새 시즌 시작 불과 2주일을 남겨 놓고 퍼거슨은 지난 시즌 프리미어와 챔스우승을 했다고 나태한 자세를 보이는 선수가 발견되면 쫓아낼 것이라고 하면서 연례행사격으로 주의를 주었다.

그가 말했다.
" 우승을 머리에 담아놓고 노력하지 않고 성공에 안주하려는 기색을 보이는 이들은 곧 자기 갈 길을 가게 될 겁니다. "

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his Manchester United double winners: lose the hunger and you’re out.

With the new campaign only a fortnight away, Ferguson has issued his annual reminder that if he detects any player taking it easy after last season’s Premier and Champions League triumphs, he will sack them.

He said: “If success has gone to anyone’s head and they show signs that they are ready to rest on their laurels, they will soon be on their way. 

“I will look into the eyes of my players to make sure they have retained the hunger they need to succeed. Then we will look forward. 

“If I don’t see the appetite and ambition, then the bus moves on without anyone who has lost the spark.” United make their first appearance of the pre-season at Old Trafford today in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s testimonial game against Espanyol.

And Ferguson admitted his squad will have to improve if they are to complete a hat-trick of domestic title wins and become the first team since AC Milan in 1990 to win back-to-back European Cups. “We cannot afford to slacken,” he added. “The Premier League has never been so competitive and it is difficult to defend the Champions League.

“We have a group of players good enough to do it and we have the right back-up in terms of a strong squad.” 

Ferguson, writing in United’s official 2008 yearbook, said the fact he never allowed himself to “get carried away” by success, and is always looking forwards, had helped sustain his incredible longevity – this will be his 23rd season as Old Trafford boss.

 

And he warned his Premier League rivals that although he has admitted he has only two or three years left, his foot will not come off the pedal.

“I have not finished yet,” he said. “I still have some damage to do before I retire.”

With Solskjaer now taking his first steps towards management after being appointed reserve team coach, Ferguson fears for the future of any young boss.

He said: “The way the game is now you can lose six games and lose your job, which tells you all about the knee-jerk reaction in football.”

Gary Neville’s comeback after an 18-month lay-off has been hit by a calf strain that will keep him out of today’s game. But he should be fit to face Juventus in midweek.
