Occupational Hazard   직업 재해

글을 다루는 것이 내 직업입니다.

My occupation is words.

글을 쓸 때든 편집할 때든 나는

낱말들을 사용해서 생각을 전달하여

독자들이 이해할 수 있게 합니다.

Whether I am writing or editing,

I am using words to convey ideas

so that readers can understand.

나는 다른 사람들의 글에서 잘못된 것을 찾아낼 수 있고

(나 자신의 것은 못 볼 때도 있지만)

어떻게 고쳐야 할지를 생각합니다.

I can usually see what’s wrong with someone else’s writing

(though sometimes not with my own)

and figure out how to fix it.

편집인으로서

나는 흠잡는 일을 하여 급료를 받습니다.

As an editor,

I am paid for being critical.

내가 하는 일은 잘못 사용된 어휘를 찾아내는 것입니다.

My job is to see

what’s wrong with the way words are used.

그런데 이러한 능력이 내 개인생활에도 영향을 미쳐

항상 잘못된 것을 찾다보니

이제는 능력이 장애가 되어 버렸습니다.

This ability becomes a disability

when I carry it over into my personal life

and always look for what is wrong.

잘못된 것에 치중하다 보면 잘된 것 모두를 놓치게 됩니다.

Focusing on what’s wrong

can cause us to miss everything that’s good.

바울사도에게는

빌립보 교회의 문제점에 대해 관심을 기울일 만한 이유가 있었습니다.

The apostle Paul had reason

to focus on what was wrong in the Philippian church.

바울에게 고통을 더 주기 위한 이기적인 마음에서

복음을 전파한 사람들이 있었던 것입니다(빌 1:16).

Certain people were preaching the gospel

out of selfish ambition to add to Paul’s suffering.

그러나 그는 부정적인 면에 집중하기 보다는

예수 그리스도가 전파된다는(18절)

긍정적인 면을 보고 그것을 기뻐하였습니다.

But instead of concentrating on the negative,

he chose to look at the positive and rejoice in it:

Jesus Christ was being preached.

하나님께서는 우리가 선과 악을 가려 분별할 수 있기를 원하십니다.

그러나 하나님은 우리가 잘못된 것에 몰두한 나머지

비판적으로 되거나 실망하게 되는 것을 원치 않으십니다.

God wants us to be discerning

—we need to know good from bad

—but He doesn’t want us to focus on the bad

and become critical or discouraged.

비록 최상이 아닌 상황에서도

(바울은 감옥에서 편지를 쓰고 있었습니다)

우리는 좋은 점을 발견할 수 있습니다.

어려울 때에도 하나님께서 변함없이 역사하고 계시기 때문입니다

Even in circumstances that are less than ideal

(Paul was writing from prison),

we can fin-d something good

because in times of trouble God is still at work

Philippians 빌립보서 1:12-18  

[빌] 1:12	형제들아 내가 당한 일이 도리어 복음 전파에 진전이 된 줄을 너희가 알기를 원하노라 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
[빌] 1:13	이러므로 나의 매임이 그리스도 안에서 모든 시위대 안과 그 밖의 모든 사람에게 나타났으니 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
[빌] 1:14	형제 중 다수가 나의 매임으로 말미암아 주 안에서 신뢰함으로 겁 없이 하나님의 말씀을 더욱 담대히 전하게 되었느니라 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
[빌] 1:15	어떤 이들은 투기와 분쟁으로, 어떤 이들은 착한 뜻으로 그리스도를 전파하나니 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
[빌] 1:16	이들은 내가 복음을 변증하기 위하여 세우심을 받은 줄 알고 사랑으로 하나 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
[빌] 1:17	그들은 나의 매임에 괴로움을 더하게 할 줄로 생각하여 순수하지 못하게 다툼으로 그리스도를 전파하느니라 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
[빌] 1:18	그러면 무엇이냐 겉치레로 하나 참으로 하나 무슨 방도로 하든지 전파되는 것은 그리스도니 이로써 나는 기뻐하고 또한 기뻐하리라 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

The eyes of faith when fixed on Christ Give hope for what’s ahead, But focus on life’s obstacles And faith gives way to dread. When your outlook is blurred by problems,  focus on Christ.

믿음의 눈이 그리스도께 고정된다면 앞날의 일은 희망적이네 하지만 인생의 장애물에 집중한다면 믿음이 걱정으로 변하고 말 것이라네 문제들로 인해 당신의 시야가 흐려질 때 그리스도에게 집중하라.
