[제48차 유네스코 세계유산위원회]

  부산에서 열리고 있는 세계 최대 문화유산 회의, 알고 계셨나요? 지금 대한민국 부산에서는 인류의 문화와 자연유산의 미래를 결정하는 매우 중요한 국제회의가 열리고 있습니다. 바로 제48차 유네스코 세계유산위원회(48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee)입니다.

  이번 회의는 2026년 7월 19일부터 29일까지 부산 벡스코(BEXCO)에서 개최되고 있으며, 대한민국이 처음으로 유치한 세계유산위원회입니다. 세계 각국의 정부 대표와 문화유산 전문가들이 한자리에 모여 인류의 소중한 문화유산과 자연유산을 보호하고 미래 세대에 전하기 위한 다양한 방안을 함께 논의하고 있습니다.

1. 세계유산위원회에서는 어떤 일을 할까요?

  많은 사람들이 세계유산위원회를 '새로운 세계유산을 선정하는 회의' 정도로 생각합니다. 하지만 실제 역할은 훨씬 더 중요합니다. 위원회에서는

  - 새로운 세계유산의 등재 여부를 심사하고,

  - 기존 세계유산의 보존 상태를 점검하며,

  - 전쟁, 기후변화, 무분별한 개발 등으로 위협받는 유산을 보호하는 방안을 논의하고,

  - 국제사회가 함께 협력하여 인류 공동의 유산을 지켜 나갈 방법을 결정합니다.

  세계유산은 어느 한 나라만의 자산이 아니라 인류 모두가 함께 보존해야 할 소중한 유산입니다.

2. 반가운 소식, 한국의 갯벌 확대 등재

  이번 부산 회의에서는 우리나라에도 기쁜 소식이 있었습니다. 2021년 세계유산으로 등재된 「한국의 갯벌(Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats)」이 확대 등재되어 여수·고흥·무안·서산 갯벌이 새롭게 포함되었습니다. 이를 통해 한국의 갯벌은 더욱 뛰어난 생태적 가치를 인정받았으며, 동아시아 철새 이동경로를 지키는 중요한 자연유산으로 국제적인 평가를 받게 되었습니다.

3. 문화유산은 우리의 과거이자 미래입니다

  문화유산은 단순히 오래된 건축물이나 관광지가 아닙니다. 그 안에는 한 민족의 역사와 삶, 지혜와 정신이 담겨 있습니다. 빠르게 변화하는 시대를 살아가고 있지만, 인류의 소중한 유산을 보존하려는 노력은 앞으로도 계속되어야 할 것입니다.

The 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee Busan 2026

  Did You Know the World's Most Important World Heritage Meeting Is Taking Place in Busan? An important international conference shaping the future of humanity's cultural and natural heritage is currently being held in Busan, Republic of Korea.

It is the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee, taking place at BEXCO (Busan Exhibition and Convention Center) from July 19 to 29, 2026.

  This is the first time that the Republic of Korea has hosted the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Government representatives, heritage professionals, and experts from around the world have gathered to discuss how humanity's precious cultural and natural heritage can be protected and passed on to future generations.

1. What Does the World Heritage Committee Do?

  Many people believe that the Committee simply selects new World Heritage Sites. In fact, its responsibilities are much broader.

The Committee:

  - Eval‎uates nominations for new World Heritage Sites.

  - Reviews the conservation status of existing World Heritage properties.

  - Develops strategies to protect heritage threatened by war, climate change, and unsustainable development.

  - Promotes international cooperation to safeguard humanity's shared heritage.

  World Heritage belongs not to one nation, but to all humanity.

2. Good News from Korea

  This year's meeting also brought encouraging news for Korea. Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats, originally inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021, has been expanded to include the tidal flats of Yeosu, Goheung, Muan, and Seosan. This expansion further recognizes the outstanding ecological value of Korea's tidal flats and highlights their vital role along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, one of the world's most important migratory bird routes.

3. Our Heritage Connects the Past and the Future

  World Heritage is far more than historic buildings or popular tourist destinations. Every heritage site reflects the history, culture, wisdom, and spirit of the people who created and preserved it. Natural heritage reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect the beauty of our planet and preserve it for generations to come.

  Although we live in a rapidly changing world, our commitment to protecting humanity's priceless heritage must continue.
