Title: The Philosophy of Star Hyung (별형) of the Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu
Preface
The contents presented here are planned to be introduced to Dan practitioners during the 2026 Netherlands Seminar.
Although the concept of Star Type has occasionally been explained in previous seminars, this time I would like to provide a more complete understanding through both illustrations and written explanations.
Once the Star Type is truly understood, one begins to realize that its purpose is far greater than simply learning how to use a sword.
It becomes a practice of understanding space, discovering the center, and realizing the true nature of movement.
Within the philosophy of Kimu, this idea may be summarized in a single sentence:
«"Star Type is not a practice of learning the trajectory of the sword.
It is a practice of embodying the natural cycle—beginning from the center and ultimately returning to the center."»
The Star Type should not be understood merely as a two-dimensional pattern.
Its true structure exists in three-dimensional space.
The six outer stations and the central axis together form a living structure, through which the practitioner experiences balance, direction, depth, and consciousness.
In this sense, the seven stations may also be viewed as symbolic of the Seven Stars of the Big Dipper.
Just as the Big Dipper has long served as a guide for travelers, these seven stations guide the practitioner through an inner journey toward harmony with the order of nature and the universe.
STAR TYPE (별형)
A Three-Dimensional Path of Consciousness
«"A star is not merely a shape.
It is the path of consciousness reaching toward the universe."»
A star is not simply a geometric shape.
It symbolizes the path through which human consciousness expands toward the universe.
The Seven Stations of Consciousness
S & 7 — Origin (Starting Point)
Every journey begins here.
This is not merely a starting position.
It is the place where the practitioner calms the breath, establishes the center, and gathers the mind into one.
At the end of each cycle, this same point becomes the Origin from which a new journey begins.
① First Star
The practitioner arrives at the first star.
Here, specific sword movements are practiced to harmonize the body, breath, and awareness.
A new journey begins.
② Second Star
The movement continues toward another star.
This is not simply changing location.
It is entering another world of practice.
Each station offers a different movement, a different rhythm, and a different state of consciousness.
③ Third Star
Another star...
Another perspective.
The practitioner experiences a new direction of energy and expands awareness through movement.
④ Fourth Star
The fourth star presents yet another dimension of practice.
No station repeats the previous one.
Each star represents its own movement, its own energy, and its own consciousness.
The practitioner is not repeating techniques—
he or she is traveling through different dimensions of experience.
⑤ Fifth Star
Having completed the outer journey,
the practitioner prepares to return toward the central axis.
This is the transition from expansion back to integration.
⑥ Axis (Central Axis)
The sixth station should not be understood as a point on a flat diagram.
It is the central axis of the entire structure.
Although it appears between Stations 3 and 4 in a two-dimensional drawing,
its true position exists along the depth of space.
It connects heaven and earth,
movement and stillness,
body and consciousness.
Here, every direction returns to one center.
⑦ Origin
The journey finally returns to the Origin.
Yet this is not a return to the same place.
The body has changed.
The breath has changed.
Consciousness has changed.
What appears to be the end of one cycle
is actually the beginning of another.
The practitioner returns not as the same person,
but with a deeper understanding of the natural order.
The Philosophy of Star Type
Star Type is not simply a sword pattern that draws the shape of a star.
Each star represents a world,
a sacred space,
and a Station of Consciousness.
The practitioner travels from one station to another,
refining the body,
deepening the breath,
and expanding awareness.
All experiences finally gather at the central axis,
before beginning another cycle.
Not a Flat Pattern, but a Three-Dimensional Path
The Star Type cannot be fully understood as a two-dimensional diagram.
Its true structure exists in three-dimensional space.
The outer stars express the order of the universe,
while the central axis connects heaven and earth,
body and consciousness,
the human being and the cosmos.
---
«As above, so below.»
The order of heaven is reflected upon the earth.
The movement of the universe is expressed through the trajectory of the sword.
The trajectory of the sword is then engraved into the practitioner's consciousness.
Ultimately, Star Type is a practice of learning the order of the universe through movement,
and planting that universal order within one's own consciousness.
