up and grown up and became English people, and he got married with Molly and they gave birth to their children.
Carlos Correa sat up to midnight with me and he criticized for politicians strongly. His accent was philosophic and full of humor. Unfortunatly he had heart disease, so his nurse, Annette and his wife Molly took care of him. Two months's homestay in their home came to bind the relationship between us. 3 months later after I came back to Korea, Carlos Correa's illness grew worse and was dead. I expressed my condolence and regret at his death to his family. Carlos Correa gave me a cassette tape chanson and portuguese falks songs taped on. I also enjoy it now . His son, Carlos loved fell in love with Rachel and they let me know the fact and sent me the invitation card.
I sent mails to them I would participate in their wedding ceremony. At first, I decided that I and my wife would go ther together but mother in law 's death and her school business prevented her from going together.
Next morning I was going out of the hotel without any notice and going to take a bus bound for Auckland, but Carlos got up early to see me off. Teck on the second floor got up early was waving her hands behind the white curtain. I rode the bus at a terminal not far from the hotel. Leaving Rotorua, I again missed them. I left them with beautiful memories in NZ and their unforgetable kindness. I arrived at Auckland at about 11 am. I had enough time to take an airplane to Korea. So I looked around downtown in the city. I bought some books at a big book store. The street was crowded with people like Seoul. I walked around some famous areas. I gott to Auckland airport to check in about 2 or 3 hours earlier. I tried to telephone my family, but in vain.
The moment I came out of the Telephone Box, I found out someone's purse with much dollars and cards in it was on the shelf of the Box. I picked it up and gave it to an airport officer(loss center). They didn't ask me where you had found it , what my name was. He said to me, " Thank you." I thought that it was the difference of culture between Korea and NZ. I checked in and boarded about 8 : 40. My plane was flying over to Korea through night sky. The screen monitor in frot of my seat showed the air route of my plane. There were many passengers of other countries via the Incheon International Airport. A Chinese passenger beside me criticized that North Korea Nuke Issue is foolish thing. I arrived at Incheon International Airport at about 6. a.m. I went to transfer to Buasan Kimhae Airport. I arrived at Kim Hae Airport at 8 in the morning.
