Students often manage to travel long distances on very limited budgets. The secret is to find cheap travel, food and accommodation.
In the 1960s, British students did this through hitch-hiking and youth hostelling. It can still be done today, though drivers are much more reluctant to offer lifts to strangers.
Youth hostels are also more expensive as they tend to offer a greater level of comfort. Hostellers used to carry their own sheet sleeping bags and would expect to sleep in bunk beds, often within large single sex dormitories. A long walk to one of few outside toilets was not uncommon.
Today, other possibilities present themselves to people living near one of Britain"s international airports. The cost of international rail travel has become prohibitive, but hopping around Europe on charter flights can be done very cheaply. The chief snag is finding reasonably priced accommodation when you arrive at your destination.
Cheap flights are advertised on Teletext, in most Sunday newspapers and on the web sites of budget airlines such as "Go", "Easy Jet" and "Ryan Air". Tickets can be purchased by credit card over the phone.
The very cheapest flights are to be found on the Internet where you can look for special offers, specify what kind of meal you want and even choose your exact seat, providing it has not already been booked. Payment is by credit card over a secure page and you will receive confirmation of your booking by e-mail.
Whether your reservations are made by phone or on the net, you will be given a booking reference number. If it is too late for your tickets to reach you by post, you can collect them at the airport on your day of departure by quoting your reference number.
Many British people own holiday apartments in Spain and let their properties to holiday-makers when they are not using them themselves. The apartments are usually well maintained and in beautiful locations.
My best trip
My perfect trip would be to Fiji. Fiji Island is situated in the South West Pacific. There are almost four hundred islands with gorgeous palm-fringed beaches and lagoons, truly beautiful coral reefs, rich rainforest and a traditional village-orientated culture. This makes it an all round destination for beach vacations, active holidays and exploring.
Fiji has the most developed tourist infrastructure of the South Pacific nations. With almost 400,000 tourists in 2002, it is the envy of its neighbours. There are over 100 hotels and resorts scattered throughout the group with many more budget hostels. Travel is cheap and attractions are varied.
Viti Levu is the heart with the tourist town of Nadi and capital Suva. Over half the 800,000 population live here. Viti Levu is characterised by high tropical mountains, dry on the leeward west side (nadi) and wet on the windward east side (suva). The remote interior is one of the greatest wildernesses in the Pacific whilst on the southern coast, in stark contrast, large international hotel chains cater mostly to the Australian and Japanese package holiday market.
The offshore coral atolls of the Mamanuca Group are the gem in Fiji"s tourism. Here there are lots of up-market beach resorts, water activities and day cruises. Backpackers head further north to the Yasawa Group where secluded beaches, locally run beach resorts and great snorkelling offer the ultimate chill out destination.
The country is blessed with some of the finest scuba diving (notably soft corals) and surfing waves in the world. Specialist resorts and live abords catering exclusively for these markets offer the ultimate adventure holiday. And Fiji"s rich culture and traditional lifestyle, along with its friendly people, offer a great backdrop for exploring.
I really hope to visit Fiji soon, I have heard it has amazing beauty and is extremely realaxing.
My worst trip
The worst place to take a trip to would be Iraq. There is a war on you know!
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, Iraq became an independent kingdom in 1932. A "republic" was proclaimed in 1958, but in actuality a series of military strongmen have ruled the country since then, the latest being SADDAM Husayn. Territorial disputes with Iran led to an inconclusive and costly eight-year war (1980-88). In August 1990, Iraq seized Kuwait, but was expelled by US-led, UN coalition forces during the Gulf War of January-February 1991. Following Kuwait"s liberation, the UN Security Council (UNSC) required Iraq to scrap all weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles and to allow UN verification inspections. Continued Iraqi noncompliance with UNSC resolutions during the past 12 years resulted in the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 and the ouster of the SADDAM Husayn regime. Coalition forces remain in Iraq, helping to restore degraded infrastructure and facilitating the establishment of a freely elected government.
Iraq holds no interest for me, regardless of war. Besides, I don"t think it really welcomes tourists, especially Western ones!
