News Digest #1 - 이탈리아 법원, 지진을 제대로 예고하지 못했다는 이유로 과학자와 공무원에게 실형 선고
An Italian court has found six Italian scientists and an ex-government official guilty of multiple manslaughter, sentencing them to six years in prison each over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila. The verdict stated that the defendants had failed to give adequate warning of a devastating 6.3 magnitude quake, which killed over 300 people and left thousands homeless.
The defendants were indicted for giving "inexact, incomplete, and contradictory information." The prosecutors argued that although they did not expect a precise forecast from the defendants, the disaster experts had downplayed the extent of the dangers a few days before the quake.
Seismologists were flabbergasted by the verdict, contending that there is no reliable method to predict earthquakes. The case is being scrutinized globally as scientists may be reluctant to advise the government from now on in fear of possible repercussions. For now, it is unlikely that the defendants will face jail time anytime soon as convictions aren't definitive until after at least a round of appeals.

News Digest #2 – 나로(Naro)호, 오는 26일(금) 세 번째 발사 시도
South Korea's Minister of Education, Science and Technology Lee Ju-ho announced earlier this week that the nation has given the green light to launch the Naro-1 space rocket on Friday. This marks Korea's third attempt to launch the country's first space rocket.
As weather forecasts are predicting precipitation for Friday, the launch preparations committee designated the dates from October 26th through the 31st as the possible launch dates, with the 26th named as the provisional launch date; the Korea Aerospace Research Institute says the launch could be delayed even up to seconds prior to the launch if all conditions are not met.
A successful launch of the rocket would make Korea the 10th nation in the world to accomplish the feat, but its technology gap with other space developers would still be quite wide. In order to bridge this gap, Seoul has approved a second space program, with hopes to launch a three-stage rocket by 2021.

Word Play - ORIGINS
KENNY: Wow. It’s really raining hard out there. What time is the party tonight?
HYUN: About eight o’clock.
KENNY: When’s Lina getting here?
HYUN: She should be here soon. I think that’s her now…
KENNY: Lina! You’re soaked! Didn’t you take an umbrella with you today?
LINA: No. I was going to, but then Hyun kindly told me it wasn’t going to rain today. [looks at Hyun] HYUN!! It's raining cats and dogs!!!!
HYUN: [nonchalant] I’m not the weatherman.
I don’t know if it’s going to rain or not.
LINA: I think you did it on purpose. I thought I could get here before it started raining.
HYUN: Close, but no cigar.
LINA: I’m going to go dry myself off.
KENNY: (whisper) Did you tell her on purpose?
HYUN: Of course I did! But I didn’t expect it to rain THIS hard…
I kinda feel bad now!
EXPRESSION 1: It’s raining cats and dogs
- Meaning: To rain heavily.
- Origin: The much more probable source of 'raining cats and dogs' is the prosaic fact that, in the filthy streets of 17th/18th century England, heavy rain would occasionally carry along dead animals and other debris. The animals didn't fall from the sky, but the sight of dead cats and dogs floating by in storms could well have caused the coining of this colourful phrase. Jonathan Swift described such an event in his satirical poem first published in the 1710 collection of the Tatler magazine. (17-18세기 영국에 비가 많이 오면 동물 사체가 물에 떠내려가는 것에서 유래 - 개/고양이가 싸우는 것이 아님)
- EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
1. Don’t go outside today – it’s raining cats and dogs.
2. We wanted to go hiking today but it’s raining cats and dogs so now we can’t go.
3. My wife said it will rain cats and dogs later this afternoon.
CF) to fight like cats and dogs!
EXPRESSION 2: Close, but no cigar
- Meaning: Being near success, but just missing out.
- Origin: Originally, fairground stalls favored gifting cigars to winners rather than over stuffed, over-sized plush toys. Winning was nearly impossible (as it is today) and so if you failed to win, you got no cigar.
(놀이공원 게임 부스에서 1등하는 사람에게 cigar를 주었던데 데서 유래된 표현)
- EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
1. I thought I was going to be promoted, but my boss promoted someone else. I was close, but no cigar.
2. Did you watch the movie ‘Die Hard’? The bad guy almost managed to escape with all the money. He was close, but no cigar.
3. My friend almost won the jackpot last week – he had five of the numbers. Close, but no cigar. (복권)
Morning Tips - Helpful Hints to Prevent Excess Hair Loss
(Information on Morning Tips is compiled from a variety of sources on the internet and they are for informational purposes only.)
Helpful Food
1. H20 and Beverages - Drinking water can help, since dehydration slows blood circulation, causing hair loss and dandruff. Green tea may also be helpful since it makes small blood vessels expand and promotes circulation.
2. Foods - Tuna, anchovies, mackerel and other types of oily fish, such as salmon! Lettuce, radishes, green peppers and fruit strengthen the follicles and improve blood circulation in the scalp. Also, adequate protein can help to provide the amino acids that strengthen hair - get your protein in nuts, beans, cheese, white-meat poultry, yogurt, eggs, soy and low-dairy products!
Helpful Habits
1. Give the Styling a Break - Hair can easily become damaged, dry, and brittle from over-styling. Constant use of hot styling tools, frequent shampooing, vigorous or frequent brushing, and too many products can all lead to breakage and thinning hair.
2. Less Shampooing! - Don't wash your hair everyday. You will strip your scalp of its natural oils. In the colder weather, try a wash every other day! If you can't stand to do that, wash daily but with a mild shampoo - like those used on babies!
3. Avoid brushing wet hair - This snaps off a lot of hair that could still be growing! If you must comb wet hair, use a very wide-toothed comb or just use your fingers to undo tangles, not a comb or brush. When your hair is dry, opt for a soft-bristled brush.
4. Pat, don't rub - Avoid rubbing hair vigorously with a towel after washing it. This can also lead to hair breakage. Pat it dry gently instead.
5. Leave the hats at home - Hats can keep you warm and shade your eyes, but the hats are a big no-no when it comes to preventing hair loss. It doesn't allow your scalp and your hair to breathe!
The VIP Treatment
1. Self-Scalp Massages - Massaging your scalp for a few minutes daily will help stimulate circulation. Good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active.
2. Hot oil treatments - Take any natural oil - olive, coconut, canola - and heat it up so that it is warm, but not too hot. Massage it gently into your scalp. Put on a shower cap and leave it on for an hour, then shampoo your hair.
3. Natural juice treatments - You can rub your scalp with either garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice. Leave it on overnight and wash it thoroughly in the morning.
