제44용 養體(양체)......몸을 살펴 봉양함......第51事

 Application 44 :

 Nurturing the body(Yang-che)... Attending to and caring for the parents′ physical body... Chapter 52.

 養體(양체)는 부모님의 몸을 살펴서 받드는 것이다.

  Yang-che(養體,양체) means to carefully look after and attend to the physical body

   and health of one′s parents.

 부모님의 몸이 건강하다 하더라도 오히려 봉양을 하여야 하는데 하물며

 고질병이나 중병이 있음에야 말한 나위가 없는 것이다.

  Even when parents are in  good health, a child must still provide them with proper

  care and support, how much more so, then, does this go without saying 

   when they suffer from a chronic illness or a severe disease?

  고질병이 있으면 완전한 몸이 되어 편안하시도록 해야 하며,
  중병도 남김없이 치료해 드린 후에 가히 인간의 자식으로서 해야 할 효도를 다하는 것이다.

   If they have a chronic ailment,

   the child must ensure they recover fully and remain somfortable.

   Only after seeking complete treatment for their severe illnesses can a chlid truly

   be said to have fulfilled their bounden duty of filial piety as a human being.

    ※ Nurturing the body(양체) : 부모의 육체적 건강과 의식주를 돌보는 유교적 개념으로,

                                                     영어권에서 이래 하기 쉽도록 직관적으로 번역했습니다.

         Chronic illness/ Severe disease(고질병 / 중병) : 오래된 병은'chronic illness',

                 위중한 병은 'severe disease' 로 구분하여 의미를 명확히 했습니다.

          Go without saying / How much more so(말할 나위가 없다/ 하물며) :

                  당연히 그러해야 함을 강조하는 고전적 어조를 영어식 수사 의문문과 숙어로 표현했습니다.

    ■ 養體者는 養父母之體也라 父母肢體가 在健康이라도

       (양체자는  양부모지체야라  부모지체가   재건강이라도)

         "One who nurtures the body(養體,양체) is one who cares for the physical body of their parents.

           Even when the parents′ bodies and limbs are in good health,"  

    ■ 猶適宜奉養이 況或有殘疾하며 (유적의봉양이 황혹유잔질하며)

        "it is still proper and fitting to serve and provide for them.

          How much more so, then, if they happen to suffer from a chronic ailment,"

    ■ 或有重疴乎아 使殘疾로 (혹유중아호아 사잔질로)

       "or if they are afflicted with a severe illness?

        Therefore, one must cause their chronic ailments"

    ■ 安如完體하며 重疴로 (안여완체하며 중아로)

        "to be put at ease so that their bodies become whole and sound again,

          and their severe illnesses"

    ■ 無遺術然後에 可盡人子之孝矣니라. (무유술연후에 가진인자지효의니라.)

       "to be treated without leaving any medical means untried.

         Only after doing so can a child truly filial piety as a human being."

        ※ 肢體(지체) : 단순히 몸뿐만 아니라 '팔다리와 몸 전체'를 뜻하므로

                               "bodies and limbs"로 세심한 번역을했습니다.

             殘疾(잔질)/ 重痾(중아) : 고질병을 뜻하는 殘疾(잔질)은 "chronic ailment",

                             위중한 병을 뜻하는 옛 표현인 重痾(중아)는 " severe illness" 로

                              매끄럽게 대응시켰습니다.

             無遺術(무술유) : '남겨둔 의술(방책)이 없게 하다' 즉 부모님의 치료를 위래 온갖 방법을

                              아끼지 않고 다 동원한다는 뜻입니다. 

                              이를 "without leaving any medical means untried" 로 의미를 명확히 살렸습니다.
