Padres trade Long for May, Bukvich

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres traded one of their extra outfielders, Terrence Long, to Kansas City for left-hander Darrell May and right-hander Ryan Bukvich on Monday.

The Royals also obtained right-hander Dennis Tankersley.

May, who has averaged close to 200 innings the last two seasons, will be penciled in as the fourth starter. The Padres still hope to re-sign David Wells, who is a free agent. Bukvich gives the Padres a power arm out of the bullpen.

May went 9-19 with a 5.61 ERA in 31 starts in 2004. He threw three complete games, including a five-hit shutout of the Baltimore Orioles on June 9.

May led the Royals in wins and innings pitched for the second consecutive season. He threw 186 innings last season and 210 in 2003, when he was 10-8. Over parts of six big league seasons with four teams, May has a career record of 25-39 with a 4.98 ERA.

``We think his numbers should improve,'' general manager Kevin Towers said. ``Having a left-hander in this division is important. It's a good gamble. We're moving a guy who was an extra outfielder for a guy who has a chance to be a starter.''

With Long gone, Xavier Nady will have more playing time in the outfield. The Padres sent the Royals a little less than $1 million in cash to help offset Long's $4.7 million salary, but will still save approximately $500,000 in salary in the deal.

Bukvich appeared in nine game for the Royals last season, going 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA and one save.

Long batted .295 with three home runs and 28 RBIs. He and catcher Ramon Hernandez were obtained from Oakland in November 2003 for center fielder Mark Kotsay.

Tankersley went 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA in nine games, including six starts, last season.

굿 뉴스... 롱이야 말로 정말 계륵같은 존재였죠... 텡커슬리가 나가는게 가슴아프긴 하지만... 네디와 구즈만의 자리를 마련하기 위해선 롱을 처리해야 했죠..
메이도 4~5스팟에서 압박 덜 받으면 03시즌 모습 이상 보일듯... 110%
그나저나 참 텡커슬리 안타갑네...(지난 시즌에도 스프링 캠프에서 뭣 빠지게 고생해서 전반기 등판기회좀 얻었는데... 승운 엄청 없었더랬죠... 후반기 망가지긴 했지만...) 텡커슬리 캔자에서 꽃 피우길...
롱이나 메이나 머 다들 비리비리 한것 같은데... 근데 메이가 오는건 파드레스가 데이비드 웰스를 안잡겠다는 건가요? 그럼 양키즈로 다시??~^^ 샌디에고 웰스 1년 더 잡고 내년에 플옵 푸시해주면 잘될수도 있을건데...;;
