The Mission of Transmission in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu

Most martial arts primarily focus on physical skills: how to move, how to use a sword, and how to perform techniques with greater speed, power, and precision. When these techniques are taught to more people and spread to different countries, we may call this dissemination or expansion.

However, the purpose of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu goes beyond simply spreading martial arts skills. Its deeper mission is Transmission.

This can be understood through the example of a seed.

Giving seeds to many people is dissemination.
Explaining what the seed is and how to plant it is teaching.
Showing someone how to cultivate and care for it is education and training.

But Transmission goes deeper than all of these.

Transmission does not end with simply handing someone a seed.

The seed must take root within that person, grow by itself, eventually blossom, and bear fruit.

From that fruit, new seeds must then be able to reach others.

This is why, in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, Skill, Philosophy, and Medicine(Healing) are not three separate fields.

They are three expressions arising from one seed.

A seed develops roots, a trunk, branches, and leaves. Although each appears different and performs a different function, they are not separate forms of life. The same life and the same principle flow through them all.

Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu should be understood in the same way.

When we deeply understand the principles behind the movement of the sword, they are no longer limited to swordsmanship. They lead us toward an understanding of the human body, movement, and energy.

When we look more deeply into those same principles, they lead us toward philosophy — an understanding of the relationship between the mind, the human being, and nature.

And when those same principles are applied to restoring balance and helping the human body, they become Medicine and Healing.

Therefore,

The principle expressed through Skill,
the principle understood through Philosophy,
and the principle applied through Medicine
are not fundamentally different principles.

They are different manifestations and applications of one underlying principle.

This is why Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu repeatedly explains and emphasizes this truth through numerous examples and experiences.

The purpose is not merely for practitioners to memorize techniques, but for them to develop the ability to recognize the same principle within things that may appear completely different.

The Ultimate Purpose of Transmission

The purpose of Transmission is not to create someone who simply moves exactly as the teacher does.

Even after many years of instruction, if a student can only imitate the teacher's movements, the seed may have been given, but it has not yet truly taken root.

True Transmission begins when the practitioner no longer depends entirely upon the teacher's explanations, but becomes able to:

discover the principle independently,
recognize it through Skill,
understand it through Philosophy and life,
and apply it through Healing for the benefit of others.

At that point, the seed has become a living tree.

And when that person is able to produce new seeds and pass them on to others, Transmission develops into Succession.

For this reason, the worldwide expansion of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu cannot be measured simply by how many countries have schools or how many practitioners have been trained.

There may be a thousand practitioners in one country, but if only physical techniques remain, dissemination may have succeeded while true Transmission has not yet been achieved.

On the other hand, even if there is only one person who truly understands that Skill, Philosophy, and Medicine arise from the same underlying principle, embodies that principle in life, and becomes capable of transmitting it to another person, then the seed of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is already alive within that person.

This is the mission of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu:

☆ The purpose of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not merely to preserve or spread techniques,
but to transmit to each person a seed through which the One Principle can be realized.

That seed moves through Skill, is understood through Philosophy, serves others through Medicine and Healing, and ultimately produces new seeds that can be transmitted to others.

In this sense,

Dissemination increases the number of seeds.

Transmission continues the life within the seed.

That distinction lies at the heart of the mission of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.

대부분의 무술에서 중심이 되는 것은 육체적 술기이다. 어떻게 움직이고, 어떻게 검을 사용하며, 어떻게 더 빠르고 강하고 정확하게 기술을 수행할 것인가를 배우고 가르친다.

이러한 기술이 여러 사람과 여러 나라에 전달되면 우리는 그것을 보급이라고 한다.

그러나 진영쌍검류가 추구하는 목적은 단순한 술기의 보급에 머물지 않는다.

그보다 더 근본적인 목적은 전수(Transmission)다.

이를 하나의 씨앗에 비유할 수 있는데,
씨앗을 여러 사람에게 나누어 주는 것은 보급이 된다.

씨앗이 무엇이며 어떻게 심는지를 설명하는 것은 가르침이라고 한다.

씨앗을 직접 심어주고 기르는 방법을 반복해서 지도하는 것은 교육과 훈련이 된다.

그러나 전수는 그보다 훨씬 깊은 의미를 가진다.

전수란
씨앗을 건네주는 것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라, 그 씨앗이 한 사람의 내면에 뿌리를 내리고 스스로 성장하여 마침내 꽃을 피우고 열매를 맺도록 하는 것이다.

그리고 그 열매에서 다시 씨앗이 생겨 다른 사람에게 이어질 수 있어야 하는 것이다.

바로 이 때문에 진영쌍검류에서
술기(Skill), 철학(Philosophy), 의술(Medicine/Healing)은 서로 분리된 세 가지 분야가 아니라고 강조한다.

하나의 씨앗에서 나온 세 가지 모습을 말하기 때문이다.

씨앗이
뿌리가 되고, 줄기가 되고, 가지와 잎이 된다고 해서 서로 다른 생명체가 되는 것이 아니다.

겉으로 나타나는 형태와 기능은 다르지만 그 안을 흐르는 생명의 원리는 하나라는 말이다.

진영쌍검류도 마찬가지이다.

검을 움직이는 원리를 깊이 이해하면 그것은 단순한 검술에 머물지 않고 인체의 움직임과 에너지의 원리로 이어지기 마련이다.

그 움직임의 원리를 더 깊이 들여다보면
마음과 자연의 관계를 이해하는 철학으로 끊임없이 이어진다.

그리고 같은 원리를 사람의 균형과 회복에 적용하면 의술과 치유로 이어지게 되는 것이다.

따라서,

술기에서 사용하는 이치와
철학에서 깨닫는 이치와
의술에서 적용하는 이치는
본질적으로 서로 다른 것이 아니다.

그 표현과 쓰임이 다를 뿐, 하나의 이치가 서로 다른 모습으로 나타난 것이다.

이것이 진영쌍검류에서 수많은 예와 경험을 통해 반복하여 설명하고 강조하는 이유이다.

수련자가 단순히 기술을 기억하는 데 그치지 않고, 서로 달라 보이는 현상 속에서 같은 원리를 스스로 발견할 수 있어야 하기 때문이다.

그렇다면 전수의 최종 목적은 무엇인가?

전수의 목적은
나와 똑같이 움직이는 사람을 만드는 것이 아니다.

스승이 평생 가르쳐도 제자가 스승의 동작만 흉내 내고 있다면 씨앗은 전달되었을지 몰라도 아직 제대로 뿌리를 내린 것은 아니게 된다.

진정한 전수는
어느 순간부터 수련자가 스승의 설명에만 의존하지 않고,

하나의 이치를 스스로 발견하고,
그 이치를 술기에서 확인하고,
삶과 철학에서 깨닫고,
다시 다른 사람을 돕는 데 적용할 수 있게 된다.

그때 비로소 씨앗은 살아 있는 나무가 된다.

그리고 그 사람이 자신에게서 얻어진 새로운 씨앗을 다시 다음 사람에게 전달할 수 있을 때, 전수는 계승으로 이어진다.

그래서 진영쌍검류의 세계적 확산은

단순히 얼마나 많은 나라에 도장을 만들었는가,

얼마나 많은 수련생을 확보했는가만으로 평가될 수 없다는 말이다.

한 나라에 천 명의 수련자가 있어도 술기만 남았다면 그것은 보급에는 성공했을지 몰라도 전수는 완성되지 않았을 수 있다는 말이다.

반대로 단 한 사람이라도 술기·철학·의술이 하나의 이치에서 나온다는 것을 깨닫고,

그것을 자기 삶 속에서 체득하여 다시 다른 사람에게 전할 수 있다면, 그 한 사람 안에는 이미 진영쌍검류의 씨앗이 살아 있다는 것이 된다.

그래서 진영쌍검류의 사명을 한 문장으로 압축한다면,

진영쌍검류의 목적은
기술을 남기는 것이 아니라,
하나의 이치를 깨달을 수 있는 씨앗을 사람에게 전수하는 것이다.

그 씨앗은
술기로 움직이고,
철학으로 깨달으며,
의술로 사람을 이롭게 하고,
마침내 또 다른 사람에게 이어진다.

결국
보급은 씨앗의 숫자를 늘리는 일이고,
전수는 씨앗의 생명을 이어가는 일이라고 구별할 수 있게 된다.
