비록 위건 어슬래틱이 2연패로 시즌을 시작했지만 언제나 복안을 가지고 움직이는 스티브브루스가 감독인 이상 이번 시즌 그들이 강등권 탈출을 위한 경쟁에 포함되지는 않을 것으로 보인다.

브루스 감독은 팀 전력의 강화를 위해 다양한 방법을 모색하고 있으며 또한 젊은 유망주들의 재능을 관찰하며 차근차근 미래를 준비하고 있다.

이적시장에서 다소간의 위험부담을 떠 앉는 것을 마다하지 않는다는 보여주면서 브루스 감독은 장래성 높은 유망주인 윌손 팔라시오스와 안토니오 발렌시아를 영입하는데 성공했다.

역시 새로 영입한 아므르 자키는 흥미로운 공격력을 지닌 선수로 웨스트햄을 상대로 한 팀 데뷔전에서 멋진 발리슛을 터뜨리며 팀의 인기선수로 자리잡을 수 있는 가능성을 보여주었다. 하지만 브루스 감독의 유망주 영입 노력이 이들 세 명으로 끝난 것은 아니다. 그는 9월1일 이적시한 전에 몇 명의 선수를 더 영입할 계획을 세워두고 있다.

한국의 박주영을 영입하는 것에 의문부호가 남아있긴 하지만 위건의 스카우팅 팀은 이 FC 서울의 포워드에 대해 긍정적인 평가를 내렸으며 이에 따라 브루스 감독은 그의 영입을 적극 모색하고 있다.

미들스보로에서 이동국이 맞본 처참한 실패 이후 클럽들은 한국 선수들을 영입하는 것에 대해 다소 유보적인 입장을 보이고 있다. 그렇지만 한국에 많은 유망주들이 뛰고 있다는 것은 주지의 사실이며 이들을 잉글랜드 무대로 데려올 수 있다면 이는 훌륭한 선택이 될 것이다.

웨스트 브롬위치의 김두현은 아스날 전에서 기술적 완성도와 영리한 플레이를 선보이며 팀에게 결정적인 기회들을 제공했다. 이와 같은 한국 선수들의 훌륭한 기술적 완성도는 적합한 시스템에 합류할 경우 빠른 적응을 도와줄 수 있는 요소이다.

브루스 감독은 젊은 선수들의 재능을 이끌어내는 데에 탁월한 재주를 가지고 있으며 따라서 만일 소속팀의 동의를 구할 수 있다면 박주영 역시 이적을 진지하게 고려해 보아야 한다.

맨유의 주장이었던 브루스 감독은 철저한 계획 하에 그 실천을 위해 분주히 움직이고 있다. 스쿼드의 빈 틈을 다소 낯선 외국인 선수들로 채워가는 동시에 리 캐터몰이나 마이클 브라운과 같이 비교적 검증된 영국 출신 선수들의 영입에도 노력을 기울이고 있는 것이다.

비록 부상에 시달리고 있긴 하지만 영국에서 가장 뛰어난 골키퍼들 중 하나라고 평가 받는 크리스 커클랜드의 존재 역시 브루스 감독이 웨스트햄과 첼시에게 당한 연패에도 불구하고 긍정적으로 이번 시즌을 바라보는 이유다.

브루스 감독이 언급했던 바와 같이 마이크 폴릿이 골키퍼로 출장한 첼시와의 경기에서 그들은 1점을 내준 채 아깝게 패배하고 말았다. 홈관중들은 데쿠가 만들어 낸 골이 네트를 가르는 순간 실망감을 감출 수가 없었을 것이다.

하지만 우리는 여기서 첼시가 위건을 상대로 웨스트햄 전에서 보여주었던 압도적인 실력차를 선보이지 못했다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 이런 점을 고려해본다면 JJB 스타디움에는 아직 희망이 드리워져 있는 셈이다.
 
“리 캐터몰과 같이 재능 넘치는 영국 선수들을 영입하는 걸 마다할 이유는 없습니다.” 브루스 감독의 이야기다. “그렇다면 선수들이 대표팀 출전을 위해 온두라스나 멕시코 시티로 갈 필요가 없겠죠. 어떤 이들은 그런 점을 고려해 외국인 선수를 영입해야 한다고 주장하지만, 사실 저희에게는 별 선택의 여지가 없습니다.”

“자키의 영입을 위해 카이로에 가는 일이 썩 내키지는 않았지만 그의 경기 내용을 지켜보았다면 왜 그를 영입했는지 알 수 있으실 겁니다.”

“그가 카이로 경기장을 휘젓는 모습을 본 순간 뭔가 특별한 재능이 있다고 생각했죠.”

브루스 감독이 직감적으로 선수들의 재능을 분별하는 자신의 방법을 고칠 필요는 없다고 생각한다. 박주영은 잉글랜드 축구에 잘 적응할 수 있는 또 하나의 유망주이며 큰 클럽의 부름을 기다리기 전에 위건에서 자신의 가치를 입증할 필요가 있다.

만일 위건이 매년마다 올해와 같이 2~3건의 영입을 성사시킨다면 그들은 지속적인 상승세를 탈 것이며 팀의 스쿼드는 점점 더 강력해질 것이다.

8월이 가기 전에 브루스가 또 다시 영입에 성공한다면 당분간 위건은 중위권에서 비교적 느긋하게 다른 팀들의 강등권 탈출 경쟁을 지켜보게 될 것이다.

Wigan Athletic may have started the season with two defeats but Steve Bruce is a man with a plan and it is difficult to imagine that the Lancashire club will be involved in a relegation fight this season.

Bruce is considering a variety of ways of strengthening his squad and is not afraid to look very far afield for fresh talent.

By showing he is prepared to take risks in the transfer market, he has unearthed a couple of real gems in Wilson Palacios and Antonio Valencia.

Palacios has shone in both Premier League games this term to follow up an impressive debut campaign last time around.

His two bone-crunching challenges in quick succession against Chelsea had the JJB crowd on their feet and it is little wonder Arsene Wenger recommended him to Wigan. In fact, Arsenal could do worse themselves than look to the Honduras international to solve their midfield problems.

Valencia has speed and a direct nature that is exciting in wingers and he should improve as the season wears on as his confidence grows.

New boy Amr Zaki looks an interesting proposition in attack, scoring a wonderful volley on his debut at West Ham, and showing early signs of becoming a crowd favourite.

The hard-running Egypt attacker has a fine goalscoring record and certainly has the strength to impose himself at Premier League level.

Yet Bruce is not prepared to pin all of his hopes on this exotic trio, instead preferring to execute further coups before the deadline on September 1.

South Korean Park Chu-young would be something of a gamble but the scouting reports on the FC Seoul forward have been positive and Bruce is pondering a move.

Lee Dong-gook's dreadful spell at Middlesbrough may have put some clubs off investing in Korean talent but everybody knows there is an awful lot of talent in the Far East, if it can be put to good use in the English game.

West Brom's Kim Do-heon showed great dexterity and clever use of the ball at Arsenal in his side's opener and the exceptional technical nature of South Korean players mean they can fit into a system providing it is the right one.

Bruce is more capable than most of getting the best out of his signings so Park could be advised to seriously consider Wigan if a bid is accepted by his club.

The main thing with the former Manchester United captain is he does have a master-plan and is busy putting it into operation. Sprinkling his squad with unproven but affordable exotic signings, he backs it up with some reliable British grafters like Lee Cattermole and Michael Brown.

Keeper Chris Kirkland is one of the brightest in the country, although his injury problems remain a concern, and it is easy to see why the Wigan manager remains optimistic for the season's prospects despite falling short against The Hammers and title-chasing Chelsea.

As Bruce was quick to point out, Luiz Felipe Scolari's side had only one shot at stand-in goalie Mike Pollitt. Unfortunately for the home side, it came from the boot of Deco and nestled in the back of the net.

But, the fact that Chelsea were unable to roll over Wigan in the same manner as they had pummeled Portsmouth the previous weekend, will be of some consolation to the upwardly mobile team from The JJB Stadium.

“I would love here genuinely to buy British, and young British, like I did with Lee Cattermole," said Bruce.

"Then you wouldn’t have the problem of them flying to Honduras and Mexico City [on international duty],
when they are away for days. People say that you should know that when you sign them, but I have no choice.
 
“I didn’t like to have to go to Cairo to get Zaki, but when you see him play, you can see it was worth it.

"I saw him rampaging around the stadium in Cairo, and I thought 'He’s got something.'”

Bruce must not be afraid to trust his instincts when making such daring raids. Park could be another player capable of learning the English game and proving his worth at Wigan before biggger clubs come calling.

It only takes two or three such transfers every year to keep Wigan on an upward curve and improving their squad has to be the nature of the game.

If Bruce can do that again before the end of the month then there is every reason why his team will be nestling comfortably in mid-table before too long.
