Defense Ministry mulls office-wide iPhone ban

국방부, 때아닌 '아이폰 비상' 이유 알고 보니…

In a move to vamp up security amidst the influx of smartphone users, the Ministry of National Defense stated yesterday that it is reviewing a policy to ban bringing iPhones into Defense Ministry-related offices.

The Defense Ministry announced yesterday that it plans to run a Mobile Device Management system in order to secure smartphone usage in its headquarters in Yonsan District, central Seoul, and its affiliated buildings from August. In areas where this system is operated, calls, Internet usage, recording and photo-taking on smartphones can be limited and monitored.

To prevent the device from leaking information, the MDM controls the data configuration setting for mobile devices in its network, and even simple features like screen capture can be blocked.

The source code of the operating system of the smartphone needs to be known for an application to be developed, said the ministry, and Android developer Google reveals its source code. “Apple doesn’t reveal [its source code] thus, a security app for iPhones has not been developed,” said a Defense Ministry official yesterday.

국방부, 청사내 아이폰 반입금지 검토

국방부가 군내 스마트폰 사용이 늘어나면서 보안체계를 강화하고 있지만 통제가 어려워 청사내 아이폰 반입 금지를 검토하고 있다.

27일 군 당국 관계자는 “오는 8월부터 국방부는 본관과 현재 신축중인 합동참모본부 건물에 스마트폰 통제를 위한 모바일단말관리(MDM·Mobile Device Management) 시스템을 도입할 예정이다”고 전했다.

MDM시스템은 특정지역에서 스마트 기기의 불법 사용과 정보 유출을 차단하기 위해 단말기 잠금, 초기화, 원격삭제, 화면캡처 방지 기능 등을 원격 관리할 수 있다.

그러나 MDM시스템은 안드로이드 운영체제(OS) 스마트폰만 제어할 수 있고 IOS 운영체제를 사용하는 아이폰에는 시스템이 적용되지 않는다. MDM시스템을 적용하기 위해서는 스마트폰 제조사가 보안시스템에 관한 정보를 공개해야 하지만 아이폰을 만드는 애플사가 이를 꺼리는 것으로 알려졌다.

군 관계자는 “군내에서 아이폰 사용을 금지하는 게 아니라 청사에 출입할 때는 별도의 보관대에 맡기는 방안을 검토 중이다”며 “국방부는 청사내 보안 강화를 위해 스마트폰 통제 및 방문객 관리도 강화할 방침이다”고 설명했다.http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2952126
