Some people trust their first impressions about a person’s character because they believe these judgments are generally correct. Other people do not judge a person’s character quickly because they believe first impressions are often wrong. Compare these two attitudes. Which attitude do you agree with? Some people trust first impressions while others never judge a book by its cover. Actually, the way someone acts the first time you meet him or her can say a lot about this person. But, just as often, first impressions can be misleading.
On the one hand, a lot can be learned about a person based on the way they dress or look. For example, a person with tattoos and body piercings is likely to be very liberal in his/ her views. As well, I would never trust a lawyer who looks untidy with a wild hairstyle and a worried expression. This is why recruiters advise job seekers to be neatly dressed for a job interview because it will make a good impression on the interviews.
On the other hand, there are many times when first impressions leave the wrong impression. For example, a man dressed in a simpler T-shirt and jeans may be a world-class heart surgeon on vacation. People also tend to act differently when they are meeting new people for the first time. They do not reveal their true personality. For example, no one goes out on a first date wearing his or her everyday clothes. People are usually nervous when first meeting others and may act strangely or very differently than normal.
There are those who judge people by their first impressions and others who wait and see before making up their minds. Personally, I like to wait before I make up my mind. Although people try to be on their best behavior, some get nervous and cannot act like themselves when they are in a new place or meet new people. So we have to be considerate of this.
