7. Di Shui Shi( The Army / The Troops).
▣ Xiang Xiang(The lmage) says : Water within the earth forms the Army;
thus, noble man embraces the people and nurtures the multitude.
[Explanation]
The lmage says : Earth storing water within it represents the Shi(師卦,사괘 -Army) Hexagram;
Emulating this, the noble man should embrace and nurture the people like the vast earth.
The methods of nurturing the people also differ depending on the times.
In times of peace, one spreads the Royal Way to make the people happy,
however, as this is a time to prepare for times of war,
ane cannot neglect teaching comebat and training.
Therefore, if there is a ruler governing the nation, like water flowing silently beneath the earth.
they must not forget to secretly gather and train troops of soldiers[容民畜衆,용민축중 -
Yong Min Xu Zhong].
Yet, embracing the people and nurturing the multitude ins not inherently something one
in a lower position can accomplish.
The reason [Nine in the Second Position] becomes the general is not merely because
it is a strong Yang line forming military power,
but because it possesses the image of rising up to command and lead.
Embracing the people and nurturing the multitude is not practiced solely within the military.
The Emperor rules the world under heaven, feudal lords rule their nations,
and high officials rile their families.
Nothing in the world is as abundant as water,
and if it cannot be contained, it spills over; thus, the virtue of embracing the people
like containing water is precisely what Shi(師,사 - The Army) signifies.
people of later generations failed to understand this meaning,
driving resentful and rebellious subjects into war,
seeking only temporary merit while throwing the state and its people into the thickets
as food for beasts; is this not also foolish?
Dongpo quored Mobo, a military strategist of the State of Ql, saying:
"The ancient kings made their virtue shine bright, while keeping their military forces invisible.
Indeed, militaryforces are to be gathered with caution and deployed only at the proper time.
If military forces are displayed openly, it becomes a game; if used casually as a game,
majesty is lost.
Though military forces cannot be dispensed with for even a single day,
they must remain invisible like water,"
Which is an opinion that fully aligns with Confucius's Daxiang[
Water within the earth forms thr Army].
In the Xugua Zhuan(서괘전 - Sequence of the Hexagrams), it is said, "Conflict inevitably
gives rise to a multitude[訟必有衆起,송필유중기 - Song Bi You Zhong Qi ],
so the Shi(師,사 - Army) is needed to resolve that multitude,"
and in the Zagua Zhuan(잡괘전 - Miscellaneous Hexagrams),
the statement "Union(比,비 - Bi) bringa joy, but the Army(師,사 -Shi) brings sorrow"
allsignifies that the military causes suffering to the people.
This means that no matter how great a contribution a general makes on the battlefield
to win a war and protect the nation,
it inevitably brinngs numerous casualties and deaths.
Meanwhile, military strategy also involves forming battle arrays in the pattern
of the Shi Hexagram or entrusting soldiers with farming,
showing that Earth(地지, - Di) was viewed as farmers and Water(水,수 - Shui) as soidiers.
In conclusion, the true masters of a nation are its people,
and since the people bear the duty to defend that nation,
the noble man must embrace the people like the vast earth and nurture them into
responsible masters of the nation.
