11. 글로벌 리더는 세계를 한품에 껴안는 사람

1 뜻을 세우는 일은 나무를 심는 것과 같습니다. 집 뜰에 대추나무를 심으면 집 안에 대추가 열리고, 뒷동산에 사과나무를 심으면 뒷동산에 사과가 열립니다. 무슨 뜻을 어떤 곳에 심을 건지 생각해보십시오.

2 여러분이 어떤 뜻을 세우고 어디에 심느냐에 따라 서울의 대추나무도 아프리카의 사과나무도 될 수 있습니다. 물론 남태평양의 야자나무도 될 수 있습니다. 여러분이 심은 과일나무처럼 미래에 여러분의 뜻이 열매를 맺을 겁니다. 부디 그 열매가 어디에 맺히면 좋을지를 생각하면서 뜻을 세우십시오.

3 뜻을 세울 때는 마음을 넓게 갖고 반드시 전 세계를 다 돌아보십시오. 가난과 질병이 떠나지 않는 고통의 아프리카도 보고, 종교문제로 총부리를 겨누고 살아가는 이스라엘과 팔레스타인도 보고, 마약의 원료인 양귀비를 재배하며 근근이 먹고사는 아프가니스탄도 보십시오.

4 극도의 탐욕과 이기심으로 세계 경제를 구렁텅이로 빠뜨린 미국도 보고, 지진과 해일이 끊이지 않는 인도네시아도 보십시오. 그리고 그 나라들 사이에 자기 자신을 세워보십시오. 내가 어떤 나라, 어떤 사정에 적합할 것인지 생각해 보십시오. 어쩌면 새로운 종교분쟁이 일어나는 인도가 적합할지도 모릅니다. 어쩌면 가뭄과 기아로 허덕이는 르완다일 수도 있습니다.

5 뜻을 세우는 데 있어서 우리나라의 좁은 국토를 탓하는 어리석은 일을 범하지 않기를 바랍니다. 여러분이 하는 일에 따라서 우리나라는 얼마든지 넓어질 수 있고 어쩌면 국경이 아예 사라질 수도 있습니다. 우리가 아프리카에서 활약하면 아프리카는 우리나라가 됩니다.

6 그러니 세계를 무대로 놓고 할 일을 찾아보십시오. 아마도 지금까지 여러분이 꿈꿔온 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 일을 발견할 수 있을 것입니다. 한번뿐인 인생을 세계가 필요로 하는 일에 던지십시오. 모험을 하지 않고는 보물섬에 갈 수 없습니다. 부디 우리나라를 넘어서 세계를 무대로 뜻을 세우기 바랍니다.

7 1980년대에 나는 우리나라 대학생들을 일본과 미국으로 내보냈습니다. 하루가 멀다 하고 최루탄이 터지는 조국을 떠나 더 넓은 세상, 다양한 세계를 보여주기 위함이었습니다. 우물 안 개구리는 우물 밖에 더 넓은 세상이 있는 줄을 모릅니다.

8 나는 글로벌이라는 말도 모를 때 글로벌을 꿈꾼 사람입니다. 일본유학을 떠난 것도 더 넓은 세상을 보기 위해서였습니다. 광복 후 하이라얼에 있는 만주전업에 취직해서 몽골어와 중국어, 러시아어를 배우려 한 것도 세계인으로 살기 위해서였습니다. 나는 지금도 비행기를 타고 세계 곳곳을 돌아다닙니다. 하루에 한 나라씩 바쁘게 다녀도 전 세계를 다 돌아보려면 반 년이 넘게 걸립니다.

9 세계 어느 곳에나 사람들이 살고 있지만, 상황은 천차만별입니다. 밥을 지을 물이 없는 곳도 있고 물이 너무 많은 곳도 있습니다. 전기가 들어오지 않는 곳도 있고 만들어낸 전기를 미처 쓰지 못하는 나라도 있습니다. 무엇이든 한쪽은 넘치고 한쪽은 모자라는 일이 세상에는 흔합니다. 문제는 넘치고 모자라는 것들을 공평하게 나눠주는 역할을 할 사람이 적다는 겁니다.

10 원자재도 마찬가지입니다. 어느 나라에는 석탄이며 철광석이 산더미같이 쌓였습니다. 석탄을 캐러 땅속에 들어갈 필요도 없습니다. 그저 산더미같이 쌓인 석탄 더미에서 삽으로 떠내기만 하면 됩니다.

11 그렇지만 우리나라는 석탄과 철광석의 매장량이 턱없이 부족합니다. 무연탄이라도 좀 얻으려면 목숨을 내걸고 수십 미터씩 갱을 파고 땅 속으로 들어가야 합니다.

12 기술도 그렇습니다. 아프리카에는 바나나가 저절로 잘 자라는 곳이 많으니 바나나만 마음껏 먹어도 굶지는 않습니다. 그런데도 바나나 농장을 만들어 대량으로 바나나를 키우는 기술이 없어 굶습니다.

13 우리나라는 바나나에 적합한 기후가 아닌데도 훌륭하게 바나나를 재배합니다. 우리의 이런 기술은 아프리카의 빈곤을 해결하는 데 큰 힘이 될 수 있습니다. 우리의 옥수수 재배기술이 북한의 기아를 해결해준 것도 같은 이야기입니다.

14 요즘 유행하는 말 중에 글로벌 리더란 것이 있습니다. 영어를 능숙하게 배워서 글로벌 리더가 되고 싶다고 하지만 사실 글로벌 리더가 되는 길은 영어실력에 달린 것이 아닙니다.

15 영어는 의사소통의 도구일 뿐, 진정한 글로벌 리더는 세계를 자기 품에 껴안는 사람이어야 합니다. 세계 문제에는 전혀 관심이 없으면서 영어로 소통할 수 있다고 해서 글로벌 리더가 되는 것은 아닙니다.

16 글로벌 리더는 지구상의 모든 문제를 자신의 문제로 생각하고 그것을 해결하려는 개척자 정신을 지녀야 합니다. 안정적이고 고정적인 소득에 연연하거나 퇴직 후의 연금과 편안한 가정생활을 꿈꾸는 사람은 글로벌 리더가 될 수 없습니다. 앞날에 무엇이 기다릴지는 잘 모르지만 세계가 다 나의 나라이고 전 세계 인류가 모두 내 형제라는 의식이 있어야만 글로벌 리더가 될 수 있습니다.

17 형제란 무엇인가요? 하나님은 왜 우리에게 형제를 주었을까요? 형제는 전 세계의 인류를 상징합니다. 우리는 가정 안에서 형제를 사랑하는 경험을 통해 인류를 사랑하는 인류애, 동포애를 배웁니다.

18 형과 누나를 사랑하는 마음이 그렇게 넓어지는 것입니다. 서로 사랑을 나누는 가정의 모습은 인류가 서로 화합하는 형상과 같습니다. 비록 내가 배고프더라도 형제를 위해 밥을 남길 줄 아는 사랑이 형제애입니다. 글로벌 리더는 바로 인류를 상대로 형제애를 베푸는 사람입니다.

19 지금은 지구촌이란 말조차 옛말이 되었습니다. 지구는 이미 하나의 생활권입니다. 삶의 목표가 대학을 나와 월급을 많이 주는 회사에 취직해서 안정되게 살아가는 것이라면 강아지만한 성공을 거두게 됩니다. 하지만 아프리카의 난민구호에 목숨을 걸고 나선다면 호랑이만한 성공을 거둘 것입니다. 어떤 선택을 할 것인지는 각자의 마음에 달려있습니다.

20 나는 지금도 세계를 돌아다닙니다. 하루도 쉴 새가 없습니다. 세계는 마치 살아있는 생물처럼 끊임없이 변화하며 문제를 일으킵니다.나는 그런 문제들이 있는 어둡고 구석진 곳들을 찾아다닙니다. 내가 찾아가는 곳은 경치 좋고 편안한 곳이 아니지만 나는 어둡고 힘들고 외로운 곳에서 행복을 느낍니다.

21 나는 우리나라에서 진정한 의미의 글로벌 리더가 나오기를 소망합니다. 유엔을 이끌어가는 정치 리더가 나오기를 바라며 분쟁 지역의 소요사태를 막아주는 외교 리더가 나오기를 바랍니다. 길거리를 배회하다 죽어가는 가난한 자들을 돌보는 마더 테레사와 같은 구원의 리더가 나오기를 바랍니다.

22 또한 나처럼 사람들이 돌보지 않는 땅과 바다를 개척하여 새로운 세계를 넓혀가는 평화의 리더가 나오길 바랍니다. 꿈을 꾸고 뜻을 세우는 게 그 시작입니다. 부디 모험심과 개척정신을 갖고 남들이 꾸지 못한 꿈을 꾸고 의미있는 뜻을 세워 인류를 위한 글로벌 리더가 될 것을 간절히 바랍니다.

 11. グローバルリーダーは世界を懐に抱く人　

志を立てることは、木を植えることと同じです。家の庭にナツメの木を植えれば、家の庭にナツメが実り、裏山にリンゴの木を植えれば、裏山にリンゴが実ります。どのような志をどのような所に植えるのか考えてみてください。皆さんがどのような志を立ててどこに植えるのかによって、ソウルのナツメの木にも、アフリカのリンゴの木にもなれるのです。もちろん、南太平洋のヤシの木にもなることができます。皆さんが植えた果物の木のように、未来に皆さんの志が実を結ぶのです。どうか、その実がどこに実ればよいかを考えながら志を立ててください。

志を立てるときは、心を広く持ち、必ず全世界を見渡してみてください。貧困と疾病がなくならない苦痛のアフリカも見て、宗教問題で銃口を向けて生きているイスラエルとパレスチナも見て、麻薬の原料であるケシを栽培して辛うじて生きているアフガニスタンも見てください。極度の貧欲さと利己心によって世界経済を窮地に追いやったアメリカも見て、地震と津波が絶えないインドネシアも見てください。そして、その国々の間に、自分自身を立たせてみてください。自分がどの国、どの事情に適合するのかを考えてみてください。もしかすると、新しい宗教紛争が起きるインドが適合するかもしれません。もしかすると、干ばつと飢餓で苦しむルワンダかもしれません。

志を立てるにおいて、自国の狭い国土を怨むような愚かなことをしないでください。皆さんが行うことによって、自分の国はいくらでも広げることができ、ひょっとすると、国境が完全になくなるかもしれません。私たちがアフリカで活躍すれば、アフリカは自分たちの国になります。ですから、世界を舞台にしてやれることを探してみてください。おそらく、今まで皆さんが夢見てきたことよりも、はるかに多くのことを発見できるでしょう。一度だけの人生を世界が必要とすることに投じてください。冒険をしなければ宝島に行くことはできません。自分の国を超えて世界を舞台に志を立てることを願っています。

一九八〇年代に私は、韓国の大学生を日本とアメリカに送りました。毎日のように催涙弾が飛び交う祖国を離れ、より広い世界、多様な世界を見せるためでした。井の中の蛙は、井戸の外にもっと広い世界があることを知りません。

私は、グローバルという言葉も知らない時に、グローバルを夢見た人です。日本留学に出発したのも、より広い世界を見るためでした。かつて、日本留学から戻ったのち、中国の海拉爾に行ってモンゴル語と中国語、ロシア語を学ぼうと計画したのも、世界的に生きるためでした。私は、今も飛行機に乗って世界中を飛び回っています。一日に一ヵ国ずつ忙しく回っても、全世界を回ろうとすれば、半年以上かかります。

世界のどこにでも人が暮らしていますが、状況は千差万別です。ご飯を炊く水がない所もあり、水が多すぎる所もあります。電気が通っていない所もあり、つくった電気をいまだに使うことができない国もあります。何でもそうですが、一方にはあふれ、一方では足らない、そのようなことが世界にはたくさんあるのです。問題は、余っていたり、足らなかったりするものを、公平に分配する役割をする人が少ないということです。

資源も同様です。ある国には石炭や鉄鉱石が山のように積まれています。石炭を掘るために中に入っていく必要もありません。ただ山のように積み上がっている石炭の固まりから、スコップで掘り出せばよいのです。しかし、韓国には石炭も鉄鉱石もありません。無煙炭を掘り出そうとすれば、命がけで数十メートルも坑道を掘って土の中に入っていかなければなりません。技術もそうです。アフリカにはバナナが自然によく育つ所がたくさんあるので、バナナさえ食べていれば飢えることはありません。ところが、バナナ農場を造って大量にバナナを育てる技術がないために飢えているのです。韓国はバナナに適した気候ではないのに、立派にバナナを栽培しています。私たちのこのような技術は、アフリカの貧困を解決するのに大きな力になるのです。韓国のトウモロコシ栽培技術が、北朝鮮の飢餓の解決に役立ったことも同じ話です。

最近流行している言葉の中に「グローバルリーダー」という言葉があります。英語を流暢に話してグローバルリーダーになりたいと言いますが、実際にグローバルリーダーになる道は、英語の実力にかかっているのではありません。英語は意思疎通の道具にすぎず、本当のグローバルリーダーは世界を自分の懐に抱く人でなければなりません。世界の問題に全く関心がないのに、英語で意思疎通ができるからといってグローバルリーダーになることはできないのです。

グローバルリーダーは、地球上のあらゆる問題を自分の問題と考え、それを解決しようとする開拓者の精神を持たなければなりません。安定的で固定的な所得に執着したり、退職後の年金と平安な家庭生活を夢見たりする人は、グローバルリーダーになることができません。未来に何が待っているかよく分からなくても、世界がすべて自分の国であり、全世界の人類がすべて自分の兄弟だという意識があってこそ、グローバルリーダーになることができるのです。

兄弟とは何でしょうか。神様はなぜ、私たちに兄弟を下さったのでしょうか。兄弟は全世界の人類を象徴します。私たちは家庭の中で兄弟を愛する経験を通して、人類を愛する人類愛、同胞愛を学びます。兄と姉を愛する心がそのように広がるのです。お互いに愛を分かち合う家庭の姿は、人類が互いに融和する姿と同じです。たとえ自分が空腹でも、兄弟のためにご飯を残すことのできる愛が兄弟愛です。グローバルリーダーは、まさに人類を相手に兄弟愛を施す人です。

今は「地球村」という言葉さえ昔の言葉になりました。地球はすでに一つの生活圏です。人生の目標が、大学を出て月給をたくさんくれる会社に就職し、安定して生きていくことだとすれば、小犬くらいの成功を収めるようになります。しかし、アフリカの難民救護に命をかけて取り組めば、虎のような成功を収めるでしょう。どちらを選択するかは各自の心にかかっています。

私は今も世界を飛び回っています。一日も休む時間がありません。世界はまるで生きている生物のように絶えず変化し、問題を引き起こします。私は、そのような問題のある、暗くて奥まった所を訪ねて回ります。私が訪ねていく所は、景色がよくて楽な所ではありませんが、私は暗くて、大変で、孤独な所で幸福を感じます。
 
私は、皆さんの国から本当の意味のグローバルリーダーが出てくることを願います。国連を導いていく政治リーダーが出てくることを願い、紛争地域の争いを防いでくれる外交リーダーが出てくることを願います。道端を俳徊して死んでいく貧しい人たちの世話をするマザー・テレサのような救いのリーダーが出てくることを願います。また、私のように、人々が顧みることのない土地と海を開拓し、新しい世界を広げていく平和のリーダーが出てくることを願います。夢を持って志を立てることがそのスタートです。冒険心と開拓精神を持って、人が夢見ることのできないような夢を持ち、意味のある志を立てて、人類のためのグローバルリーダーとなることを切に願うものです。

11. Embrace the World
 
Setting a goal in life is similar to planting a tree. If you plant a jujube tree in the front yard of your home, you will have jujubes in your home. If you plant apple trees on the hill behind your home, then they will produce apples. Think carefully about your choice of goals and where you intend to plant them. Depending on the goal you choose and where you plant it, you can become a jujube tree in Seoul or an apple tree in Africa. Or you can become a palm tree in the South Pacific. The goal you plant will bear fruit in the future. Think carefully where the best place is to plant your goal so that it will bear the best fruit.
 
When you are setting your goal, be sure to consider the entire world. Consider Africa, which continues to suffer from poverty and disease. Consider Israel and Palestine, where people continue to aim their weapons at each other and fight over matters of religion. Consider Afghanistan, where people barely keep themselves alive by raising poppy plants used to make harmful drugs. Consider the United States, which has thrown the world’s economy into a pit with its extreme greed and selfishness.
 
Consider Indonesia, which suffers from continued earthquakes and tidal waves. Imagine yourself in the context of those countries, and think which country and which situation would be most appropriate for you. It may be that you are best suited to India, where a new religious conflict may erupt. Or it could be Rwanda, which languishes in drought and hunger.
 
In setting a goal, students shouldn’t be so foolish as to decide that because a country is small, like Korea, it isn’t worthy of your goals. Depending on what you do, there is no limit to how large a small country can become. Its national boundaries could even disappear. Whether you do good work on the large continent of Africa or in the small country of Korea, your goal should not be restricted by size. Your goals should be about where your talents can have the most impact.
 
So you should think of the world as your stage as you decide what you want to do in life. If you do, you will likely find many more things to do than what you were originally dreaming about. You have only one life to live, so use it to do something that the world needs. You cannot reach the hidden treasure on an island without adventure. Please think beyond your own country, and think of the world as your stage in setting your goal. 
 
During the 1980s, I sent many Korean university students to Japan and the United States. I wanted them to leave Korea, where teargas canisters were exploding almost daily, and let them see a wider world with greater variety. !e frog that lives at the bottom of a well does not realize that there is a bigger world outside the well.
 
I was thinking globally before that word even entered the Korean language. The reason I went to Japan to study was to see a wider world. The reason I planned to work for the Manchuria Electric Company in Hailar, China, and learn the Chinese, Russian, and Mongolian languages, even before Korea was liberated, was to enable me to live as a global citizen. Even now I travel by plane to many places in the world.
 
If I were to visit a different country every day, it would take more than six months to visit all of them. People live in many countries, and they all live in different circumstances. There are places where there is no water to cook rice with, while other places have too much water. Some places have no electricity, while some countries are not able to consume all the electricity that they produce. There are many examples of how something is lacking in one place but overabundant in another. The problem is there are not enough people focused on equalizing the distribution.
 
The same is true with raw materials. Some countries have an abundance of coal and iron ore stacked in piles. They don’t even need to dig into the earth. All they need to do is shovel the coal and iron ore from piles that are easily accessed. Korea, however, has a critical shortage of coal and iron ore reserves. To dig out anthracite coal we need to risk our lives to go thousands of feet underground.
 
Likewise with technology. Africa has many places where bananas grow naturally in abundance, and they could keep people from starving. But there is a lack of technology and lack of access to productive land, so not enough banana plantations are created. Korea’s climate is not suited for growing bananas, and yet we grow bananas. This technology in Korea could be very helpful in solving the problem of poverty in Africa. It is similar to the way that South Korean technology for planting corn has helped relieve starvation in North Korea.
 
The phrase global leader is now in vogue in Korea. People say they want to become fluent in English and become global leaders. Becoming a global leader, however, is not a matter of a person’s fluency in English. The ability to communicate in English is nothing more than a tool. A true global leader is someone who is able to embrace the world in his own bosom. A person who has no interest in the problems of the world cannot become a global leader, no matter how well he might communicate in English.
 
To be a global leader a person must think of the world’s problems as his own and have the pioneering spirit that is needed for finding difficult solutions. A person who is attached to a secure and fixed income, or dreams of having a pension after retirement and a comfortable family life, cannot be a global leader. To become a global leader a person must consider the whole world to be his country and all humanity to be his brothers and sisters and not be overly concerned that he does not know what the future may hold for him.
 
What are siblings? Why did God give us siblings? Siblings symbolize human beings around the world. The experience of loving our brothers and sisters in the family teaches us how to love our fellow countrymen and love humanity. Our love for our own siblings expands in this way. The family whose members love each other is a model of how humanity can live together in harmony. Love among siblings means that one sibling is willing to go hungry, if necessary, so that his brother or sister can eat. A global leader is someone who loves humanity as he loves his own family.
 
It has been awhile since we first heard the phrase global village. Yet the earth has always been a single community. If a person’s goal in life is to graduate from a university, get a job with a company that will pay him a high salary, and lead a secure life, then that person will have the success of a puppy. But if he dedicates his life to helping refugees in Africa, he will have the success of a lion. The course that is chosen depends on the heart of the individual. 
 
Even at the age of ninety, I continue to travel around the world. I refuse to rest from my mission. !e world is like a living organism in that it is always changing. New problems are always arising. I go to the dark corners of the world where these problems exist. These are not the places with beautiful views or comfortable amenities, but I feel happy in places that are dark, difficult, and lonely because that is where I’m fulfilling my mission, my purpose, my goals.
 
My hope is that Korea will produce global leaders in the true sense. I hope to see more political leaders who will lead the United Nations to fulfill its purpose and more diplomatic leaders who will stop the fighting in areas of conflict. I hope to see someone like Mother Teresa who will take care of those wandering and dying on the streets. I hope to see peace leaders who will take on my mission of pioneering new solutions from the land and sea.
 
The starting point is to have a dream and a goal. Please have an adventurous and pioneering spirit. Dream dreams that others dare not imagine. Set goals for yourselves that have meaning, and become global leaders who will bring benefit to humankind.
