■ Standards for International Seminars and the Path of the Instructor
United World Haedong Kumdo Federation
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo
Online, we occasionally see international seminars being organized under the name of an organization by individuals who do not yet possess sufficient training experience or teaching ability. Such events may also be used as a means of pursuing personal benefit or expanding an organization.
Similar situations occur frequently in human society.
However, when they are repeated within the martial arts community, they can create confusion about the essential nature and ultimate purpose of martial arts training. They may also make it difficult for students and the public to judge properly the roles of organizations and instructors. Ultimately, they can undermine trust in both the martial art and its leadership.
In particular, the loss of time and the psychological harm that students may unknowingly experience after choosing an unsuitable instructor or organization cannot easily be repaired or compensated for later.
Students must therefore carefully seek an instructor who can guide their training in the right direction.
If someone is regarded as an instructor to be followed for life simply because:
- the organization is large;
- it has a long history; or
- personal relationships have been established through various events,
it may become very difficult to reach the ultimate goal of martial arts training.
From the perspective of the international transmission of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo, I would therefore like to examine the standards for international seminars and the qualifications required of their instructors.
1. The Essential Purpose of an International Seminar
An international seminar should not be understood merely as technical instruction or as an event intended for commercial purposes or dojang management.
Its purposes should be clearly defined and reflected in the actual teaching content:
- Reestablishing the fundamentals
- Presenting the proper direction of training
- Integrating technique, philosophy, and healing
- Experiencing and repeatedly practicing Energy Flow
Energy Flow refers to the natural flow of energy that emerges without being forced when breathing, movement, and consciousness become connected as one during training. Practitioners must experience this flow directly and repeat the process until it is gradually embodied.
Rather than being an occasion to display many new techniques, an international seminar should be an educational setting where practitioners deepen their understanding of the meaning and principles contained within the fundamental movements they have already learned.
Unlike regular dojang training, an international seminar cannot normally be repeated several times every week. Repetitive practice and the cultivation of body and mind must therefore continue in each practitioner’s own dojang. The international seminar should deepen their understanding of the fundamental principles and direction of martial arts training, thereby strengthening the foundation they have already established.
It is the instructor’s responsibility—and one of the important purposes of an international seminar—to help practitioners connect the principles of movement with their own training experience and apply those principles through continued reflection in everyday life.
2. Minimum Qualifications for an International Seminar Instructor
A long training history or a high Dan rank does not automatically provide sufficient qualification to lead an international seminar.
An international seminar instructor should possess the following abilities in a balanced and comprehensive manner:
- The ability to explain fundamental movements from the perspectives of body structure and the principles of movement.
- The ability to go beyond teaching outward form and help practitioners understand the purpose and underlying principles of each movement.
- The ability to teach technique and philosophy as interconnected aspects of one system of training rather than as separate subjects.
- The ability to present a healing perspective concerned with the flow of life and natural recovery. At the same time, the instructor must clearly explain its scope and limitations so that it is not misunderstood as a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.
- The ability to explain Energy Flow on the basis of personal training experience and to guide practitioners safely so that they can experience and explore it for themselves.
- The responsibility not to present personal experiences or traditional training concepts as universal or scientifically established facts that apply equally to everyone.
A seminar independently organized by an instructor who has not been verified as meeting these standards cannot be recognized as an official international seminar of this Federation.
3. The Transmission Philosophy of JSKR-HK
The Federation’s international seminars are continually held in various regions of the world, and fundamental training always remains at the center of their educational content.
As a new direction for martial arts education in the 21st century, Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu teaches technique, philosophy, and healing as one integrated system of transmission.
These are not three separate fields.
Technique is the process of embodying principles through the body.
Philosophy is the process of connecting those principles with the direction of one’s life.
Healing is the process of understanding the flow of life and natural recovery.
This is the mission of transmission carried by Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
The fundamentals are not a low level required only by beginners. They are the starting point to which practitioners must repeatedly return as their training deepens, and they are the essential foundation for understanding a wide range of techniques and principles.
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo, instructors holding the rank of 5th Dan or above wear a white uniform.
White is not an objective certification of higher status or the completion of training.
It signifies that the instructor’s path begins again from the fundamentals. It is a symbol of the commitment to remain humble before learning while accepting greater responsibility.
In contrast, the green uniform of a 1st Dan practitioner represents new life and the beginning of growth.
The color of the uniform is therefore not merely an indication of rank. Within the training system of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, it symbolically represents the meaning of each stage of training and the responsibilities associated with the instructor’s role.
4. Recommendations for Practitioners and Organizations
Today, anyone can promote their activities nationally and internationally through advertising and social media.
However, the scale of promotion is not the same as an instructor’s educational ability.
Before choosing an instructor or seminar, it is necessary, as far as reasonably possible, to examine what is being taught, the philosophy underlying the teaching, and the lineage and educational process through which that teaching was developed.
Before attending a seminar or selecting an instructor, practitioners are advised to consider the following:
- Identify the instructor’s martial arts philosophy and educational objectives.
- Determine whether the instructor merely demonstrates techniques or also explains their underlying principles and practical application.
- Examine what the instructor means by Energy Flow and whether it is explained within the proper boundaries of personal training experience and traditional concepts.
- Examine the standards and educational and evaluation procedures through which ranks and official positions were awarded.
- Confirm whether the instructor clearly understands responsibility for safety and the scope and limitations of healing practice.
Choosing an instructor concerns not only the practitioner’s time and effort but also the future direction of training and the values by which the practitioner may come to live.
It is not especially difficult to verify whether an instructor qualification or a rank of 4th or 5th Dan and above in a particular martial art was awarded through a legitimate educational and evaluation process.
A decision should not be based solely on advertisements or titles. The teaching content, philosophy, qualification standards, and verification procedures must all be examined together.
Conclusion — The Mission of Transmission
An international seminar is not primarily a place for gaining prestige. It is a place for accepting responsibility for education and transmission.
It should not be an event organized merely for personal benefit. It must be an educational setting through which martial arts technique, philosophy, and training culture are properly transmitted to the next generation.
An instructor entrusted to teach on the Federation’s international platform must be able to:
- help practitioners understand the fundamentals anew;
- guide them toward recognizing the principles and flow of movement;
- explain the relationship between technique, philosophy, and healing; and
- lead them to reflect upon the meaning of life contained within the training.
Learn the sword,
but go beyond the technical boundaries of swordsmanship
and reflect upon your own life and attitude.
Feel energy,
but do not declare personal experience
to be a universal fact that applies to everyone.
Learn healing,
but do not confuse it with medical treatment
or exaggerate it as a commercial means of treating others.
This is the path of the instructor pursued by Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo.
The United World Haedong Kumdo Federation will apply these standards to the authorization of official international seminars and the education of instructors. It will continue to protect and develop a proper system of transmission and a responsible teaching philosophy.

United World Haedong Kumdo Federation
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo
- su organización es grande;
- ayudar a comprender nuevamente los fundamentos;
- guiar hacia la comprensión de los principios y del flujo del movimiento;

United World Haedong Kumdo Federation
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo
○ Energy Flow
○ Energy Flow
