오늘은 아침부터 특별한 일이 있었습니다. 임흥세 감독님의 동역자인 Holyland Church의 Wajo 목사님이 며칠 전 연락을 주셨습니다. 매주 주일 아침 8시~9시에 라디오에서 말씀을 전하는 시간을 갖는데, 이번주에는 감독님과 저를 초청해서 그간의 사역 이야기를 듣고 싶다는 내용이었습니다. TV 방송과 신문에 나오더니 이번에는 라디오 생방송까지 출연하게 되었습니다.

사실 당일 아침까지 약속이 불분명해서 준비를 제대로 못 하고 있다가 오늘 새벽에 급하게 출연이 성사되어 30분 정도만에 스크립트를 준비하였습니다. 그간 써둔 글을 토대로 챗지피티, 제미나이의 도움을 받아 초안 작성, 퇴고, 번역을 거친 뒤 검토할 틈도 없이 바로 방송에 들어갔습니다. 라디오 생방송은 태어나 처음이었고, 그것도 영어로 10분 가량을 떠드려니 긴장도 되었지만 워낙 해야할 이야기가 많다보니 시간이 금방 흘렀습니다.

허름한 러다오 방송국에 도착해 긴장을 풀 여유도 없이 곧장 스튜디오에 들어가 마이크 앞에 앉았습니다. 카메라를 설치하고 있는데 방송은 바로 시작되었고, 바로 숨을 가다듬고 이야기를 시작했습니다. 아랍어로 번역이 되는 것도 시작이 되어서야 알게 되어 방송을 진행하면서 번역이 어렵지 않도록 즉흥적으로 단어를 수정해가며 방송을 진행했습니다. 그렇게 번역을 포함해 20분간 발언을 무사히 마치고, 이후에 청취자 사연접수, 음악 감상 시간을 거쳐 한 번 더 인사를 전한 뒤 1시간 방송이 끝이 났습니다.

남수단에서 참 놀라운 일들이 많이 일어납니다. 계획하지도 예상하지도 못했던 방향으로 흘러가는 매일이 기적처럼 느껴집니다. 집에 돌아와 감독님과 '단둘예배'를 드리며 오늘 우리에게 주신 하나님의 은혜를 나누며 감동 받는 시간을 가졌습니다. 그저 남은 시간도 주신 사명 잘 붙잡고 열심을 다하는 시간이 되면 좋겠습니다.

방송에서 나눈 내용을 공유합니다

안녕하십니까, 청취자 여러분.

제 이름은 선진입니다. 저는 한국에서 온 봉사자 입니다. 원래는 1달 계획을 세우고 와서 어제 떠나는 계획이었는데, 이곳에 와보니 할 일이 많아 제 체류를 1달 연장하였습니다. 이렇게 여러분에게 인사드릴 수 있게 되어서 반갑습니다.

이곳에서 저는 많은 일을 하고 있습니다. 나환자 보건소를 비롯한 병원들에 방문하여 주님의 사랑을, 많은 학교와 교회들을 방문해 희망의 메시지를 전하고 있습니다.

그리고 현지에 체류 중인 선교사님을 보필하며 NGO 및 정부 기관과의 협력과 대화 시 통역과 행정 업무를 지원하는 역할을 주로 수행하고 있습니다.

남수단에서의 시간은 매일이 기적입니다. 매순간 신비롭게 이끄시는 그분의 놀라운 계획을 신뢰하며 순종할 때 일어나는 일들을 매일같이 체험하고 있습니다.

Korea Civil Mission 소개

남수단에서의 여정 중 가장 큰 감동은, 이곳에서 15년간 헌신하신 임흥세 감독님과 김기춘 한인회장님 두 분이 쌓아 올리신 사역의 발자취입니다.

Korea Civil Mission은 남수단 독립 이전 톤즈 지역에서 선교사역을 하셨던 FR. DR. JOHN LEE 이태석 신부님의 뜻을 이어 지난 15년간 나환자들, 장애인들을 비롯해 남수단에서도 가장 어려운 사람들을 돕는 사역을 했습니다. 수많은 물자와 자금을 지원하며 남수단 곳곳에 사랑을 전했습니다.

특히 임흥세 감독님은 남수단 스포츠 역사의 산증인입니다. 임 감독님은 한국에서 청소년 축구 코치로 활동하며 지금의 한국 남녀 축구 국가대표팀 감독을 포함한 많은 인재를 육성했고, 이후 남아공에서 에이즈 환자, 재소자 등 소외된 이들을 위한 축구팀을 만들어 사회 통합을 이끌었습니다.

이후 더 어려운 나라를 섬기고자 남수단 톤즈에 와서 1년간 축구를 가르치며 그곳에서 희망의 메시지를 전했고, 남수단 국가대표팀 총감독을 맡아 축구 시스템의 토대를 마련했습니다. U-12, U-15 대표팀 선수단은 한국에서 열린 국제 대회에 참가하여 한국 대통령을 만나는 등 외교적인 성과도 만들었습니다. 최근에는 한국 기업 '훌랄라 치킨'의 후원을 유치하여 KONYO-KONYO 시장 근처에서 유소년 축구 아카데미를 성공적으로 운영하셨습니다.

무엇보다 최근 장애인 스포츠 분야에서 혁혁한 공을 세우셨습니다. 이전에 남수단 올림픽위원회 창설에 기여하며 남수단이 올림픽에 참가할 수 있도록 만드셨고, 현재 남수단 패럴림픽위원회 명예회장으로서 남수단 장애인 스포츠가 국제 무대로 진출하는 결정적인 토대를 만들었습니다.

임 감독님께서는 이제 모든 역량을 시각장애인 축구대표팀 등 장애인 스포츠의 발전과 국제 진출에 쏟으실 계획입니다. 저희는 국제 NGO인 'Light for the World'와 파트너십을 맺고, 이 시각장애인 축구대표팀이 2028년 미국 LA 패럴림픽에 참가할 수 있도록 체계적인 지원을 목표로 삼고 있습니다.

이는 단순한 스포츠 대회를 넘어, 남수단 국민들에게 희망의 메시지를 전하고 사회 통합을 촉진할 역사적 전환점이 될 것입니다. 특히, 지난 15년간 남수단의 소외된 이웃을 도우며 헌신해 온 김기춘 회장님께서도 이번 장애인 스포츠 협력의 중요성에 깊이 공감하며 적극적인 지지를 약속해 주셨습니다.

두 분 어른이 닦아 놓으신 이 놀라운 길 위에서, 저 또한 이 희망의 씨앗을 뿌리는 일에 동참하게 되어 감사할 따름입니다.

향후 계획

저는 이왕 남수단에 발을 들인 것, 할 수 있는 최선을 다하고 멋진 결과물을 만들고 떠나고 싶어 체류를 연장했습니다.

신생국가 남수단은 여전히 전쟁과 정치 불안정으로 많은 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 하지만 저는 이 땅에서 희망을 발견합니다. 폭발적인 에너지와 무한한 잠재력을 가진 이 나라에는 고통 속에서도 꿈을 꾸는 사람들이 있고, 똑똑하게 미래를 그려나가는 젊은이들이 있습니다. 원조를 받던 나라에서 주는 나라로 성장한 한국의 이야기는 이들에게 가장 좋은 길을 제시합니다. 남은 시간 동안 저는 이 희망의 메시지를 열심히 전하겠습니다.

이 모든 사역을 통해 오직 하나님의 사랑과 선하심만이 이 땅에 전해질 수 있도록 잠깐 기도해주시면 고맙겠습니다.

아래 성경 구절은 이태석 신부님이 가장 좋아하던 말씀입니다.

"내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라 (마 25:40)"

이 말씀처럼 지극히 작은자에게 그리스도의 사랑이 전해지기를 바랍니다.

My name is Seonjin, and I am a volunteer from South Korea. I originally planned to stay for one month and leave yesterday, but once I arrived here, I realized there was still much work to be done. So I decided to extend my stay for another month. I am truly glad to greet you today.

Here in South Sudan, I am involved in many different activities. I visit hospitals, including clinics that care for people affected by leprosy, to share the love of the Lord. I also visit many schools and churches to deliver messages of hope.

In addition, I assist the missionary who is serving here by supporting interpretation and administrative work during meetings and collaborations with NGOs and government institutions.

Since arriving in South Sudan, every day has been a miracle. I witness, day after day, the amazing things that happen when we trust and obey His mysterious guidance.

Introduction to Korea Civil Mission

One of the most moving parts of my journey here has been seeing the legacy of two people who have devoted themselves to this land for the past 15 years: Coach Hung-se Lim and Mr. Ki-choon Kim, the President of the Korea Civil Mission in South Sudan.

Korea Civil Mission has continued the spirit of Father Dr. John Lee Tae-seok, who served in Tonj before South Sudan’s independence. For the past 15 years, the organization has supported leprosy patients, people with disabilities, and the most vulnerable communities across South Sudan, providing essential supplies, financial resources, and unwavering love.

Coach Hung-se Lim is a living witness to South Sudan’s sports history. He previously coached youth football teams in Korea, mentoring many talented players—including those who now Head coach the national men’s and women’s teams of Korea. Later, in South Africa, he formed football teams for people who were marginalized, such as AIDS patients and prisoners, using sports as a tool for social integration.

Seeking to serve in an even more challenging place, he came to Tonj, South Sudan, where he spent a year teaching football and sharing a message of hope. He later became the head coach of the South Sudan national football team, laying the foundation for the country’s football system.

The U-12 and U-15 teams even traveled to Korea for international tournaments, creating meaningful diplomatic achievements, including meeting the Korean president. More recently, he secured sponsorship from Korean companies such as 'Hoolala Chicken' and successfully operated a youth football academy near the Konyo-Konyo market.

Most notably, he has made groundbreaking contributions in the field of disability sports. Having helped establish the South Sudan Olympic Committee in the past, he made it possible for the country to participate in the Olympics. Today, as the Honorary Chair of the South Sudan Paralympic Committee, he is laying the groundwork for athletes with disabilities to step onto the international stage.

Coach Lim now plans to dedicate all his efforts to developing disability sports—especially the blind football national team. Together with the international NGO “Light for the World,” we aim to support the blind football team so that it can participate in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

This project is more than just sports. It is a historic turning point that will bring hope to the people of South Sudan and promote social inclusion. Mr. Ki-choon Kim, who has devoted the last 15 years to serving the most vulnerable communities, also strongly supports this initiative.

Walking on the extraordinary path these two leaders have prepared, I am deeply grateful to take part in planting seeds of hope.

Future Plans

Since I have set foot in South Sudan, I want to do my very best and leave behind meaningful results, which is why I extended my stay.

South Sudan, as a young nation, continues to face many challenges due to conflict and political instability. Yet I see hope here. This country, filled with explosive energy and limitless potential, is home to people who dream even in the midst of suffering, and to young people who are boldly shaping their future. Korea’s own story—of rising from receiving aid to becoming a country that gives—offers them a powerful example.

In the time I have left, I will continue to share this message of hope with all my heart.

I ask for your prayers so that through all these efforts, only God’s love and goodness may be delivered to this land.

I would like to close with a Bible verse loved by Father John Lee Tae-seok:

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

May the love of Christ be shared with even to the least among us.
