SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday lambasted a far-right civic group for demanding the removal of statues of a girl representing victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery, calling it an "absurd" case of defamation of the deceased.

Lee made the remarks on X, formerly Twitter, as he posted a news article reporting that police have launched an investigation into the head of the group for allegedly insulting such statues nationwide.

"This is an absurd case of defamation of the deceased," Lee wrote.
According to the news report, the activist group held multiple protest rallies in front of such statues across the nation, calling for their removal and disparaging the victims.

Historians estimate that up to 200,000 women, mostly from Korea, were forced to work in front-line brothels for Japanese soldiers during the war. Korea was a Japanese colony from 1910-45.

(서울=연합뉴스) 황윤기 기자 = 일본군 위안부 피해자를 성매매 여성으로 비난하며 소녀상 철거를 요구하는 시위에 대해 이재명 대통령이 6일 "얼빠진 사자명예훼손"이라고 강하게 비판했다.

이 대통령은 이날 엑스(X·옛 트위터)에 인터넷 기사 링크를 공유하며 이같이 썼다.

해당 기사에는 극우 성향 시민단체 '위안부법폐지국민행동' 김병헌 대표 등이 경찰에 입건돼 수사 중이라는 내용이 담겼다.

김 대표는 전국에 설치된 소녀상 인근에서 철거를 요구하며 여러 차례 시위를 벌여왔다.

이 과정에서 위안부와 관련된 역사적 사실을 부정하고 '성매매 여성'으로 매도하거나 소녀상에 '철거'라는 문구가 쓰인 마스크를 씌우는 등 혐오적 행동으로 비판받았다.
