7. Di Shui Shi( The Army / The Troops).
◎ Shi(The Army) reveals strategies on how an experienced veteran―such as a teacher,
general, military leader, team manager, manager, leader, or CEO― can act on the field
to minimize bloodshed and secure victory and benefit.
▣ Shi(The Army) : Correctness and an experienced leader bring no blame.
[Explanation]
Since this concerns military affairs, only a seasoned and experienced leader
will bring good fortune and be free from fault.
[Commentary]
The Shi Hexagram represents a situation where the lives of five Yin lines depend
entirely on [Nine in the Second Position], their sole hope and general.
The group of weak Yin lines represents the masses, and the soldiers ;
the one who leads and commands them is the teacher and the military commander.
In the Rites of Zhou, 'Shi' refers to generals and thachers who occupy positions
of command over gathered disciples and subordinates, or to armies,
military discipline, and military law.
Meanwhile, under the military system of the Zhou Dynasty,
a force of 500 men was called a Lu, and 2,500 men was called a Shi.
Hence, Shi signifies a crowd(multitude) and is considered a position
that induces anxiety and conecern.
The following is a quote by Cheng Yi :
"In the bi Hexagram(水地比卦,수지비괘 - Water over Earth), [Nine in the Fifth Positio] sits above,
representing the image of a sovereign; in the Shi Hexagram(地水師卦,지수사괘 - Earth over Water),
[Nine in the Second Position] lies below, representing the image of a general.
Viewing the Shi Hexagram through its symbolic image,
As the Yang line of [Nine in the Second Position] resides in the center of the inner trigram
and leads five Yin lines, it becomes the leader of many.
Therefore, Shi(The Army) refers to military affairs, methods of employing troops in war,
and a trained organized multitude.
The following is the text of the Hexagram Decision(Tuan) :
"Shi(The Army) concerns military commanders who lead armies ; only an experienced
general with seasoned wisdom―a true master among professionals―will bring good fortune
and be free from fault [Shi Zhen Zhang Ren Wu Jiu]."
War and the military are synonymous with the nation itself.
A general leading an army bears an immense responsibility;
if an inexperienced commander with little knowledge of deployment andbattle leads the troops,
neither the lives of soldiers nor the security of the nation can be guaranteed.
Hence, it is unacceptable unless led by a seasoned commander.
Dongpo ststed, "A Zhangren (丈人,장인 - Master / Leader) is one skilled in affairs
and possess high virtue, and added, "Only a true master can merit leading the masses rightly
while preventing future calamities."
It becomes easier to understand by reading Confucius's detailed commentary in the following
'Tuan Zhuan'(彖曰,단왈 - Commentary on the Decision) :
"An army refers to a great multitude [師衆也,사중야 - Shi Zhong Ye],
and the commander-in-chief who leads that multitude to the battlefield must hold
no self-interest [貞正也,정정야 - Zhen Zheng Ye].
Therefore, a military leader guiding a vast army must strictly maintain rectitude through
military law [能以衆正,능이중정 - Neng Yi Zhong Zheng],
in order to uphold the Royal Way [可以王矣,가이왕의 - Ke Yi Wang Yi].
Because the strong general of the second line shares central strenght and responds
with liyalty to the gentle sovereign at the fifth line [剛中而應,강중이응 - Gang Zhong Er Ying],
they fight risking their life even on the most dangerous battkefields
Xing Xian Er Shun]."
When one's virtue attains Central Rectitude, the entire world aligns with them.
However, when loyalty to the monarch and trust in subjects conflict,
friction is inevitably exposed.
Yi Seong-gye of late Goryeo and Yi Sun-sin of Joseon are prime examples,
While Han Xin of the Han Dynasty and Xiang Yu /Liu Bang's 'hunting dog killed once
the hare is caught(兎死狗烹,토사구팽 - Tosagupaeng) serves as a representative case.
Yi Seong-gye of Goryeo turned back his army from the Liaodong expedition
and dethroned the monarch.
While Yi Sun-sin of Joseon, despite winning battles, suffered the humiliation of being
demoted to a common soldier due to political machinations,
yet he did not overthrow the royal court.
Instead, he possessed the wisdom to protect the nation without foolishly surviving
to the very end only to suffer "being disposed of once the goal is met"(Tosagupaeng).
In his final battlefield at the Battle of Noryang,
Yi Sun-sin sought death and chose a glorious demise;
as a result, he was able to remain as a 'Sacred Hero'(聖雄,성웅 - Seong-ung),
far greater than King Seonjoand remembered longer than the Joseon Dynasty itself.
Even when lives were cast away like straw in the midst of such war,
the people willingly followed without regretting their lives
how could this possibly be called a fault or blame
Are the people, who willingly drink that 'poison (毒,독 -Dok)' spoken of by Confucius,
truly the masters of the nation,
or are they merely mercenaries discarded for a single arrow or a single bullet?
