FTA will Help Level the Playing field for American Automakers

We agreed to move ahead quickly with the landmark trade agreement that Congress passed last night—and which I’ll sign in the coming days.

It’s a win for both our countries.  For our farmers and ranchers here in the United States, it will increase exports of agricultural products.

From aerospace to electronics, it will increase American manufacturing exports, including those produced by our small businesses.

It will open Korea’s lucrative services market, and I’m very pleased that it will help level the playing field for American automakers.

양국은 어제 밤 미 의회에서 통과된 역사적 무역 협정을 조속히 실행해 나가기로 합의 했습니다.

그리고 조만간 법안이 의회에서 넘어오면 내가 이 법안에 즉각 서명할 것입니다.

자유 무역협정은 양국 모두에 이득이 되는 윈-윈 협상입니다. 미국의 농민들과 목축업자들은 (자유무역협정으로 인해) 농산물을 더 많이 수출할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

이번 협정은 또 중소기업에서 전자, 그리고 항공 우주 산업 분야에 이르기까지, 미국의 수출을 증가시킬 것입니다.

이 협정은 또 한국의 전망이 좋은 서비스 시장을 개방시킬 것입니다.

이번 협정으로 미국의 자동차 업계가 공정한 경쟁을 벌일 수 있게 돼 기쁩니다.

지난 밤 오바마 대통령이 한국의 이명박 대통령과 저녁을 들고 있을 때, 미 의회가 한국과, 콜롬비아, 파나마 3개국과의 자유 무역 협정을 비준했습니다.

즉 ‘미국과 한국 양국은 어제 밤 미 의회에서 통과된 역사적인 무역 협정을 조속히 실행해 나가기로 합의했습니다.’ 라는 뜻이죠.

▷ Move ahead : ~ (무엇 무엇을) 진행시키다, 발전시키다, 실시하다

Move 는 동사로 ‘~(무엇 무엇)을 움직이다, 이동시키다’는 뜻이 있고요, ‘ahead’는 ‘앞으로, 앞서서’라는 뜻이 있죠. 그래서 ‘move ahead’는 ‘앞으로 이동시키다, 즉 발전시키다, ~계획 등을 실시하다’는 뜻이 됩니다.

본문에서는 we agreed to move ahead quickly with the landmark trade agreement, move ahead with something이라는 표현을 썼는데요 ‘계획 따위를 실시하다, 밀고 나가다’는 뜻으로 쓰였죠.

이렇게 ‘Move’ 뒤에 ‘ahead’가 나와서 ‘move ahead with something’하면 ‘make progress’ ‘발전시켜 나가다’는 뜻 있다고 했는데요, 이밖에 동사 ‘move’ 뒤에 ‘on’, 이라든지, ‘up’ 이 오면 또 뜻이 달라집니다.

▷ Move up: ~ (무엇 무엇으로) 승진하다

Ex) I hope you can move up to a management position in five years.
- 5년 안에 매니저로 승진할 수 있기를 바래.

- 조만간 승진될 가능성이 있나요?

• Landmark: 역사적인, 획기적인

- Landmark is one of the most important events, changes, or discoveries that influence someone or something.

‘Landmark’에는 여러 가지 뜻이 있는데요, 우선 ‘눈에 잘 띄는 건물’ 이라는 뜻이 있습니다.

예를 들어 Washington Monument는 워싱턴 DC를 대표하는 건물입니다, 영어로는 ‘The Washington Monument is a popular historical landmark of Washington DC.’할 수 있죠.

Ex) A: What is a landmark of New York City?
뉴욕을 대표하는 Landmark는 뭔가요?

B: I think the Empire State Building is the landmark of New York City.
엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩이 뉴욕을 대표하는 건물이라고 생각해요.

A: What is the landmark of North Korea?
북한을 대표하는 건물에는 뭐가 있나요?

B: Actually, it has more than one landmark.  North Korean landmarks include the Arch of Triumph, the Tower of Juche Idea and the Taedong Gates.
북한을 대표하는 건축물에는 ‘Arch of Triumph’, ‘평양 개선문’, ‘The Tower of Juche Idea’ ‘주체 사상 탑’, 그리고 ‘the Taedong gates’ ‘평양 대동 문’ 등이 있죠.

이밖에 또 landmark하면 ‘One of the most important events or changes’역사적인 사건이나 변화, 획기적인 사건이라는 의미가 있는데요, 미국의 대표적인 landmark event 하면 ‘Voting Rights ACT of 1965’, ‘선거 권리 법’을 빼놓을 수 없죠!

Ex) The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is considered landmark legislation in US history.
1965년 선거 권리 법은 미국의 역사적인 법안으로 여겨지고 있습니다.

한국의 이명박 대통령도 같은 날 연설에서 미-한 자유 무역 협정은 한국과 미국에 모두 이득이 되는 ‘윈-윈 협상’이라고 말했는데요, 이명박 대통령의 발언을 뭐라고 통역했는지 살펴볼까요?
