Lao PDR Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) visited schools

Last week senior managers from the Lao PDR Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) visited schools in Kampong Cham province, Cambodia to gain insights from the ASEAN-UK SAGE Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) project that has been running there since March 2025.

The MoES delegation learnt how TaRL has been helping Grade 4 and 5 students, who are at risk of dropping out, to develop the basic literacy and numeracy skills they need to catch up and stay in school. By going to the field, the delegation was able to see the teachers and students in action and also meet the TaRL mentors and district and provincial education authorities. This helps them to better understand the governance and support structures that underpin a successful TaRL intervention, as well as how it is implemented in the classroom.

A similar project is being developed in Lao PDR for out of school children in Savannakhet Province, delivered by Pratham International, supported by ASEAN-UK SAGE.

So far, the TaRL project in Cambodia has shown extremely positive results, with the number of students reading at paragraph level and up increasing from 40% in the baseline assessment to 65% in the midline assessment. The results are even more impressive with mathematics, with the number of students at the subtraction level and up increasing from approximately 43% in the baseline assessment to 93% in the midline assessment.

MoES 대표단은 자퇴 위기에 처한 초등학교 4학년과 5학년 학생들이 따라잡고 학교에 머무는 데 필요한 기본 문해력과 수리 능력을 개발할 수 있도록 TaRL이 어떻게 도움을 주고 있는지 배웠습니다. 대표단은 현장에 나가면서 교사와 학생들이 실제로 활동하는 모습을 볼 수 있었고, TaRL 멘토와 구 및 도 교육 당국도 만날 수 있었습니다. 이를 통해 성공적인 TaRL 개입을 뒷받침하는 거버넌스와 지원 구조, 그리고 이를 교실에서 어떻게 구현하는지 더 잘 이해할 수 있습니다.
유사한 프로젝트가 라오스 PDR에서 사바나켓 주의 학교 밖 어린이들을 위해 개발되고 있으며, 이 프로젝트는 프라탐 인터내셔널이 ASEAN-UK SAGE의 지원을 받아 진행하고 있습니다.
지금까지 캄보디아의 TaRL 프로젝트는 기초 평가에서 단락 수준 이상의 읽기 학생 수가 40%에서 중간 평가에서 65%로 증가하는 등 매우 긍정적인 결과를 보여주었습니다. 수학에서는 뺄셈 수준 이상의 학생 수가 기초 평가에서 약 43%에서 중간 평가에서 93%로 증가하는 등 결과가 더욱 인상적입니다.
