PORTFOLIO REVIEW REQUIREMENTS
Your portfolio and sketchbook gives you an opportunity to display your talent and potential, and provides us with an insight into your ability to follow instructions, and your organization and problem-solving skills.
Following are the portfolio guidelines and criteria, which will be used to evaluate your portfolio.
Sketchbook Guidelines
- Sketchbooks should contain a variety of studies (life, photo, people, animals, scenery)
- Sketchbooks should demonstrate an exploration of visual ideas (ie. a variety of sketches on a theme or through to a concept)
- Sketches may be in a sketchbook or a presentation folder or display book
- Sketches may be included in an appropriately labelled section of your portfolio
- Photocopied sketches are acceptable
- Loose paper sketches are not acceptable
- Acceptance is not given without a sketchbook
Portfolio Presentation Guidelines
- The portfolio CANNOT exceed 17" in width and 28" in length
- Each piece of work in the portfolio should also be clearly labelled with relevant information including dimensions, media, date of completion and substrate (i.e. paper, canvas, masonite, etc.)
- Include a short note, or mini-rationale of why the work was created
- For digital work, list the software used in its creation
- Do not include framed pieces in your portfolio
- Unless properly mounted, loose pieces of work are not acceptable
- Your portfolio should be securely enclosed in a case clearly labelled with your full name, student number, home phone number and mailing address
Portfolio Content Guidelines
- Your portfolio should contain a minimum of 15 to 20 samples of work, and must showcase a range of media and approaches
- Options might include: oil, acrylic, stipple, watercolour, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil drawings, coloured pencil, pastels, digital work, photography, printmaking – Digital Work is a MUST
- At least one piece in your portfolio must include an example of word(s) and image(s) which communicate a message (ie. a poster or advertisement)
- Large format work, such as large paintings, sculpture, furniture or clothing should be photographed and included in the portfolio
- Other items may include examples of logos, corporate identity work, brochures, posters or advertisements
- Websites or other digital work can be printed and attached – CD are not accepted
- At least one finished piece in your portfolio must include all preliminary work (ie. research, roughs, thumbnails) - this would be best presented on an accompanying page to the finished piece
- Special assignment to be included in your portfolio:
Design a magazine ad for the School of Design, Graphic Design program at George Brown College:
- Your ad should reflect the program offerings at the School of Design NOT the entire College
- The colours you choose should be appropriate for the college
- Include all preliminary work on an accompanying page
- The Add must only be in Digital
ITEMS TO BRING WITH YOU TO THE INTERVIEW
A drawing pencil, and eraser and a ball point pen.
FEES
There is a non-refundable $50.00 fee for the portfolio evaluation, payable by cash ONLY. Exact change is required. PLEASE NOTE: We do not take CHEQUE or money orders.
RESULTS
You will have one hour to complete the assignment. During this time your portfolio will be evaluated and returned to you. Your results will be emailed to you within a week of your evaluation date. Please ensure you provide the correct email address. You will receive a letter confirming your results in the mail within one to two weeks of receiving your results via email. You MUST confirm your acceptance on your OCAS account to reserve a spot in the program.
AVAILABLE PORTFOLIO SESSIONS:
Please note: You can only set up a portfolio interview once you have met our initial application process and have received a divisional select letter informing you of available dates and times (as below) to come in for an interview. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before as late admits are not permitted and will have to re-schedule for another session.

You can still apply AFTER February 1, 2011. We will be taking applications until the program is full.
We will post more sessions every month. If the date you are given is full please check back for new dates.
Please Note: Once you book a session you cannot change the date. Portfolio dates can only be changed through the department and require approval. Approval is ONLY given for extenuating circumstances.
You will receive a confirmation on the screen once you have booked your session. You will not receive an email.
If you live 200 KM or more away from the college you can mail in your portfolio to:

You must include the magazine assignment and a letter of intent explaining:
- Why you would like to attend George Brown College for your Graphic Design education
- Why you would make a good Graphic Designer and what Graphic Design means to you
If you would like to have your portfolio sent back please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for us to return your portfolio to you. The college is not responsible for lost or stolen portfolios sent and received by mail or courier and it is the responsibility of the student to track the portfolio's delivery.
You must confirm your attendance by booking your portfolio session on-line. Please include your George Brown College student ID and phone number when booking your session. Your George Brown College student ID begins with 100. Please remember that if you miss or cancel your portfolio session you will be delaying your acceptance into the program. Be prepared to leave your portfolio and prepare your writing sample.
If you are using a "hotmail" account please be aware that e-mails sent to you from the School of Design may not show up or are sent into your "junk mail" folder. If you have an alternative e-mail account please utilize it.
Please bring your interview fee of $50.00 payable by cash ONLY. Exact change is required. We DO NOT TAKE CHEQUES or MONEY ORDERS. |
