Second, according to the will of Master Yongseong, a new national fortune will open for the Republic of Korea starting in 2025. Just last year, we thought the country might collapse rather than see its fortune open, but after many twists and turns, a new dawn is beginning to shine. Of course, looking at the external environment, nothing seems favorable - whether it’s U.S. tariff policies, U.S.-China conflicts, inter-Korean relations, or the economic situation. However, even under Japanese colonial rule, we dreamed of the March 1st Independence Movement and declared independence. We also established a provisional government in those difficult circumstances. Compared to then, we now have so much more. So when the new government takes office, rather than excluding and purging, we should embrace and join forces to create a new Republic of Korea. 둘째, 용성조사님의 유훈에 의하면 2025년부터 대한민국에 새로운 국운이 열린다고 합니다. 작년만 해도 국운이 열리기는커녕 망할지도 모르겠다고 생각했었는데, 우여곡절을 겪고 이제 새로운 서광이 비치기 시작합니다. 물론 외부 환경을 보면, 미국의 관세 정책이나 미·중 갈등이나 남북 관계나 경제 상황이나 어느 것 하나 좋아 보이지는 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 일제 식민지 치하에서도 3·1 독립운동의 꿈을 꾸고 독립 선언을 했습니다. 또한 그 어려운 상황에서도 임시 정부를 세웠습니다. 그때에 비하면 지금 우리는 많은 것을 가지고 있습니다. 그러니 이제 새로운 정부가 들어서면 너무 배제하고 척결하기보다는 포용하고 힘을 합해서 대한민국을 새롭게 만들어가야 합니다.

As a New National Fortune Opens in 2025, What Kind of Prayer Should We Offer?

First and foremost, we must seize this opportunity to establish a peace system on the Korean Peninsula to prevent war. Economic difficulties may be challenging at the time, but overcoming them can sometimes strengthen our economic constitution. In our history, experiencing the IMF crisis was a great pain for us, but by overcoming it, we were able to rise as today’s Republic of Korea. In that sense, we need to break through the walls of our preconceptions and actively improve inter-Korean relations. Even though we fought a war in the past, and even though we always keep unification in mind because we were once one, the reality is that we are now two separate states in a hostile relationship. We must accept this reality and first transform these two hostile states into two friendly states. Then we should make them two cooperating states, and on that basis, seek a path toward becoming one. We have no choice but to adopt such realistic policies. Building a successful Republic of Korea is not only important for us but also provides tremendous hope for small nations and peoples around the world. 새로운 국운이 열리는 2025년, 우리는 어떤 기도를 해야 할까요? 우선 한반도에 전쟁이 없도록 평화 체제를 구축하는 일을 이번 기회에 꼭 만들어야 합니다. 경제적인 난관도 당시에는 어렵지만, 그 난관을 극복하면 경제적 체질이 더 강해질 때도 있습니다. 우리 역사 속에서도 IMF를 겪은 것이 우리에게 큰 고통이었지만 우리는 그것을 극복하면서 오늘날 대한민국으로 일어설 수 있었던 것입니다. 그런 면에서 우리가 그동안 가져왔던 관념의 벽을 뛰어 넘어서 남북 관계도 적극적으로 개선해 나가야 합니다. 과거에 전쟁까지 치른 관계였다 하더라도, 또한 과거에 우리가 하나였기 때문에 통일을 늘 염두에 두고 있다 하더라도, 현재는 두 개의 국가가 되어 있고 적대적인 관계에 놓여 있는 것이 현실입니다. 이 현실을 받아들여서 적대적 두 개의 국가를 우호적인 두 개의 국가로 먼저 만들어야 합니다. 그다음에 협력하는 두 개의 국가로 만들고, 그 위에서 하나로 나아가는 길을 모색해야 합니다. 이렇게 현실적인 정책을 쓸 수밖에 없습니다. 대한민국을 잘 만드는 것은 우리에게만 중요한 것이 아니라 전 세계에 작은 민족, 작은 나라들에게도 엄청난 희망이 되고 있습니다.

In that sense, I hope you all will have the great aspiration to become not only the hope of our people but also the hope of humanity. Rather than just thinking about how to make money by selling products to other countries using the Korean Wave’s popularity, we should also help the poor in those countries, support agricultural and women’s education, enhance their human rights, and support their democratic development. It is very necessary to create a country where people from struggling nations remember Korea as a place that helped them. Young people should not just complain or feel discouraged while being complacent with the present. It is necessary to have great aspirations – improving inter-Korean relations, developing North Korea’s economy through inter-Korean economic cooperation, and going out to Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and other countries around the world to help them. In that regard, I hope Jungto Society’s activities will now go beyond the boundaries of Jungto Society to help the difficulties of the people through the expansion of Happiness School, and to help not only Korean Buddhists but also Buddhists in Southeast Asia with a bigger heart. I hope this 9th 100-Day Prayer period will be a time to embrace such hope. 그런 의미에서 여러분 모두 우리 국민의 희망뿐만 아니라 인류의 희망이 되겠다는 큰 뜻을 가졌으면 좋겠습니다. 한류가 유행한다고 해서 그것을 이용해 다른 나라에 물건을 팔아 어떻게 돈을 벌까 하는 궁리만 하지 말고, 그 나라의 가난한 사람들을 돕고, 농업 교육과 여성 교육을 지원하고, 그들의 인권을 신장하고 민주주의 발전을 위해 지원하는 일도 해 나가야 합니다. 그래서 어렵게 사는 나라 사람들이 한국이라고 하면 ‘은혜를 입었다.’ 하고 기억하게 되는 나라를 만들어 가는 것이 매우 필요합니다. 젊은이들은 지금에 안주해서 불평불만만 하거나 의기소침해 있으면 안 됩니다. 남북 관계를 개선하고, 남북 간의 경제 협력을 통해서 북한 경제를 발전시키고, 동남아시아와 서남아시아 등 세계 각국에 진출해서 그들을 돕는 등 이렇게 큰 뜻을 품는 것이 필요합니다. 그런 면에서 정토회의 활동도 이제는 정토회라는 울타리에서 벗어나 국민들의 어려움을 돕는 행복학교의 확산이라든지, 한국 불교뿐만 아니라 동남아시아의 불교인들을 돕는 쪽으로 조금 더 큰 마음을 내어보면 좋겠습니다. 그런 희망을 품는 9차 백일기도 기간이 되면 좋겠습니다.
