For Me

On 9th July, 2018, Vitamin House, the healthcare product industry company, announced that one of the phrases(->bigges bbuzz word) of 2018 would be “For me.” The phrase refers to “people who spend time and money on themselves.” It is an abbreviation of “For health,” “One,” “Recreation,” “More convenient,” and “Expensive.” The most notable part of “For me” is that the concept is derived from being self-content, namely self-reward. The main reason why adherents of this practice are gowing in numbers(->increasing) so fast is that they consider (the act of) buying the product or service to be a means of expressing their identity. So, they are very active in terms of decorating themselves(and) they do not worry about spending too much money on something. Thus, this particular trait has led them to be the leading target of various markets, including IT, camping, Kidult, and so on.
“Sodastream Power” offers a good example(here 생략). The “Sodastream Power” is a home-made soda machine with which you can make your own soda by controlling the carbonic acid intensity(density). The machine is the main product of the company, and it can make 60 L of soda per cylinder. This product has been popular with(->to)the “For me” generation due to its electrical system, which can match the concertation of brand soda with its own soda . In such ways, the ability to combine one’s preferences in a product is growing faster than ever before.
Additionally, “For me” offers huge benefits to mobile commerce as well. For instance, (take a look at) the “Almond Breeze” KakaoTalk gift service (which) exhibits the high percentage of purchasers giving the beverage to themselves rather than to someone else. The “Almond Breeze” company responded that giving it as a gift is popular among those in their 20s and 30s, and that “Almond Breeze has settled as the new health product of choice along with diet and home training.”
In particular, the concept of “For me” is most interested(->polular) in “appearance.” Home-shopping companies such as CJ O Shopping, Lotte and Hyundai Homeshopping have stated that fashion and beauty products ranked number one among their customer services. Despite the widespread idea that only women like to improve their appearance, men have also started to take care of their appearance. The Four Seasons Hotel in Korea has recently introduced the men-only hairdresser “HERR,” which provides a personalized hairstyle suited to the guest’s facial and body lines. Guests can also drink whisky and cocktails while being shaved in the traditional English way. Although the price is two to three times higher than most other hairdressers, many customers re-visit the HERR, which is why the use of this hairdresser has witnessed an increase of (+the use of service) more than 60 percent every month.
Not only hairdressers, but also the availability of men-only skincare products and services are increasing. The Sheraton Seoul D Cube Hotel has launched the “For Men Spa Treatment” promotion, which offers a massage service popular among men. Further(->and) the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel (+offers a smiliar service) “Spa Grand Hyatt Seoul”. In 2008, which was the year in which the service was launched, only 35% of men reported using such a service, but in 2016, it was found that approximately 50% of men enjoyed the service.
Spending money as a means of revealing one’s identity has been the leading trend in recent years, in addition to spending money in order to show others what you have. Gmarket conducted a survey of 946 customers between 31st May and 6th July by asking: “Did you have ever spend money just for you?” Some(->and) 93 percent of respondents answered (with) “Yes.”
Additionally, in terms of the “Reasons why spending money on oneself is important,” the answer “For self-reward” ranked number one, accounting for 36 percent of answers, while “The minimum spending for everyday living such as clothes and daily necessity” ranked number two, with 33 percent. The answers “Because you only live once” (22 percent) and “‘Growing up through self-development” (7%) followed. Surprisingly, this spending trend was also clearly seen in those in their 40s and 50s. With regard to the “For whom do you usually spend your money” questions, the answers were “For myself” (43 percent), “For my kids” (37 percent), and “For my parents” (five->5 percent). The respondents had devoted their money to their kids and their parents in the past, but now they are focusing on themselves.
Spending money on oneself is no longer a trait associated with a particular age group, but is rather a phenomenon that is widespread among all ages. So, with that in mind, the companies must provide products implying this inclunation(->with that in mind, the companies must provide products implying this inclination), and those who are selling such products should understand their customers’ new niche and enhance their own products to match it.
