조미영 작가가 대사관의 초청을 받아 12월9일부터 12월15일까지 사우디 수도 리야드 Ahlam Gallery에서 ‘오아시스/ 민화: 한국의 영혼을 리야드에서 만나다 OASIS/ MINHWA: The Soul of Korea’ 특별전을 연다.
이번 특별전은 아름다운 한국 민화를 사우디 국민들에게 소개하기 위해 준비되었다. 사우디 사람들에게 이미 친숙한 K-POP, K-DRAMA 외에도 한국의 아름다운 민화 작품을 조미영 작가 전시회를 통해 사우디 국민들에게 소개하고 한국의 매력을 알리는 계기가 될 것이다.

작년 한-사우디 수교 60주년과 올해 대통령의 사우디 국빈방문이 있었던 만큼, 한국과 사우디는 오랜 역사를 함께해온 우정이 깊은 나라이며 근래 한국 문화와 컨텐츠에 지대한 관심을 보이고 있다. 이번 전시는 조미영 작가의 회화 중에서 한국과 한국인의 마음을 누구나 편하게 접할 수 있도록 민화를 선보이게 되었고, 이것은 사우디 사람들에게 한국인의 영혼과 멋을 직접 만나 우리 문화의 이해와 더불어 예술 교류의 초석을 다지는 뜻깊은 행사가 될 것이다. 전시 제목 ‘오아시스’가 말하듯이 사막에서 긴 여행에 지친이들이 안식처를 찾는 것처럼 회화를 통하여 마음의 평온을 얻고 소박하지만 진정한 소통을 할 수 있는 한국화의 묘미를 발견할 것으로 기대된다.

“인간의 삶 속에서 자연만큼 치유력이 있는 것이 있을까?”
한국화를 전공한 나는 옛 한국화 전통 ‘민화’에서 이러한 질문에 대한 해답을 찾고자 하였다. 전통 회화와 현대 한국화 사이에서 공통된 예술의 힘은 ‘자연치유’라는 믿음이 있다. 민화는 이어지는 삶에 관한 소망들과 가족의 건강과 복을 기원하고, 나에게 닥칠 액운을 막는 일, 인생의 덕담과 훈계, 때로는 일상을 벗어나 여행을 대신하기도 했다. 또한, 사랑ㆍ열정ㆍ건강ㆍ치유ㆍ회복 등 다양한 주제로 마음의 평화를 갖도록 자연을 그려내고, 삶의 풍경을 담았기 때문에 오랜 기간 우리의 삶 속 가까이에서 그 궤적을 같이 하였다.
나는 깃〔羽〕을 주제로 전통적인 바탕 재료 위에 가는 선묘로 깃을 그려 정제시키는 과정을 표현한다. 미묘한 압력의 차이나 흐름에 의한 공기 사이를 자유롭게 날아가는 ‘깃털’에서 생명의 본질을 찾고 있으며, 한국화의 전통 방법을 바탕으로 자연 친화적인 전통 재료의 질료적 특성을 활용하여 유동적인 변화ㆍ번짐의 ‘물 드로잉’으로 한국의 자연을 담고자 한다.
이번 작품들은 전통적인 민화의 요소 위에 기존 깃 시리즈의 현대적 요소를 함께 담았다. 민화는 한국인의 삶 속 꿈을 담은 영혼의 메시지이다. 소박하고 자연스러우며, 애환과 해학이 함께 공존한다. 이러한 민화적 힘이 오아시스로 널리 널리 이어지길, 모든 이에게 휴식 안식처가 되길 바라며...

홍익대학교 동양화과와 동대학원을 졸업, 박사를 수료한 조미영은 덕원갤러리(1999), 김옥길기념관(2003), 한전프라자갤러리(2005), 게이트갤러리(2008), 갤러리나비(2010), 그림집(2011), 인사아트센터(2013), 홍익대현대미술관HOMA(2015), 스페이스선+(2016), 남산갤러리(2017), 팔레 드 서울(2018), 연희동미술관(2022) 등 열아홉 번의 개인전과 다수의 기획전 그룹전을 가졌다. 작가는 전통 바탕 재료 위에 가는 선묘로 깃羽을 그려 정제 시키는 과정을 갖는다. 그가 말하고자 혹은 표현하고자 하는 것에서의 본질을 끌어내어 가장 간소하게 절제하는 표현들을 선으로 그려나간다. 그의 작업은 미묘한 압력의 차이나 흐름에 의한 공기 사이를 자유롭게 날아가는 '깃털'에서 생명의 본질을 찾고 있다. 깃털, 알과 같이 조미영화 된 소재를 결합시켜 뛰어난 색채감과 공간감 등의 구성으로 평면 위에 의식의 서사 구조를 만들어 낸다. 국립박물관 그리고 대학에서 한국화 전통 실기 수업을 통해 민화를 널리 알리고 있다.

Artist CHO, MI YOUNG
After graduating from Hongik University with BFA, MFA and completion of Ph.D in Korean Painting, Mi Young Cho has held 19 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions. In her works, the artist takes on the process of refinement with Korean traditional material. She draws out the essence of what she is trying to say or express and brings out the utmost expression‎ of refinement and exquisiteness through lines. The artist searches for the nature of life through painting ‘feathers’ that fly freely between the air, which is created by subtle difference in pressure or flow. Using feathers or eggs, subjects that have become synonymous with Mi Young Cho, the artist fuses together such symbolism to make a description of conscious thoughts about life through the construction of outstanding colors and spatial sense. She is currently teaching korean traditional painting at Hongik University Institute of Fine Arts and Design Education and National Museum of Korea.

The Charm of Korean Painting Becomes the Center of Saudi Arabian Culture.

Artist Miyoung Cho holds a special exhibition in Riyadh, the capital, at the invitation of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Saudi Arabia.
 
Artist Cho, Mi-young is invited by the Korean Embassy to hold a special exhibition ‘OASIS/MINHWA: The Soul of Korea’ at the Ahlam Gallery in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, from December 9th to December 15th.
This exhibition aims to introduce the beauty of Korean folk paintings to the Saudi people. The exhibition will present Korean folk paintings of Artist Cho and display various charms of Korean art to promote cultural understanding.
With the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Saudi Arabia last year and the President Yoon’s visit to Saudi Arabia this year, Korea and Saudi Arabia have a long history of deep friendship and have recently shown great interest in Korean culture and content. This exhibition presents a selection of folk paintings among artist Cho Mi-young's paintings so that anyone can easily get acquainted with Korean art and mindset of Koreans. This is a meaningful first opportunity that allows Saudi people to directly encounter the true soul and style of Koreans and lay the foundation for continuous artistic exchange along with deep understanding of its culture. As the exhibition title ‘Oasis’ suggests, people will discover the beauty of Korean painting, which allows the observer to achieve peace of mind, and simple an fundamental but true communication through painting, just as those who were exhausted from a long journey in the desert find a true haven and a safe and peaceful resting place

Is there anything in human life that has as much healing power as nature? As a person who majored in Korean painting, I am trying to find an answer in the antique Korean painting tradition, 'Minhwa'. I believe in the common power of natural healing art in both traditional painting and modern Korean painting! Folk art were used to wish for the health and good fortune of one's family, to prevent harm, to offer good wishes and admonishments, and sometimes even used as replacement for travel with scenes of nature.
Love, passion, health, healing, recovery, etc., have been closely related to the lives of Koreans for a long time by depicting nature and depicting scenes of life to bring peace of mind.
I believe that this is the same reason why folk paintings, which capture the soul of Korea,
have become loved and widely known around the world as the representative of Korea's K_ART today.
The feather artist, Mi Young Cho, draws and refines feathers with fine lines on traditional Korean materials. Seeking and looking for the essence of life in 'feathers' that fly freely through the air due to subtle differences in pressure or flow, and based on the traditional methods of Korean painting, utilizing the material characteristics of more nature-friendly traditional materials to create 'water' with fluid changes and spreads. We aim to capture Korea's nature through 'paintings'.
Minhwa or folk paintings are messages from the soul that contain the dreams of Koreans in life! A painting that is simple, natural, and resembling humor and love! Oasis~ I hope it spreads far and wide. Oasis~ I hope it becomes a resting place for everyone...
