On August 8, 2026, while sightseeing together in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do, I was talking with Martinho, an 8th Dan Taekwondo master from Brazil, when his name suddenly caught my attention.
Martinho?
That name seemed strangely familiar... Then it occurred to me that my Catholic baptismal name is Martino. Haha.
As it turns out, Martino is the Italian form and Martinho the Portuguese form, both derived from the same root and essentially the same name.
This was the first time in my life that I had met someone so closely whose name was the same as my baptismal name.
And not a Korean, but a martial artist from Brazil, on the other side of the world. What an interesting connection.
At moments like this, I am reminded of a thought:
There are no coincidences in this world.
There are only inevitabilities disguised as coincidences.
Among countless people, two martial artists who have devoted their lives to martial arts in different countries happened to meet, only to discover that even the roots of their names are the same. It makes me reflect once again on the subtle mystery of human connections.
What makes it even more interesting is that Saint Martin of Tours, from whom the name originates, was himself a soldier in the Roman army when he was young.
One bitterly cold winter day, he encountered a poor man shivering by the roadside. Having nothing else to give him, Martin used his sword to cut his military cloak in half and gave one half to the man.
What matters here is not the sword itself.
A sword can be used to harm someone, or it can be used to help someone.
The sword did not change.
What changed was the heart of the person holding it.
This is why I connect this story with the Buddhist principle of Ilche Yusimjo (一切唯心造) — everything ultimately arises from the mind.
In the practice of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, one of our most fundamental concepts is Follow the Energy, following the principles and flow of nature.
To truly follow that flow, however, we must first establish Balanced Breathing, and upon that breathing, cultivate a Balanced Mind.
As our practice deepens, we gradually come to understand that swordsmanship and KiMu, philosophy and healing, are not separate things. They are different expressions arising from one principle of nature.
Technique expresses that principle through the body.
Philosophy understands it through the mind and through life.
Healing is that same principle expressed in the direction of restoring life and well-being.
Ultimately, what matters is not how much power we possess.
The ultimate purpose of martial arts is not simply to become strong.
What truly matters is with what kind of mind, and for what purpose, we use that strength.
When we no longer confine these principles of nature to martial arts training, but place our everyday lives upon the same right path, we begin to realize something else.
When our breathing is balanced, our mind is not misguided, and the direction of our actions and our lives does not go against the principles of nature, health and happiness are no longer goals that we must desperately pursue.
They naturally follow as the result of such a life.
The same is true of blessings (福).
Blessings are not simply something we receive from someone else.
They are something we cultivate through the way we live our lives.
A good heart gives rise to good actions.
Good actions create good connections.
And those connections eventually come together to shape our lives.
Therefore, learning the sword is ultimately about much more than learning the sword itself.
Through the sword, we learn the body.
Through the body, we learn the mind.
Through the mind, we understand the principles of nature.
And we bring those principles back into our everyday lives through practice.
Through this process, we come to deeply realize that technique, philosophy, and healing are not three separate paths.
They arise from one principle and ultimately return to one.
When I think about it, the fact that Brazil's Martinho and my Martino met through martial arts...
Was it coincidence?
Or inevitability? Haha.
Perhaps Saint Martin sent a martial artist bearing the same name all the way from the other side of the world to remind me:
Don't just practice swinging the sword.
First, look carefully at the mind that moves the sword. Haha.
In the end, everything returns to the same place.
Ilche Yusimjo (一切唯心造).
Everything begins with the mind.
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu,
Follow the Energy does not mean forcing or creating the flow of nature. It means recognizing and following that flow through Balanced Breathing and a Balanced Mind.
The value of the sword does not lie in the sword itself. It lies in the mind of the person who holds it.
When the mind stands upright,
the practice stands upright.
When the practice stands upright,
the direction of life also becomes upright.
And as we continue walking that path,
health, happiness, and blessings (福)
need not be forcibly sought.
They naturally follow.

Martinho?
Haha.
Em momentos assim, lembro-me deste pensamento:
Haha.
No final, tudo retorna ao mesmo lugar.
Ilche Yusimjo (一切唯心造).
Tudo começa na mente.
No Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu,

Martinho?
