How To Throw A Cast Net (with or without using your mouth)
in this video
you can learn how to throw a ten foot cast net
but more importantly
you're gonna learn how to fix issues as you have them
because not everybody throws a perfect cast every every time
and in fact
most people do not so
we're going to teach you how to know where the different parts of the nets end up
and we're going to do so by first of all having a runway
we have a nice duct-tape front plate down here
but the most important factors we've flagged
0:22
the net so we have some different flags on the actual net
so that when we do throw it we'll be able to see exactly where the different parts of the net end up so at the very end
you'll be able to know again if you are having an issue on one side versus the other top or bottom
you'll be able to know exactly where in your and your loading of the net
the issues occurring so that way on your next cast you can
you can fix the proper sections instead of just having to guess at it so
anyhow let's just show you how to load it real quickly and then we're gonna gonna cast
and then analyze the actual cast at the very end
all right so clearing The Braille Line
the first step before you do anything is we want to make sure there's no snags
than that because what we have will have this
that's called a Braille line and that's these these thick lines that go
1:01
from the actual swivel all the way down
1:03
to the weights sometimes it'll it'll
1:05
some other parts of the weights will get
1:07
wrapped around a Braille line and
1:09
that'll completely ruin the cast so want
1:11
to make sure that we get those out so
1:12
the first step always hold it about
1:14
maybe chest chest high or so and then
1:17
just grab just a section a small section
1:19
just slowly start pulling out just
1:21
pulling it one section at a time and
1:23
what you need to see is two lines going
1:25
out at once so as you can see down here
1:28
this is on my side you can see there's a
1:29
cluster so we want to clear that out
1:31
that means that there was some some part
1:33
of the Braille line that was not not
1:36
properly set in there so I want to clear
1:38
that out and then again do it over again
1:39
so we we clear that one so far looks
1:44
like we have one other one down here you
1:46
can see this wasn't coming out perfect
1:48
so we just want to just lift it up and I
1:50
just lift lift those weights outside the
1:52
Braille line and that'll clear it so
1:53
that should be good we now have a clear
1:56
net alright so next step after you just
Loading The Line
1:59
ensure there's no tangles of the net is
2:00
to load up all the line and your
2:02
backhand my preference is to start with
2:04
my with my right and so my left hand is
2:06
the is the follow-through hand if you
2:07
will so I loop have all the the ropes
2:09
looped in there and I have about a foot
2:11
foot and a half diameter size loop
2:13
doesn't matter what size it it just has
2:15
to be lower than the waist level
2:18
so with this 10 foot net most people
2:20
prefer to grab right below the horn I
2:22
usually grab it with about a foot or so
2:24
section again there's no perfect way
2:26
doesn't really matter because the more
2:27
important side is the more important
2:29
part of the the actual hold is down here
2:32
at the last one so loop it over one time
2:35
and I always want to make sure to be a
2:37
little bit a little bit lower than waist
2:40
level is my preference some people do
2:42
right at waist level some people do
2:43
further down to cast further the further
2:45
you want to cast the further down you
2:46
want to hold it but in general I always
2:49
do just just barely below waist level
2:51
alright and I mentioned before that I
Split The Net
2:53
prefer to have this about a foot or so
2:55
between the the horn and my in my hand
2:58
on the on the first coil and the reason
3:00
is because I always want the the coils
3:03
of both the rope and the line to never
3:05
be lower than the actual than the actual
3:08
weights so if I did have this up to my
3:10
up to the braid then this loop would
3:13
then be really touching the weights and
3:15
I don't want that to happen so now that
3:16
we again have the proper hold with our
3:19
back hand now it's time to actually load
3:21
the net so again I've already I've
3:23
already ensured that we don't have any
3:24
any coils so what I'm what I do is I
3:27
split the net into two it directly in
3:29
the half and so the first half I
3:31
actually have you know that'll be in my
3:33
in my right hand in my front my front
3:35
hand you might be wondering what these
3:36
colors are so the pink this is the part
3:39
of the net that is going to be directly
3:40
away from me again like it's on my belt
3:42
but directly opposite of me and the
3:44
green one which is here on the inside
3:46
towards me this is gonna be the part of
3:48
the net that is right right on my belt
3:49
loop so that the you know between the
3:53
red and the green on the right side
3:54
that's gonna be everything that's in my
3:56
right hand and then everything from the
3:58
left of this direct line is going to be
4:00
the the net that's in my in my left hand
4:02
and my follow up hand that way when we
4:05
do throw it we'll be able to see exactly
4:07
where the net ends up so that if we do
4:08
have issues we can be able to determine
4:10
you know if it's something on our front
4:12
hand our back hand or somewhere in
4:14
between
4:15
alright now that the net is split in two
Final Load
4:17
we can go ahead and lift it up we're
4:18
ready to do the final load and so I
4:20
always put my elbow in between in
4:22
between the two sections so this is the
4:24
part that goes in my lead hand this
4:25
bottom part the back part is what
4:27
Tang's and is supported by my backhand
4:30
to this point I grab the the line that's
4:32
closest to me and you have two options
4:34
here you can either put this line right
4:36
in your mouth just this is what most
4:38
people do it's the standard way or you
4:40
can just sing it over your back shoulder
4:42
and just do it do two slings so I'll
4:44
just show you quickly that the second
4:46
way you know that the line of your
4:48
shoulder the benefit of doing that is
4:50
you don't get have all the mud and in a
4:52
possibly jellyfish stuff that gets in
4:53
your mouth it's just little bit cleaner
4:55
the bad part about putting it on your
4:56
back is that you're going to be
4:58
completely soaked after one cast this
5:00
may be to get my whole shirt would now
5:01
be covered with water but hopefully
5:03
you're in warm weather so you don't care
5:05
so anyhow I'll just show you just how to
5:08
hold it with the the net over your back
5:10
I've got one twist here so I was just
5:12
getting put it on the back and then put
5:14
my my line my hand up underneath the the
5:17
actual the actual net material and just
5:20
pull it down
5:21
and that's it and I and I let the line
5:23
slip down and I always put my pinky
5:26
around the the main line I'll explain on
5:29
the on the second try so this is exactly
5:32
how I hold I get the two hands about ten
5:33
inches apart keep them the same height
5:35
throughout the swing you know and just
5:37
let it rock and so I'll actually show
5:39
you I'll go ahead and show you that the
5:41
mouth in section because as far as the
5:42
cast they're the exact same you don't do
5:44
anything different so let's go ahead and
5:46
I'll show you with the the teeth in
5:48
method and then we'll go ahead and cast
5:50
it so again I grab the line closest to
5:52
me I'm going to put it in my teeth in
5:54
between the two you don't want this led
5:56
to get in your mouth so don't don't bite
5:57
onto the lead I'm gonna put put my mouth
5:59
right on there the rope part put my hand
6:02
of underneath ten inches from my other
6:05
hand and I'm gonna let it votes drop I'm
6:08
gonna let the lead line slide up through
6:10
my fingers and then I'm gonna flip my
6:13
pinky around it it's now ready to go so
6:17
so as far as the cast I'm gonna keep my
6:20
hands again about ten inches apart the
6:22
last thing I let go of I'm doing the
6:24
cast the hands were to go together the
6:26
entire way and the last thing I let go
6:28
is going to be this little pinky section
6:30
again just a half second later but that
6:33
doesn't make a difference so with that
6:34
said let's go ahead and show you the
6:36
casting bar so as far as actually
Casting Bar
6:38
casting into what you want to do is you
6:39
just want to get just just a good half
6:41
Cass going always give my shoulder
6:43
facing the target area so just again my
6:46
I want to cast down that way I'm gonna
6:48
put this the the part in my mouth here
6:50
this is the piece that goes in my mouth
6:51
but yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna start up
6:52
high go back and then just and just
6:55
follow-through up so your your final
6:56
cast you want to be going from from down
6:59
and then basically lifting up and then
7:01
your hands need to be going together the
7:03
same the same time I keep my hands the
7:05
same height and then let them go at the
7:08
same like velocity on both sides so
7:10
let's go ahead and just give it a give
7:12
it a whirl all right so now it's time to
Results
7:19
analyze results I just threw this cast
7:21
and as you can see we have the runway
7:23
I'm not quite dead center I'm a little
7:25
bit over here to that to the right but
7:26
but close enough I'm gonna blame it on
7:28
the wind but it was really it was really
7:30
my fault but more importantly though we
7:32
wanted to see exactly how the net ends
7:34
up on the ground or really in the water
7:36
so this uh this this green section this
7:39
was the part that was that was for
7:40
basically right right at my belt clip
7:42
where it was closest to me and then the
7:44
pink one at the very far end this was
7:46
the part that was furthest away from me
7:48
so everything on this side on this side
7:50
of that line was in my front hand and
7:53
everything on the on the far end this is
7:55
the the far the upper left quadrant was
7:58
in my in my back hand in my left hand so
8:01
you see basically I just threw it and
8:02
everything that was closest to me again
8:05
this is the part that was closest of me
8:06
is on this Ridge and everything further
8:08
away is over there so if I did have an
8:10
issue say I had an issue on this bottom
8:12
bottom right section the problem was
8:15
somewhere in my leading hand and the
8:17
opposite is true if there was if I was
8:19
having trouble opening the top quadrant
8:22
that means that there was a snag or some
8:23
sort of hang-up in my in my back end of
8:26
my left hand so I just wanted to know
8:27
just how did that ends up on the on the
8:29
water that way if you are not throwing
8:32
perfect pancakes every time not perfect
8:34
perfect round cast you can get a better
8:36
idea of exactly where the issue is and
8:38
fix it in the next cast hopefully this
8:40
helps let's do if you have any questions
8:42
otherwise we'll see you on the next
