Raphael and Tobias in the Bible
Through the Lens of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Training
The Teacher Shows the Way,
and Nature Reveals Itself
---
I am preparing to depart on September 16 for the 2026 seminar in the United States.
As I consider what I should teach and share with the American practitioners, the story of the Archangel Raphael and Tobias in the biblical Book of Tobit comes to mind.
I would like to reflect on this story in connection with the principles of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
This story is more than a religious account or a mysterious record of healing.
It clearly illustrates the connection among technique, philosophy, and healing pursued in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu. It also shows the relationship between teacher and student, and how a teaching can lead to a transformation of consciousness and life.
Therefore, I would like to introduce the story from the Book of Tobit and share my thoughts on the meaning contained within it.
Although this story is recorded in the Bible, its teachings are not confined to one religion.
Buddhist scriptures, the sacred texts of other religions, and ancient stories from both East and West contain many similar accounts. A divine being or teacher appears in the form of an ordinary person, guides someone along the path, helps that person recognize wisdom already present in nature, and enables the individual to overcome difficulties through personal practice.
The expressions and characters may differ, but the fundamental principles remain unchanged.
A teacher does not create the answer for the student.
The teacher shows the way and helps the student awaken.
The student must then put the teaching into practice and transform their own life.
Such stories have been repeated across different periods, regions, and religions because the fundamental problems human beings face—and the process through which they awaken—are not very different.
Therefore, my purpose in introducing the Book of Tobit is not to explain the doctrine of a particular religion or encourage anyone to accept a specific faith.
It is to discover the universal principles within the story and consider how they are connected to Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu training and to the practical realities of our lives.
Religions may differ, and each may use different languages and expressions.
Nevertheless, many fundamental teachings share the same purpose: guiding human beings toward the right path and helping their consciousness grow.
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu seeks to apply these shared principles to contemporary life through the integrated training of technique, philosophy, and healing.

The Archangel Raphael and Tobias in the Book of Tobit
Many stories are forgotten and disappear as time passes. Others continue to be passed down, yet because they are so ancient, people often dismiss them as legends or mysterious tales.
However, the most fundamental principles of human life remain unchanged, whether in ancient times or today. They are timeless and universal.
If we can understand and practice these principles, the way we see and accept the world changes completely.
We can live more efficiently, practically, and realistically while reducing the time and effort we waste on unnecessary things.
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu published the English-language book Searching for the Forgotten Half in Martial Arts and continues to discuss the Dongyi martial traditions of our ancestors. The purpose is not simply to reproduce the past exactly as it was.
The purpose is to transform established consciousness, expand the framework of our thinking, and cultivate our present lives more correctly and meaningfully.
We seek to understand the past, discover the principles contained within it, and apply them through a new training system suited to the modern world.
This is also why new concepts and terminology continue to emerge through the process of creating and transmitting Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
We do not study the past in order to return to the past. We study it to discover the principles hidden within it and apply them to our lives today.
The story of Raphael and Tobias may also sound like a mysterious religious tale. However, it is understood very differently by those who have personally experienced similar principles.
When we do not understand, everything appears mysterious or accidental. Once we understand the principle and experience it directly, we no longer regard it as mere mystery.
I believe that nothing in this world happens as a completely meaningless coincidence. What we call coincidence may be necessity whose causes and connections have not yet been discovered.
Once we know, our consciousness changes.
When consciousness changes, our patterns of thought change.
When our thoughts change, our actions change.
When our actions change, our lives eventually change.
From this perspective, I would like to examine the story of Raphael and Tobias and reflect on its teachings before the seminar in the United States.
1. The Encounter
God sent Raphael in human form. Tobias accepted him as a traveling companion without knowing that he was an angel.
Precious teachings and assistance do not always arrive in extraordinary or mysterious forms.
Sometimes they come through an ordinary person or an event that appears to be coincidental.
There is no true coincidence in this world.
Every coincidence is simply necessity disguised as coincidence.
However, those who are unprepared may encounter such an opportunity and still fail to recognize its meaning.
What matters is not only what has appeared before me, but whether I am prepared to recognize it.
2. The Journey and the Teaching
Raphael walked with Tobias and protected him throughout the journey. He also taught him about a healing substance already present in nature and how it could be used.
Raphael did not create something that had never existed. He taught Tobias to discover and use what already existed in nature but remained unknown to him.
This is connected to the principle of Follow the Energy in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu. Its foundation is Wave Movement—the practice of sensing and following the waves of nature.
A teacher does not forcibly place something inside a student that is not already there. The teacher guides the student to discover the potential already within and the principles already present in nature.
A teacher does not create the path. The teacher helps the student see the path that already exists.
3. The Practice of Healing
After returning home, Tobias personally carried out what Raphael had taught him. As a result, his father Tobit, who had been unable to see, regained his sight.
The important point is that Raphael did not do everything for Tobias.
Raphael taught him the principles and the method. Tobias understood, trusted, and practiced the teaching with his own hands.
No matter how excellent a teaching may be, listening alone does not create change. Real transformation begins only when the teaching is experienced and practiced through one’s own body and mind.
However, the practice of healing described here does not merely mean curing an injured or diseased part of the body.
When a person understands the principles, laws, and truths of nature and guides their life in the right direction, healing naturally follows in proportion to the effort and practice that person has made.
Healing in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu goes beyond the role of a healer or physician who treats another person’s pain.
It is a process of living correctly according to the principles of nature, examining one’s thoughts, words, and actions, reducing greed, anger, and foolishness, and practicing love and consideration toward one’s family and the people nearby.
As much as one has worked,
as much love as one has accumulated,
and as much as one has practiced a righteous life,
health and happiness may follow as secondary results.
Therefore, healing is neither the direct objective of training nor a special ability to be displayed before others. It is a result that naturally emerges through the process of walking the right path and transforming oneself.
What matters is not attachment to the result called healing. What matters is creating within oneself the conditions through which healing may naturally follow.
Based on Even Breathing and Normal Mind, we must continually examine and reflect upon our words, thoughts, and actions in daily life.
The foundations of this reflection are:
Reflection · Resolution · Gratitude
Reflection means looking honestly at one’s mistakes.
Resolution means establishing the will to live correctly.
Gratitude means valuing and accepting everything one has been given.
Before trying to heal someone far away, we must first practice love and consideration toward our closest family members and uphold what is right in everyday life.
Through this process, consciousness changes.
When consciousness changes, thought patterns change. When thought patterns change, our actions and the direction of our lives also change.
The true meaning of healing in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not the pursuit of mysterious phenomena. It must remain thoroughly practical.
Its meaning lies in understanding the principles of nature, applying them to the realities of one’s life, and living in a healthier, happier, and more righteous way.
The capacity for healing is not something that another person can unilaterally give us or something we can passively receive.
It is a result that naturally follows in proportion to the effort and practice each person has made while transforming their own life in the right direction.
Healing is not the goal.
It is a bonus that follows when we walk the right path—a result derived from right training and right living.
4. The Unveiling
When everything was complete, Raphael revealed that he was an angel sent by God to help them.
At the beginning of the journey, Tobias did not know Raphael’s true identity. Only after walking with him, listening to his teaching, and putting it into practice did Tobias understand the meaning of the being who had accompanied him.
Training is the same.
At first, it is difficult to understand fully the words of a teacher or the meaning of training. However, after walking together for a long time and repeatedly experiencing the practice, meanings that were invisible at the beginning gradually reveal themselves.
We cannot know every answer from the beginning.
Some things become known only after we have walked the path and experienced them directly.
That is awakening.
That is practice within human life.

The Teaching Conveyed by This Story
What matters in this story is not simply a miracle or mysterious healing.
Raphael showed the way.
Tobias understood the teaching and practiced it himself.
This is also connected to Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu training.
A teacher can show the path, but the student must personally observe, feel, follow, and embody it.
This is Self-Acquirement—the process of discovering, embodying, and making the teaching one’s own.
However, acquiring something by oneself does not mean acting according to personal thoughts without any principles.
The principles, laws, and truths of nature must form the foundation. Only then can we gain the direction and momentum necessary to move forward.
This is Self-Magnetization—the state of receiving the power and direction of nature and becoming capable of moving forward by oneself.
The following are fundamental concepts of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu training:
The energy of nature is alive.
We understand it as possessing consciousness.
Even our body and our energy are not truly our personal possessions.
Each practitioner must gradually understand these three principles through personal experience.
They cannot be fully understood through intellectual knowledge alone. They can be understood only through the process of direct experience—feeling and following.
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, the energy of nature is understood as the waves of nature, and its foundation is love.
Therefore, Wave Movement is the basic practice that connects body and mind in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
It also forms the foundation of two-sword training through KiMu practice and acupuncture training through Vipassana-Acupuncture Practice, also known as Shinchim Practice.
Healing in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not the result of accumulating a large amount of knowledge received passively from the outside.
Healing and the transformation of life begin only when correct teaching leads to personal understanding and practice.
Ultimately, what Raphael gave Tobias was not merely a method of treatment.
It was the vision to discover what already exists in nature,
the consciousness to understand its meaning,
and the wisdom to put it into practice correctly.
The teaching shows the way.
Practice makes that path one’s life.
During our lifetime, we live only by what we ourselves have done, by the effort we have made, by how deeply our roots have grown, and by the measure of love we have cultivated.
We live through the blessings we have personally created and accumulated. When our life comes to an end, we return once again to nature.
