KiMu Session — From the Long Sword to the Short Needle
Practical Experience of Skills · Philosophy · Healing
August 30, 2026
During the KiMu Session, we explored and experienced several essential principles of KiMu.
KiMu was born from the practice and principles of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
Therefore, KiMu practice, sword practice, and healing should not be understood as separate subjects.
They arise from the same fundamental principle.
When we truly embody the principles of KiMu and understand the essence of martial arts practice through the body, we begin to realize something very important:
Whether we practice with a long sword, work with a very short needle, or use any other tool, we never leave the same fundamental principle.
The size and form of the tool may change, but the principle does not.
This is why I often say:
While I teach you how to practice with a long sword, I am also teaching you how to practice with a short needle.
The sword teaches us how to relax, connect, feel, follow, and move without unnecessary force.
The needle asks for the same thing.
The long sword makes the principle visible through larger movements.
The short needle reveals the same principle through extremely subtle movements.
Long Sword → Short Needle
Different Tools → Same Principle
Once the principle has truly been acquired through the body, we no longer depend entirely on the tool.
The sword is a tool.
The needle is a tool.
The body is also a tool through which the principle is expressed.
What matters most is whether we have embodied the fundamental principle behind them.
This is why KiMu is deeply connected to martial arts practice.
During this KiMu Session, we explored this connection practically through the following process:
Three Deep Breaths
→ Vagal Activity
→ Parasympathetic Activation
→ Relaxation
→ Zeroized Mind
→ Find One Reference Point
→ Connect with Nature
→ Feel and Follow
→ Confirm
→ No More Energy Flow
→ Let Go
1. Why We Take Three Deep Breaths
Before trying to find the reference point, we take three slow, deep breaths.
Slow, deep breathing, especially with a relaxed and prolonged exhalation, helps increase vagal activity and shift the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic activity.
This reduces unnecessary tension and quiets the body's stress response, preparing the body for the next stage.
Three Deep Breaths → Vagal Activity → Parasympathetic Activation → Relaxation
2. How to Bring the Body into a Zeroized-Mind State
As unnecessary tension and conscious interference decrease, the body becomes quieter and more neutral.
This is the state I call Zeroized Mind.
It does not mean forcing the mind to become empty.
It means bringing the body and mind to a neutral starting point from which subtle sensations can be recognized more clearly.
Relaxation → Zeroized Mind → Ready to Feel
3. How to Find One Reference Point for One Needle
From this Zeroized-Mind state, we begin to observe and feel the body carefully.
Instead of searching everywhere, we find one clear reference point.
That one point becomes the basis for placing one needle.
One Point → One Needle
The purpose is not to search for many points, but to recognize the one point that the body naturally reveals.
4. How to Connect with Nature
Once the reference point is recognized, we do not force anything.
We observe, feel, and follow the natural response.
The purpose is not simply to think about nature, but to experience the connection directly through the body.
Observe → Feel → Follow
5. How to Check and Confirm the Connection with Nature
Finally, we check whether the connection has actually been established by observing and feeling the response of the body.
We continue to follow the flow only as long as there is something to follow.
When there is no more energy flow, we stop.
We do not try to create another response or force the energy to continue.
Connect → Feel → Follow → Confirm → No More Flow → Let Go
This completes the practical process experienced during the KiMu Session.
The Whole Process
Three Deep Breaths
→ Vagal Activity
→ Parasympathetic Activation
→ Relaxation
→ Zeroized Mind
→ Find One Reference Point
→ Connect with Nature
→ Feel and Follow
→ Confirm
→ No More Energy Flow
→ Let Go
KiMu is not about forcing energy.
It is about preparing the body, becoming quiet enough to recognize the reference point, connecting with the natural flow, following it, and knowing when there is nothing more to follow.
This is also why Skills, Philosophy, and Healing are not three separate paths in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
They are different expressions of the same fundamental principle.
The sword is long.
The needle is short.
The principle is one.
Skills → Philosophy → Healing
Different Expressions → One Principle
