THE LEVEL AND PURPOSE OF JINYOUNG SSANGKUM RYU INTERNATIONAL SEMINARS
Illuminating the Essence of Muye Through One Fundamental Principle
From the Perspective of the International Transmission of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo
-----
Training at a regular dojang may be understood as a process of strengthening the fundamentals and developing the body.
This stage is extremely important. Under the guidance of senior practitioners and instructors, students grow through the constant repetition of fundamental movements while developing their skills and physical abilities. This daily training process deserves full respect in its own right.
An international seminar, however, should not merely repeat what is already being practised at a regular dojang. It must go beyond reviewing familiar techniques and become an advanced educational setting that opens a deeper understanding of the principles and direction of training.
Today, it is not difficult to find people who establish new associations or organizations based on movements and forms memorized and practised at ordinary dojangs. Under the banner of spreading martial arts worldwide, they indiscriminately promote their activities through social media.
In the United States, South America, Europe, and many other regions, we can also observe the commercialization of martial arts through the excessive issuance of fourth-Dan and higher instructor certifications without sufficient training or proper evaluation. Titles, privileges, and various benefits are sometimes offered as a strategy to attract followers and build factions.
In today’s world, where information is shared rapidly, such realities are revealed more easily than ever before.
Therefore, an international seminar must not become merely an event for demonstrating new techniques or awarding ranks and qualifications.
It should present practitioners with fundamental questions and guide them toward discovering the answers for themselves.
○ Why do we undertake this training?
○ What principles are hidden within the movements of the body?
○ How do movement and the flow of energy transform the practitioner’s life?
○ How are technique, philosophy, and healing connected as one?
○ What is the ultimate purpose of martial arts training?
An international seminar is a place where these questions are clearly presented and where practitioners are guided to experience, realize, and progress toward the ultimate goal of Muye.
The Core Purpose of an International Seminar
Above all, an international seminar should focus on education that opens a deeper understanding of the fundamentals.
It should enable practitioners to see the fundamentals anew and reveal the true meaning of movement through the flow that exists within it. This is KiMu Movement.
Therefore, an international seminar is not merely a place for transmitting new techniques. It is a process of conveying the principles that create movement, the direction of training, and the way in which martial practice is connected to human life.
At a regular dojang, technical development and physical conditioning continue through familiar training programs. This is an important stage in learning bodily movement and accumulating a strong foundation.
An international seminar must take practitioners one step further upon that accumulated foundation. It should guide them to discover the principles hidden within bodily movement and to extend that flow into their consciousness and daily lives.
The Five Flows of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Training
The training of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo can be explained through the following five flows:
1. KiMu Breathing
2. KiMu Movement
3. KiMu Meditation
4. KiMu Body — KiMu-Che
5. KiMu Healing — Medicine
These five areas are not separate or independent disciplines.
Breathing opens movement, and movement leads into meditation. Meditation brings transformation to the body and consciousness, and that transformation expands into KiMu-Che and healing.
A Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu international seminar explains martial arts training comprehensively through these five perspectives.
On this foundation, practitioners are guided to accumulate direct experience and move toward the final destination of training.
Today, wherever we go in the world, we can find highly skilled instructors as well as an abundance of excellent techniques and information.
A Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu international seminar does not simply seek to demonstrate more techniques. Through one fundamental principle that is connected to the order of the world, it seeks to illuminate the essence of Muye and present the direction in which training should proceed.
Five Things We Learn at an International Seminar
1. A place to learn how to follow the energy in daily life
Beyond martial arts practice, participants learn how to recognize and follow the flow of nature and energy in everyday life.
2. A place to experience philosophy and healing together
Participants understand the philosophical meaning contained within sword training and directly experience the principles of healing through the flow of energy.
3. A place to understand the true essence and joy of martial arts training
Beyond the simple practice of techniques, participants embody the deeper meaning of Muye and discover the genuine joy of training.
4. A place to discover the true beauty of human life
Through harmony between body and mind, participants reflect upon their lives and discover balance and beauty within them.
5. A place to learn how to approach the ultimate goal
Through Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu training, in which technique, philosophy, and healing are united as one, practitioners learn the path toward the ultimate goal of human cultivation.
Follow the Energy
The central theme of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu international seminars is Follow the Energy.
This expresses the essential spirit of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo.
The flow of energy is not limited to sword techniques. It extends from technique to philosophy and from philosophy to healing, connecting deeply with the whole of human life.
○ Through technique, practitioners directly experience the flow of energy within and around the body.
○ Through philosophy, they realize that the flow of energy is a fundamental principle underlying harmony and balance.
○ Through healing, they experience the release of obstructed flow and the restoration of the body and mind to their natural balance.
However, the ultimate purpose of healing is not simply to treat physical illness or pain.
The true purpose of healing practice is to transform one’s consciousness, correct one’s way of thinking and attitude toward life, and ultimately achieve spiritual growth. The recovery of body and mind is a natural result that follows when one walks the right path.
Why Muye Rather Than Merely Musul?
To understand why our ancestors used the word Muye rather than limiting martial practice to Musul, which primarily refers to martial techniques, we must view it from the structural perspective of Samwon Philosophy, the Philosophy of the Three Origins.
Muye does not consist of technique alone.
Technique, philosophy, and healing are interconnected.
Together, they form a comprehensive system of human education that develops the body, mind, and consciousness.
○ If one learns technique alone,
martial practice may remain merely a method of fighting.
○ When philosophy is added,
one comes to understand where, why, and for what purpose those techniques should be used.
○ When healing is added,
one learns to care for one’s own life and the lives of others and to live in harmony with the order of nature.
A Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo international seminar is precisely a place where these three dimensions are united as one.
We learn the sword without remaining confined to the sword.
We feel energy without becoming attached to energy.
We learn healing without turning it into a treatment technique or a commercial means.
Ultimately, the purpose is to guide practitioners to govern their bodies and minds properly, follow the flow of nature, and grow into more mature human beings.
This is the level and purpose toward which Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu international seminars aspire.
