Minnesota Twins: Outfielder Shannon Stewart was placed on the 15-day disabled list after he missed his third straight game with a right foot injury.

"You have to make sure you take care of it now or we can make it last all the rest of the summer," manager Ron Gardenhire said after the Twins lost 10-3 to the White Sox.

The move was made retroactive to May 18. Minnesota also recalled first baseman Justin Morneau from Triple-A Rochester. Stewart has a strained plantar fascia. He did some throwing during batting practice but can't run without pain.

"It gets frustrating, the fact that I have to sit out," Stewart said. "I felt I was swinging the bat the way I wanted to be swinging it."

Meanwhile, Joe Mauer was scheduled to catch in a simulated game with the Twins' extended spring training team. Mauer has been on the disabled list since April 5 while recovering from left knee surgery. On Wednesday, he went 3-for-7 with five RBI as the designated hitter in a doubleheader.

Texas Rangers: Rookie catcher Gerald Laird tore a ligament in his left hand on a tag play in the first inning against the Royals.

Laird will have an MRI on Friday morning to determine the extent of the damage. Rangers manager Buck Showalter estimated Laird would be out for about three months if the ligament is torn.

"This is a real sobering part of the game," Showalter said. "It breaks your heart. Hopefully he'll be back."

Laird, who began the night leading AL rookies in hits (27), runs (14), batting average (.307) and on-base percentage (.374), was injured while tagging Ken Harvey for the third out of the inning. Laird said his glove hand was crushed by Harvey's shin when the players made contact on Harvey's slide to the plate.

"I'm going to get it fixed and be ready when I come back," Laird said. "I'm going to stay in shape."

Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister said he'll wait until Friday before making a definitive diagnosis.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Shortstop Jack Wilson sat out Thursday's game against the Padres with a sore left knee, a day after playing both games of a doubleheader.

Wilson felt a twinge in his knee while leaning over to pick up one of his son's toys Thursday morning, but thought he would feel better once he stretched the knee out. When the knee didn't respond after he arrived at the ballpark, he had an MRI as a precaution, but said doctors found nothing wrong.

"There's just a lot of tightness in there," Wilson said following Pittsburgh's 9-7 victory over San Diego.

Wilson, who had started 36 of Pittsburgh's last 37 games, is batting .344 with four homers and 15 RBI.

Colorado Rockies: Right-hander Scott Elarton was placed on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. He's expected to clear waivers by Monday and become a free agent.

Elarton, 28, was 0-6 with a 9.80 ERA in eight starts for Colorado before the Rockies designated him for assignment Sunday.

He's 36-33 in a combined six seasons with Houston and Colorado, including 4-10 since missing the entire 2002 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder.

Anderson, on the disabled list since April 22, will take medication and begin light workouts in a pool to start his rehabilitation. There is no timetable for his return to the lineup.

The 31-year-old outfielder, an All-Star the past two years and the game's MVP last season, hit .339 with two homers and five RBIs in 15 games last month before stiffness and pain forced him onto the DL for the first time in his career.

He has undergone many tests to try to determine the cause of the ailment.

"It's encouraging to get a hard diagnosis, something firm that can lead to a course of action that will help Garret get better," Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said after Wednesday night's 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees.

"I think it's giving him a little peace of mind that there's something the medical staff can do to get him feeling better."

Asked if he expected Anderson to play again this season, Scioscia said, "Absolutely."

On April 13, Anderson, a career .300 hitter, signed a four-year, $48 million contract extension through 2008. The deal includes a team option for 2009 with a $3 million buyout.

Anaheim's Darin Erstad (hamstring) and Tim Salmon (knee) also are on the DL, and Troy Glaus is scheduled to have shoulder surgery on Friday.

Atlanta Braves: The leader of a group that wants to buy the team said Time Warner Inc. is not willing to discuss the offer.

"We're obviously disappointed. We would have liked to have done something," Charles Vaughn said Thursday, a day after receiving word from Time Warner. "We consider the matter closed for now."

When AOL Time Warner's sale of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks and NHL's Atlanta Thrashers was announced last Sept. 16, Turner Broadcasting vice chairman Terry McGuirk said there no longer was "an ongoing marketing plan to sell" the Braves. McGuirk now is chairman and president of the team.

Vaughn said he was notified of the Time Warner decision by Turner executive vice president Jim McCaffrey, who represented the company in the sale of the Hawks and Thrashers.
