7. Di Shui Shi( The Army / The Troops).
▣ Nine in the second line is in the midst of the army―good fortune and no blame.
The King bestowss commands(rewards) upon him three times.
[Explanation]
Nine in the second line[九二,구이] refers to a general commanding the Three Armies positioned
in the Central Army(中軍,중군).
There will be good fortune and no fault, and the king will bestow commands / rewards
upon him three times.
[Commrntary]
Five Yin(陰,음) lines are placing all their hopes on the general of Nine in the second line[九二,구이].
Physically, he is a young man in his 20s, but in terms of experience,
he is a seasoned general who has gone through all kinds of trials.
He is undoubtedly a recognized general capable of bringing victory on the battlefield.
In Zuo Zhuan(좌전), it is said that the Upper Army and Lower Atmy,
which are flanking forces, assist the Central Army(中軍,중군).
The Central Army(中軍,중군) refers to the general-in-chief stationed at the front lines
alongside his soldiers.
Nine in the second line[九二,구이] is the main line of the Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘 - Army),
bringing good fortune and being a person free of fault.
Here, the 'King' refers to Qian(乾,건 - Heaven).
The first Yang line of Qian bestows the title of Feudal Lord(諸侯,제후);
the second line(坎,감 -Kan) grants chariots and horses so that achievements can be made;
and the third line(艮,간 - Gen) grants towns and territory.
Heaven gives everything it possesses to the Earth without holding back,
which signifies receiving the supreme favor of Heaven.
This applies when the Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘) turns into the Chongji-kun Hexagram
Hexagram 8).
Dongpa kindly explains the relationship between the general at line 2 and the sovereign at line 5.
Generally, before dispatching troop, if a general fails to win the lord's complete support,
trouble will follow even if there are achievements on the battlefield.
However, because General Line 2 perfectly corresponds with Sovereign Line 5.
there is good fortune(吉,길) and no blame(无咎,무구).
Asan interprets '在師中吉(재사중길 - In the midst of the army, good fortune)' as the proper
attitude of a general who never strays from the middle path on the battlefield.
Furthermore, in '王三錫命(왕삼석명 - The King bestows commands three times)',
'three(三,삼)' is interpreted as meaning 'Multiple times".
It suggests that the general should report frtquently to the king to receive direstives regularly.
Because a general exercising real power on behalf of the king must adhere closely to royal
orders to avoid suspicion, '王三錫命(왕삼석명 - bestowing commands multiple times)'
serves as a key condition for achieving 无咎(무구, no blame).
Confucius's commentary states as follows :
"On thebattlefield, that a general remains steadfast without losing focus
in the Central Armt (中軍,중군) and attains good fortune (吉,길) means that he receives
and carries forward the favor of Heaven
That the king bestows commands three times upon the general on the battlefield signifies
showing care and embrecing the whole nation
As a reference, under 師之坤(사지곤 - The Army moving toward Devotion /Earth),
if it represents an experienced expert,
However, if it represents a novice lacking leadership, drive, and experience, failure will follow.
It undergoes about three rounds of twists and turns.
