■ The Principles of KiMu and the Kinetic Chain
What Is the Kinetic Chain?
The Kinetic Chain is the principle that the body's joints and muscles do not function independently, but instead work together as one interconnected system, continuously transferring force and movement throughout the entire body.
This is especially important in stretching. Rather than thinking of each joint or muscle in isolation, we should always observe how one movement is connected to another and how the entire body responds as a unified whole.
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, the Kinetic Chain is understood as the full-body connection through which force generated from the feet is transmitted seamlessly through the legs, pelvis, trunk, shoulders, and arms to the very tip of the sword.
In other words, the flow of Ki is an integrated function of the human body expressed through the Kinetic Chain.
The flow of Ki is therefore not a mystical force. It is a physiological and functional phenomenon that emerges from the integration of breathing, intra-abdominal pressure, the nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and the Kinetic Chain.
The more efficiently this chain functions, the more effectively force is transmitted, unnecessary muscular tension is reduced, and movement becomes increasingly natural, efficient, and stable.
Conversely, when the Kinetic Chain is disrupted at any point, the transmission of force is interrupted, placing excessive stress on specific areas of the body.
As a result, the flow of Ki becomes stagnant, energy is wasted, fatigue accumulates more quickly, and recovery becomes slower.
If this condition continues over time, it may eventually lead to pain, dysfunction, and reduced physical performance.
In KiMu training, the body's central stability—created through natural breathing—is transmitted throughout the entire body via the Kinetic Chain.
Through this process, every movement becomes part of one continuous and harmonious flow.
As this connection becomes more refined, movement efficiency improves, while the motion and circulation of the body's organs and tissues become increasingly coordinated.
Consequently, the body becomes more active, more stable, and more resilient, while both physical performance and mental concentration are enhanced.
In summary,
Natural Breathing (Thoracic Cavity · Diaphragm · Pelvic Floor) → Intra-abdominal Pressure → Core Stability → Kinetic Chain → Flow of Ki → Seamless Transmission of Force to the Tip of the Sword
Within this continuous chain, the philosophy of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is naturally expressed through the principle of Il Do Yang Dan (一刀兩斷)—the ideal sword line that emerges according to each practitioner's level of understanding, experience, and cultivation.
Ref.) Definition of Il Do Yang Dan
Il Do Yang Dan (一刀兩斷) does not simply mean cutting through a target with a single stroke.
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, Il Do Yang Dan refers to the ideal sword line that naturally emerges when natural breathing, core stability, and the Kinetic Chain are integrated into one continuous flow, allowing force and Ki (energy) to be transmitted seamlessly from the feet to the tip of the sword.
Therefore, Il Do Yang Dan is not the result of brute strength, but a state that naturally manifests when the body, mind, breathing, and movement become fully integrated.
In other words, Il Do Yang Dan is not merely the technique of "cutting with a single stroke"; it is the highest expression of the most natural and complete movement produced by a body functioning as one unified system.

(Intra-abdominal Pressure) →
(Kinetic Chain) →
