Dear Professor Chomsky,
I hope that this message finds you well.
Courageous Korean railway workers have been on a strike against privatization of railways for the past 2 weeks. The Korean government’
response has been extremely harsh.
On December 22, 2013, Korean government dispatched more than 5000 police to arrest two union leaders of Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (scenes of destruction after the police raid: http://news.khan.co.kr/kh_news/khan_art_view.html?artid= 201312231130301&code=940100). Obviously, the government intended to terrorize the workers.
In response to the excessive usage of force by the state, a historic general workers’
first since 1997—is scheduled on December 28. (REUTERS. South Korean union vows all-out strike in sympathy with rail workers http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/23/us-korea-labour-idUSBRE9BM07H20131223)
I am wondering if you'd be willing to send me your brief statement of solidarity in support of Korean workers and the general strike. It would help raise media and public attention to the strike.
"The government's act of raiding the office of KCTU, the symbol and the heart of the democratic trade union movement, is tantamount to an attempt to annihilate the labor movement and create a dictatorship to trample down the just demands of workers.”
chairman of the KCTU
"The government's raid of the KCTU office and oppression of rail workers is a declaration of war against all of the nation's workers and democratic unions”-- Kim Gyeong-ja, deputy head of the union
My sincere apologies for this short-notice. I thank you very much for your help.
I wish you a happy holiday season and the New Year!
Sincerely,
simone
